Resident Evil 7: Biohazard’s free PS4 to PS5 upgrade is not available with the PS Plus Collection. We actually spotted this last night when we went to redeem, but the story has since been doing the rounds on sites like IGN. This isn’t the first time we’ve experienced a situation like this: initially, the PS Plus version of Final Fantasy VII Remake wouldn’t upgrade from PS4 to PS5 – until Square Enix later had a change of heart.
To be honest, it’s unclear where to pinpoint blame here. There are examples of PS Plus freebies upgrading, so this is potentially on Capcom. However, the Japanese publisher could perhaps argue that it was only paid by Sony to include the PS4 version of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in the PS Plus Collection, and seeing as it’s invested additional effort into the port – well, it’s understandable that it wants to get paid.
Personally, we’d like to see the platform holder enforce some more consistent guidelines in this area moving forwards, because it does get a bit messy when some games upgrade and others don’t. From the consumer’s perspective, if they “own” Resident Evil 7: Biohazard through the PS Plus Collection, then there’s no real reason why it shouldn’t upgrade like any other copy.

Well, if you expected a "free" copy to upgrade for free. Then you don't live in the real world.
They do need to make money afterall.
Removed - inappropriate language
I have a friend who was trying to upgrade yesterday. It keeps saying he has to pay around £15.99 I think.
Not good Capaom.
Always slightly begrudged paying for it a few weeks before it arrived on PS+. Vindicated! lol. But still haven't played it
This is disapointing.
@SolaceCreed it's not free though, it's part of a £50 a year subscription service!
@R1spam context matters: "free" in this case means "at no additional cost".
Fair enough. It is called "the PS4 collection" after all. Would have been a nice bonus but not a big deal.
@Ooccoo_Jr It's actually called the "PS Plus Collection" - sure, there's only PS4 games in it but it's not in the name
Not getting the free upgrade is a bummer, but luckily the PS4 version is permanently $20. Bought that and the upgrade worked fine.
@R1spam
They're free copies of the game bolted on to the price. You didn't actuay pay for that game, you paid of online access and the rest of it.
So, yes it is a "free" copy.
So I own physical copy of RE 7, but must of added the 'free PsPlus one at some point as I cannot upgrade! Is there anyway to remove the psplus one from my Library?
Here my deleted comment (#2) in appropriate language:
Make love to yourself, Capcom.
This may sound harsh but its unrealistic and unfair to expect a "free" version to upgrade for free. Would it have been neat? Yeah of course but end of the day you never owned it anyway and Capcom are rewarding people who owned it.
@Voltan Fair enough, I stand corrected (serves me right for not googling to check). The intention was that it was full of PS4 games though so I had no expectation that free upgrades would be a given. What I do find annoying with the collection is when you have a situation with something like Persona 5 or FFXV but you can't pay an upgrade fee for the Royal editions (I don't think you can anyway, I haven't checked so please correct me if I am wrong again).
@MewSan886 You'd need to use the disc to upgrade.
@WallyWest We found something we agree on 😂
@SolaceCreed Any game you get through your PS Plus subscription isn't free. I'm not arguing that this upgrade should be free, but don't sheep yourself into saying the games that are offered through PS Plus is free.
@Max_the_German real classy...
People need to realize that just because you got something as part of a subscription service doesn't mean you are entitled to a free upgrade.
This is a business Capcom needs to get paid for their efforts. As the article stated there is a possibility that they were only paid to include the ps4 version as part of plus. If the contract changes, which it can, then maybe the upgrade will be free later. Till then... deal with it.
@SolaceCreed I have disc. PS5 sees disc but doesn't offer upgrade as I added psplus one to my library previously (though never installed).
this is just greedy sony! i can garantee that if rez 7 was on game pass that the game would be the upgraded version on game pass.
The inconsistency from Sony is baffling. Even for their own titles they do this. Take Plus Extra, it's got Miles Morales for PS4 and PS5 but the original Spider-man only is in the PS4 version. It's just very disappointing.
IF i buy the upgrade and then unsub from ps plus. do i still own the game without ps plus. or do i have to be subbed to be able to play it??? if its gone when i dont have ps plus. its like buying an upgrade that is not really yours. its really bad. we do not own the games on ps plus. we rent them. they should upgrade the games to the newest versions. we pay every month. should we have to pay for them to upgrade the games we rent??
that’s bull crap . literally the only reason i re-installed the game and i couldn’t find the ps5 version .
I can buy the disc version between £5-£8 on ebay if i wanted it that bad..
All I want is for them to add the third person view to it like they did with Resident Evil Village.
@MewSan886 I'm afraid you're stuck, just like me
@Jeaz Again, it's context that you're missing.
You didn't pay for the game copy do it is "free". As in, this wasn't given to you at additional cost, so Capcom are entitled to charge you if they want since you didn't actually pay for the game copy, you paid for online access.
@torne I know what I‘ve subscribed for when I bought my PS5. This PS Plus Collection includes PS4 games without PS5 updates despite only available for PS5 customers. I just don‘t like that inconsistency. Why differentiate existing customers after a longer period of time in first and second class customers if there is no need to? With such a move, you can create more dissatisfaction than satisfaction while even not generating a decent amount of extra sales of a several years old product, available for low prices on store shelves and on eBay. The result of this is: Many people would be happier if there wouldn’t be this update, and that’s a shame.
@Max_the_German Most of these games are games that didn't upgrade before now, most still don't, Capcom's contract with Sony for this doesn't impact the upgrade decision at all really.
It's different for say FFVII, which was Sony exclusive, so made less sense than a third party developer.
I saw someone on Twitter getting all upset because they can't upgrade their PS4 dics because they have a digital PS5 🙈
I do think Sony still have issues with how their store handles some games as ive seen a few mention they cant get the upgrade because they added the plus version. I've had issues in the past with plus games, for example Fallout 4 plus version doesn't work with my save data but the disc does
Just a heads up for all:
If you have the Gold Edition of RE7 (digital or physical) then you have to SPECIFICALLY search for the Gold Edition of the game on the PS Store to get your upgrade. It's super annoying 😵💫😵💫
@MewSan886 @GoodGame
Guys I found it
It's a pain in the ass but it is there.
Put the disc in and click the three dots next to the 'copy bar' and click "select version".
Then select the "PS4 - GOLD VERSION" when the game page opens theres a pannel to the right that says "Free PS5 upgrade".
That's where it is.
@GoodGame
Yep, looks like only way I can upgrade is to try again with my disc when my ps plus expires, which is sometime in 2024 🤣
@SolaceCreed thanks for checking, but no good. My ps5 thinks I have ps plus version, so no good even though I own physical disc. Can't see where to remove from my ps plus library! Might work when my sub ends in 2024 🤪
@SolaceCreed think you need to re-read what I said regarding Capcom charging you for an upgrade. I’m fine with that. But stop saying the game was free. You’ve paid for PS Plus I assume and thus you’ve paid for the game. Not directly and it is as you say offered at no additional cost. But it’s not free.
@Jeaz You still don't understand context and that's fine. So, let's just leave it there.
@MewSan886 I'd report it to Capcom then, I had PSPlus version too, but it allows me to do it, I'm not currently subscribed though, so might be the difference.
I know as a customer we should always demand more considering how little our doller gets us these days , however if work is put in then it's not unreasonable to want to be paid for it. Also if we keep approaching things with this mindset who's to say devlopers might stop putting in the work to upgrade past gen games if they don't think they are going to get anything out of it.
I expect and we should be getting (excluding indy and small studios) free updates for games we already purchased, we shouldn't be expected to keep buying at full price graphical updates and other minor changes to games.
However I give Capcom a complete pass in this particular case. For RE7 I paid nothing for it so why should I get the PS5 version for nothing as well? Now if I go ahead and buy it for PS4 then yeah let me have that PS5 version.
@SolaceCreed Yes, that is issue, my sub has a way to go and no way to remove from Library.
So if you can't upgrade because you have ps plus version buy digital as physical disc still won't work!
@Max_the_German "Here my deleted comment (#2) in appropriate language: Make love to yourself, Capcom."
Oooooh, talk dirty to me 😉
I owned the game prior to PS+ Collection — I will gladly take the free upgrade, thank you Capcom.
@SolaceCreed and you don’t understand the basics of economy.
It will be because ps5 doesn’t have smart delivery. I remember it was the same with other games on psNow that had free upgrades but only offered the ps4 version. Due to no smart delivery the ps5 versions a completely different download…thankfully we no longer have to download both versions of games now when you do get the ps5 versions. But hopefully they get on this…especially if they’re streaming these games too.
@Jeaz Okay, since you don't want to just leave it be, as I so asked you to.
You realise PSPlus isn't anything to do with the Ecomomy, right?
The context was implied by the airquotation marks, hence, "Free". Once again, you didn't actually pay for the collection, it was given to you by the goodwill of the developer, and they can at anytime, if they so choose, pull it from the service. It's how subscriptions work, I'm afraid, thus making it a "free" copy. Not a free copy. It wasn't given to you as a cost to yourself, so why should they let you upgrade for free. It's entirely up to them.
@MewSan886 Ahhh, fair enough, hope they sort it soon then. Capcom are many things, but they don't normally let problems fester.
@SolaceCreed Goodwill? It’s marketing. Sony is paying the publisher and developer to include the game in the collection to make buying the PS5 more lucrative, especially for newcomers to the PlayStation. Obviously they aren’t paying full price for each copy or anything like that, but there are some form of compensation.
There’s a reason that Sony never uses the word free in their PS Plus marketing, as it would false marketing. They use words like “included”, add to your collection and so on.
@kenshin4ever
That's because you are paying a monthly fee for GamePass.
Personally I don't get why people would believe they would be entitled to an upgrade for a game they don't own.
@banacheck Exactly, yet there are people on here that don't get it.
@SolaceCreed we can agree to disagree, the games I get with plus are why I remain subscribed as I mainly play single player games. They are not freebie add-ons for a reasonable number of folks.
@naruball OK, I take that point. However, when a game comes with plus, it's marketed as that game. There's no branding/disclaimer that says it's a lesser version of the game or different retail sku. So in that context when you add it your library, you own it.
@Jeaz Exactly, so they aren't making any profit on it are they? So, why would they let someone who effectively played it for "free", upgrade for free?
I still don't understand what is tripping you up 🤣. There's effort gone in to making the PS5 version, they're only going to let people who actually paid them for it upgrade. It's how it works.
@R1spam That's a fair enough reason, but as part of the subscription, you technically don't own the game, so Capcom are still entitled to ask you for money towards the upgrade as it took effort to make the PS5 version. I mean it's only £15.99, there's companies that have charged almost three times that amount for rereleases that could easily be classed as an upgrade.
@SolaceCreed your not wrong, take-two would charge you £70 for a remaster!
@SolaceCreed I've never had any problems with them charging for the upgrade. And even if they were compensated by Sony for including the game in the Collection, it's undoubtedly more profitable for them to sell a copy, and it's fine if they chose to offer those customers more value.
Look, the axe I had to grind was rather calling it a free game to start with. But you aren't alone in calling the PS Plus games free, In fact, I find most game news sites (this one included) make the same mistake and call it things like "the free games this month". I'm sorry if I was unclear or anything, was just trying to get facts right.
Ok. I platinumed the one that came with the PS+ Collection. My nerves have reported they are not eager for a replay. Personally, I see both sides but, more than anything, I wish they would be consistent. When Sony originally announced they were going to leave upgrades to the devs/pubs I thought it was a good idea but after all of this it's turned out to be a massive headache
@SolaceCreed er? i got these updates free on steam.
@themightyant Exactly the same situation for me. I'll be digging out my disc copy. Hype!
@MewSan886 cant you remove the license? Is there a way to remove it and then install your disc version? I know you can restore the licenses so maybe there is a way to remove them?
@Northern_munkey Nope, couldn't see how to remove license! Oh well, who needs Ray tracing anyway 😄
@MewSan886
I've had a thought. Reset your licences on the PS5s settings page and see if the free version appears?
@R1spam well said! Playing this encourages players to then buy further RE games so it’s always a pro consumer win
As I've said before if you haven't bought the game then don't complain these are free upgrades for the people that supported the games by buying them that they didn't have to do.
I bought RE7 near launch (it was cheap), then got a digital copy with the VR mega bundle and was slightly peeved to see it on the PS Plus collection when I got a PS5 (because I already owned half the games) but at least now I get the free upgrade! Maybe one of these days I'll get around to actually playing it...
Ah what a bummer. But I expected this. No complaints. I’ve been waiting to try Resident Evil out. Literally the day I was going to play RE7 for the first time, the ps5 upgrades got announced. Hopefully I can pick one of them up for cheap somewhere!
@banacheck i pay a monthly fee for ps plus. the same thing. or one time per year. they should update their games. we are renting their games. we dont really own them. they should have the best version on the site. sony is just greedy.
@SolaceCreed I pay for the game when I pay for Plus. That’s part of what sells Plus, so I paid for it. A bundle doesn’t mean you didn’t pay.
@kenshin4ever sonys being greedy? I think its up to capcom if any of their games get free upgrades and which versions get the free upgrades..it sucks really that sony gave the game away in a package deal but they cant force capcom to give away the update to those of us who didnt buy it..
@Jaz007 you didnt pay for the game at all..what you pay for is online multiplayer and sony chucks in a few "free" games each month as an incentive to keep subscribing..your subscription runs out you can no longer access those games..if you paid for the games you would get the upgrades and still be able to play them..
@Northern_munkey I'm getting a bit tired trying to explain this concept. I don't understand how people don't get it.
I thankfully bought the Gold Edition physically, so I'm all set for the free upgrade.
@SolaceCreed i'm getting a bit tired of people who think they have bought the game when they subscribed to ps+...its a long term rental service..nothing more..buy the games if it upsets you that much that you feel hard done by if a free bare bones version of a game thats included as part of your sub dosnt receive the free upgrade that the people who actually paid for the game (not the subscription service)get...people need to get a grip and stop being so entitled..(edited as i thought you were having a pop at me...its early👍)
@Northern_munkey Exactly.
@SolaceCreed Nice one. Thanks for the info
I can confirm that what SolaceCreed said about it working is correct...
''Guys I found it

Downloading the PS5 upgrade for free right now
I have PS4 gold edition so I will still get the ps5 upgrade anyways, I don't think I redeemed the ps+ version in the collection I'm not sure 🤔🤔
And when did capcom announce this free ps5 upgrade anyways, will it have psvr2 support in the future I wonder?
@GoodGame Glad to be of service.
@huyi Village has PSVR2 capabilities, I haven't seen anything on Biohazard yet, personally.
It you follow the directions I posted for Goodgame. It should allow you to update it.
I have the gold edition PS4 in my disc drive, searched the store and there is no resident evil 7 gold edition PS5 version, I can see the normal version of resident evil 7 PS4/PS5 but I'm unable to access this version, when I select version it only gives me the demo, no option to download anything else, UK here I'm guessing we wait longer than the US which is expected I guess 🙄🙄 but UK there is no option to upgrade and download ps5 version of resident evil 7 gold 😤😤
@SolaceCreed yes I'm aware that resident evil 8 will have psvr2 options but I don't think we will be getting them right now, the psvr2 is not even out yet
Found it, you have to go to PS+ collection and select resident evil 7 there, I didn't claim the standard version but it did detect that I had gold, it's downloading now, hope that helps someone who needs to find it also
You have to pay to have access to Plus Collection, so the game is not free after all.
@huyi Yes, works for me, I did claim standard, but have gold version disc, so popped disc in, changed versions from ps plus collection and it's there to choose ps5. Nice.
@Northern_munkey I paid for Plus before it had online as part of the deal. I could easily just say I paid for monthly games and discounts and they added online in, and it by chronological order it would be correct.
@Jaz007 you can try and argue it any way you want...you are still wrong..
@Northern_munkey Is that you’re reaction to having g your logic proven incorrect? Just say I’m wrong regardless with no reason as to why?
Its really simple..you subscribe to ps+ which gets you access to online multiplayer etc..after a while sony increased the price but started giving away "free" games that you can download and keep providing you keep your sub active..if you cancel it or dont renew it you no longer have access to those "freebies." The games you purchase with real money you keep and can play for as long as you want...so yes you are wrong about owning the freebies..you dont its that simple therefore you are wrong..
@Jaz007 also plus has always had online included..on the ps3 multiplayer was free and then they added the optional upgrade to ps+ at a premium..once the ps4 dropped you only had ps+ as an option so i'm not sure what version of ps+ you were paying for that had no online play function?
@Northern_munkey Plus had nothing to do with it online other than digitally downloaded games. It has nothing to do with Playing online or accessing any online function of the PS3. It was there for monthly games, discounts, and few other things like certain avatars:
Plus did not have online functionality (cloud saves aside, a minimal feature on display) included originally, a base PSN account did. online play and Plus had absolutely nothing to do with each other originally.
@Jaz007 it really dosnt matter anymore...its a moot point..lets just agree to disagree as i have more important things to be doing than going round and round in a circle with you..enjoy your weekend dude..👍
@Northern_munkey Resident evil 7 is in the ps plus collecton. should it not have the best version in there? i think its just strange. its the same with final fantasy vii in the collection too. its not the ps5 version in the ps plus collection.
@banacheck But i pay for ps plus monthly. its exactly like gamepass
@kenshin4ever it would have been nice yes agreed but obviously the devs of those games decided that if you got the game as a bonus via a sub then you have to pay for it..buy the disc version for a fiver off ebay and save a tenner...or dont..i'm kinda over this now 👍
