God of War Ragnarok’s release date was planned to be revealed today, but a change of plans behind-the-scenes means we’ll have to wait. This delay was pre-empted by Sony Santa Monica’s Cory Barlog overnight, when he pleaded with fans for patience. Previously, social media sneakster The Snitch had riddled that an announcement was due on 30th June.
That’s been corroborated by reliable journalists Jason Schreier and Tom Henderson, both of whom have since reported that the announcement has been pushed back. Sony apparently has videos ready to run showcasing the game’s Collector’s Edition, while a PS Blog post was apparently planned to confirm that development is progressing well. No new gameplay was scheduled, however.
According to Henderson, writing for Exputer, the Collector’s Edition will feature a 1:1 replica of Mjolnir’s Hammer as well as some badges and other pieces of paraphernalia. If you’re not interested in those odds-and-ends, an alternative Jotnar Edition will be available, with just the game and the aforementioned hammer.
No release date has been officially announced, but Henderson speculates that 11th November may be the day. He hypothesises that the next Need for Speed is eyeing 4th November, with Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora targeting 18th November. In the interest of release schedule spacing – and with Sony having marketing dibs on Avatar – 11th November may make sense.
Writing on social media, Cory Barlog has insisted that the game has not been delayed out of 2022, and Henderson claims that Sony can pull the trigger on its aforementioned release date and Collector’s Edition reveals whenever it’s ready. The wait goes on, then, but it does very much sound like news is right around the corner – we’re just going to have to sit tight for the time being.

No rush. We know its gonna come eventually. Plenty to be getting on with in the time being. Backlog season will continue either way
In hoping the game doesnt get delayed, we waited for an announcement, that got delayed. Hopefully not a sign of things to come.
Just get it right, if that's 2022 all well and good, but if it's Spring or Summer 2023 no problem either. Plenty to play.
Why are people going so mental for this? I love GoW but I'm cool with hearing about it when they're ready to talk and I'm ready to play it when they're done.
Maybe they moved it a day to make the Snitch wrong.
This game can’t get delay because Sony has unannounced games that releasing in 2023.
If its delayed then it's no big deal, there's already soo much for me to play on my ps5 and switch over the next 5 months, probably too much
I am sure the delay on the release date has to do with the constant drama surrounding us: US Supreme Court decision & January 6 hearings. PS in the past delayed a State of Play cause of the news from the outside world. I would suspect they will move the announcement to next week
I don't get why people can't just be patient and wait for them to reveal this game. Cory Barlog isn't even the Director of the game and he has to come out and tell people to chill out.
Just let Eric Williams and his team take their time and make the game as perfect as we all hope it should be. Also let Cory relax and work on whatever he's working on.
It will be worth the wait.
I'm kinda hoping it gets delayed to 2023 so I can enjoy everyone crying over it... 🤭😘 ❤️
Sony’s silence sucks but it is what it is.
Very bizarre move and regardless of the fanhumans that cannot think objectively, this delay had a reason and it was likely due to development or corporate greed related issues. Either one is not good.
It'll show up when it shows up.
You think they did it just spite The Snitch's flawlss record?
@KundaliniRising333 There's always a negative isn't there? Maybe Sony wanted to drop the news on a quieter week or want a new trailer to go along with it. That's just as viable as your suggestions.
@ThorsHammer @BearsEatBeets A big company like Sony isn't going to care one bit about a random Twitter account.
Cory Barlog? More like Cory 'just get on with your' Backlog!
I like the theory that they uploaded the video to YouTube with a fake date to confirm the snitch has access to YouTube in order to raise a ticket for someone accessing their data without permission.
So...what are they waiting for?
Oh NICE, the collector's doesn't have a Kratos statue and has the hammer? That's awesome, now I don't need it xD
But yeah it would be weird to reveal it without gameplay. Stupid, even...
Surely SONY haven't done this today just because they don't like that new leaker being right again?!?! I think having a leaker who knows everything on Twitter is an AMAZING tool for SONY to use to hype up their games. Considering SONY seem to quiet for to long lately. Saying that I am in no rush for games to come out because(STILL!!!) I have a big PS5 back-log to get thru(Hmm, back to the BRILLIANT KENA now)
I find it kinda insane the amount of people on twitter who are getting really aggressive towards the devs all over wanting a release date on a game.
Oh we r going with date announcement ‘delay’ now because insiders say so?
What a news really.
Yes this is a constructive comment. Maybe just stop with insider ‘news’ when they get proven wrong whatever the reason they give to justify it. In any case that should only be a rumour of little importance. (No matter the importance insiders want to give themselves).
@LiamCroft Yeah, I was only messing around. Whilst I don't doubt there are some in the company that don't like stuff leaking they're not going to change plans because of it.
Everyone was just assuming today from the 30 anyway.
So the delay was delayed then? 😂😂
My guess is that Sony saw all the leakers and delayed the reveal out of spite.
Well if it does release this year or not.
Sony have done better than most others when it comes to releasing in house studio AAA games this year 2022 already.
When god of war is ready it will come.i got a lot of games to play.my backlog of games is huge.word up son
Tbh I don’t think they need to worry about clashing with Need for Speed’s release date
At this point, they should focus on improving the game for PS5 and stop pouring resources on the last-gen version.
I wonder if this is Sony trying to find the internal leakers. Every time they set a new reveal date internally, whether real or not, is an opportunity to catch the person leaking information. Each time they delay the reveal they could bring one or two more people into the “circle of truth” so only a select group of people are in on scheme.
I have to wonder if the more folks harass and threat the development team on social media, if they continue to push it back due to the overall rudeness of it all.
@AdamNovice
There’s no doubt a rumoured ‘delay’ of a rumoured ‘announcement’ is going to be overblown and negatively looked at as another of a dozen imaginary delays. Gaming ‘news’ these days I can’t 🙄
Jesus Christ. Reading Cory's tweets.. What is actually wrong with people. Actually harrasing the team in some very disturbing ways. How desperate can people seriously be for a release date. Game will release when its ready. Date or no date. It's not gonna make the game arrive earlier.
Late 2023 absolute disgrace stop showing games off to early this was originally 2021! I expect to see massive improvements from the original not just more of the same. PlayStation fans can't talk about xbox delays
@themightyant what you on about? Elden ring aside this is the worst years I can remember in gaming
Why you all saying delays are no big deal? Yes they are! Don't announce game 3 years before release! You all slate Microsoft for delays but because its Sony its OK?
I wonder if it was pushed because it was leaked?
I still think it's to do with Nintendo and how unpredictable they are. Don't forget that they had a Partner Showcase the day after the Playstation Showcase in September 2020 announcing Switch exclusive Monster Hunter.
@Ryany I get it, 2022 was meant to be one of the greatest years in gaming, but due to covid almost everything has been pushed and it's a little thin. If you genuinely have nothing to play, that sucks. But most of us have backlogs longer than the great wall of china. They could release no new games in 2022 & 2023 and i'd still not manage to play half of the games I already own, or want to play.
@UltimateOtaku91 Maybe we should all just identify as somebody with 6 pairs of hands and 4 attention spans 😋
@Kidfunkadelic83 ...or the news that it's on time has been delayed. 😋
@Ryany We know Sony will keep polishing till release. Also it will give Sony yet another game to shout about in 2023 if they did.
Delay it all they want just as long as it means its great on release.
Am I the only one struggling to stay afloat a massive backlog of quality games? This just means I can clear more of my backlog. I've barely had a break yet from my adventures in the Forbidden West and The Lands Between.
If the announcement is delayed because the game is delayed...okay, cool. Finish and polish the game.
I'm enjoying H:FW a lot more now than I did on release day, with fewer bugs (most of the rumor-givers in the game wouldn't talk to me until one or two patches ago), better graphics. That level of polish SHOULD have happened before release. I still had plenty of fun with it, but some significant frustration as well.
If there's a chance GoW will have similar issues, take the time for the polish. It's worth it.
@Ryany I mean most people were happy Starfield was delayed because it means more polish and fewer bugs then normal for Bethesda. That said Sony tends to get away with because they have good years regardless, this year alone will see at least 4 big PS console exclusives games while Xbox has nothing this year other then timed deals.
@RobN Horizon was a mess at launch and performance mode was broken as hell, i'm amazed reviews and Digital Foundry didn't call them out. Plays like a dream now and looks incredible but it shouldn't have taking months for that to happen
@WallyWest lol "broken" and a "mess" is what you use to describe Cyberpunk or Fallout 76, not Horizon. It had a couple of issues but it was perfectly playable, no game releases 100% bug free, especially an open world game.
I wonder if the game is ready (or will be ready to release this year) but Sony want to hold it back because of the PS5 shortages?
Not really fussed either way. If it arrives this year, great - if not, it’s no big deal 🤷♂️
@AdamNovice
HFW was not a broken mess it played well for me.
But I’m still playing taking my time and yes it is far better for the updates for sure.
@Dezzy70 Exactly, it's been improved but like I say it was perfectly playable at launch.
Please don't rush this game. We don't need/want another Cyberpunk launch disaster.
When the devs say they can't talk about it, it really does feel like it isn't ready to show which doesn't bode well. All that is needed is some transparency from Santa Monica. So some people can move on and let this game release when it's ready.
Waiting for war to end like Nintendo 🤔
@The_Pixel_King You're not the hero we deserve but you're the hero we need right now
Wonder if they're doing this so they can try to find/bait the leaker. Either that or they want to pair the announcement with some other news, like a major acquisition. I can especially see the latter if the game is being delayed so they can have some good news with the bad.
Just announce the delay of the game so I don’t have to read any more articles like this one.
Damn, guess my penis photo didn’t work.
I'm not even a super huge GoW 2018 fan and I'm pessimistic on most of what Sony does these days yet everything, to me, still sounds like it's 2022, especially if they were announcing collectors editions originally today, that doesn't sound like a game delay, it just sounds like an announcement delay.
Edit: That other article... Why....how.....this is why gamers are shunned in society...... There's something seriously wrong with huge parts of the gaming hobby.
Hopefully in the future Playstation announce their future titles a bit closer to the release date. The recent Last Of Us Part 1 reveal is a good example.
I want this game out so we can move on & hear about whatever else Playstation have been working on (of course I'll play and enjoy it though)
@AdamNovice
Best game this new generation for me, so far.
So when did Sony announce they would be releasing information on GOW on the 30th? As far as I know Sony hasn't said anything about announcements, so my obvious question is how has Sony "delayed" anything?
@AdamNovice They have spent months fixing the game, its had tons of patches and they used State of Play to announce Performance Mode is fixed because yes it was broken, it looked horrible and required a complete rework to sort it out. Sure no game of this scale is 100% bug free but Horizon needed more time as the past few months of endless patches have shown. For a Sony 1st Party release it was more Days Gone then Spider-Man in polish and no amount of fanboying over it will change that fact.
I understand it's frustrating for some but they need to have a little patience. The news will come. I think the delay is to do with recent news in the US. We've had quite a good number of reveals delayed due to big news hitting the headlines. Sony want the hype. They will want to be the thing we all talk about so they will pick a moment when news is quieter
Like all games, it comes out when it comes out. Like do you really need all that much advance notice for a $60-$70 purchase? Really don't get how out of hand this has gotten.
@KayOL77 this is very true... lets hope 🤞😁
@WallyWest
The game definitely needed more polish. But it was completely playable with no game breaking glitches. And quality mode was very good, which sort of made up for performance mode’s problems.
It wasn’t Cyberpunk. Or Battlefield 2042. Those games didn’t work at all when they launched. And 2042 barely works now.
many people are fortunate enough to have a shiny new ps5 at their disposal and yet they are as miserable as ever lol... do games provide people with joy or anger is the question... people treat games as an addiction.... something that needs to be devoured and consumed swifly... then it is on to the next thing. no time to appreciate and reflect on the experience. those people would be better off finding a new hobby at this point.
as for sony not putting out a release date... it tells me that the game is going to come out hot, meaning it likely won't be as polished as it should be if they are still aiming for a 2022 release. otherwise, they would have announced it by now. they are better off delaying it in that case.
Lol... i don't understand who are these people with so much free time they have nothing to play and have time to go harass developers on release dates.
@Porco "do games provide people with joy or anger is the question"
I think the popularity of rage inducing games like souls indicates a lot of gamers somehow find joy in inducing anger...
You right about addiction tough. Considering gaming uses a lot of gambling psychology and is based on rushes of adrenaline and dopamine, and add to it the icd tendencies among gamers, and it quite literally is a drug addiction even if the drug is naturally produced in the body.
@NEStalgia i can agree with what you said, but my post was coming at the issue more from a metaphorical angle. are games and their addictive nature causing some people to be unhappy? would they be better off without gaming in their lives? it sounds like the gaming industry stirrs up a lot of anger and resentment in some individuals — to the point where they are sending threatening messages to developers. it is as if those people do not play games for the art and entertainment value any more... gaming has become a core of their existence with certain IP being their soul. taking video games too seriously would be an understatement in these cases.
@Porco hah, yeah I can definitely agree with that! Tbh I still can't figure out even with that what would cause the reactions these people are having with this game. It's not like the game is cancelled. Or years away. Even if it's somehow their souls and identities, even if it's delayed it's not like these people's soul/identity is being wounded, it's just late....
You're totally right... Yet even that doesn't explain the behavior we see.
You need to change the wording of your other article. Those aren't fans sending those pics to the team. Trolls might be more suitable.
@WadeIsInsane I never placed it alongside CP2077 that was someone else putting words in my mouth and i said Performance Mode was broken not the game itself, if wasn't broken why fix it and make a point of it on State of Play?
@WallyWest Does CP2077 run good now on last gen or is it acceptable.
Whoever is participating in the despicable behavior going on with harassing the people working on this game, they need professional help. I am being serious. This is a HOBBY, there are far more important things to be concerned with, and spending energy on. Good grief. There are plenty of games to play. The game will be dated when they are ready. Be kind, and respect each other! It is ok to disagree, but do it respectfully.
Release date reveal.. What's next, a movie about the release date. Lame
@beebs720 Online Trolls are only the one that I think who could do it maybe its from the other side why would a fan do that unless their have mental problem.
@Smithylfc2008 Same thoughts here! Honestly don't get why people are going crazy waiting.
My gaming backlog is immense and just keeps growing with every month that passes lol...I will prob never finish them all before I die.
Totally agree with @WadeIsInsane @AdamNovice
@WallyWest Words are important. Hyperbole and exaggeration aren’t helpful else how do we distinguish between games that are severely broken like AC: Unity, Fallout 76 or CyberPunk and games with smaller issues like Horizon: FW.
Phrases like “broken as hell”, “was a mess at launch” about H:FW are pure hyperbole, it’s not honest or helpful. Let’s put it in proper perspective.
There was a visual shimmering issue that a small but vocal minority didn’t like and found distracting. Performance mode was entirely playable for the vast majority at launch, hardly broken or a mess, you just didn’t like the visual artifacting.
There was also some unwanted pop-in during some situations and there were also some smaller issues, quest pathing, clipping etc. which frankly are to be expected in a game of this grand size, scope and complexity. No game releases without bugs.
Did it need another couple of months polish, yes sure, but calling it broken or a mess are both untruthful and unhelpful.
Where's the guy with his hair smoking? He Is a wizard with the comments lol.
I'm eager to play this game, but I can wait whatever the time needed. There are so many good ones to play right now!!
And while all this marketing tat goes on many real games from indies and smaller studios get left under the radar....modern gaming in a nutshell. It's worse than politics.
@Flaming_Kaiser Don't know as i play the PS5 version what is really solid thankfully. I get the impression its playable on PS4 now but not much else, my advice to any PS4 player is wait until you have a PS5 as the difference is massive.
@themightyant Ok it wasn't a mess despite the endless weekly patches fixing endless bugs and sure Performance Mode wasn't broken despite them having to completely rework it and then announce its better on State of Play. You play Horizon at launch on an OLED? Yeah my mate did and he had to stop playing because it looked dreadful on performance mode on an OLED, the issues were more then just shimmering.
Yes. I played it for 120 hours at launch, mostly on performance mode, as did many with no major issues. I'm aware some people had issue with the mode and it offended their eyes, but 'broken' is a huge overstatement.
Name a game of that size and scope that doesn't have frequent post launch updates, that's just the way of development nowadays. Yes it could have done with a couple months more polish, it was a little rough around the edges, but it was never a broken mess. Two different things.
@WadeIsInsane Well yeah my friend did what would you rather i say? Lie and say my BF? GF? Brother? Lie and say it looks terrible the OLED i don't have? Strange reply.
Look Digital Foundry done a whole video covering it. There's tons of videos of people showing how bad it looked and while not exactly credible the Subreddit was full of people on launch asking if others are having problems or people complaining because they were having problems. I myself quickly switched to Quality because of how awful Performance Mode looked. Also name another Dev that has used a thing like State of Play to say Performance Mode is better now? If there was barely an issue they would keep quiet.
Finally why do people keep bringing up CP76? Whataboutism is too popular with people who can't admit their new fav thing has issues. End of day this is Pushsquare the home to PS fanboys so god forbid you point out flaws in Horizon, hell the original guy who responded to me has Aloy as their avatar so need i say more? Yes it was a mess at launch, you see Skill Up's review? He has video footage of it and again if there was no real issues why have GG been putting out a lot of big updates since launch designed to fix bugs and improve visuals, you ever read the patch notes? They were't small.
