Wow! Marvel’s Spider-Man is far and away the biggest series in Sony’s stable, with Insomniac Games’ two superhero themed titles combining to sell 33 million copies, as of 15th May. That’s a truly jaw-dropping number: we’re talking peak Nintendo and Rockstar numbers here. Remember that there have only been two titles in the franchise thus far – Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – and they’ve been exclusive to just the PS5 and PS4. They’ll launch on PC later this year and will presumably sell many millions more copies there.
Spider-Man is, of course, the hottest superhero on the planet – and he’s recently seen his popularity soar once more thanks to Tom Holland’s take on the character. But it’s important to remember that Activision was making Spider-Man games for years, and they never came close to matching these numbers – that’s testament to both great marketing from Sony and superb execution from Insomniac Games. We can’t wait for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

I wouldn't be surprised if that number doubles once they come to PC.
Marvel definitely found their unicorn with PlayStation.
Spider-Man 2 is going to be a monster
let this bad boy go free and put it on the plus services already
@AdamNovice i hope that monster ate any miles and mary jane stealth segments from the game . if they bring that ***** back , i swear….
@nomither6 They will be on the Plus services...?
Those are some pretty insane numbers. Bodes well for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 next year.
The amount they made from Spiderman is more than what they paid for Insomniac. Absolutely insanity!
@nomither6
They are. Confirmed titles on PS Plus Extra and Premium.
Outright purchasing Insomniac is one of the best decisions Sony has made recently
@Netret0120 oh wow , they just announced it or something ?
@Enuo Doubles? Are you tripping? Even God of War only sold 800K on PC. And Horizon Zero Down has only done 2 million on PC in how many years now? PC gaming ain't really into console games.
@JAMes-BroWWWn wait, really? Do we have official numbers from Sony?
PC players definitely making it out better than PS5 players.
So come August you'll be able to buy Spider-Man Remastered on PC but not Playstation? That's a bit odd.
Still great numbers from their games and thoroughly deserved
@naruball Yes, Sony released the official numbers last week. And God of War was 900k not 800k. My bad. But still ridiculously low for such a game.

@JAMes-BroWWWn You release a 4 year old game for 50 bucks while not only not porting the previous games in the franchise, but also allowing people to sign up for PS Now and stream it for many years in advance(like I did). Factor in the price and preferences of PC gamers(we are mostly into strategy games and porn) and you shouldn't expect more than 2 millions copies.
@Bismarck You clearly don't need to play the previous games as they haven't even sold 20 million combined but God of War 2018 has. Ergo most players bought and played God of War 2018 without playing the previous installments. PS Now has been a flop ever since its release. Especially, on PC. I don't expect anything above 3 million on any single player game Sony publishes on PC. (MP games might be a different story though)
@JAMes-BroWWWn PS Now may have been a failure overall, but most people I know played the Sony exclusives they were interested in for only 10 bucks. You can bet your sweet little ass I ain't paying full price for any of those games now.
No matter the number it appears that Sony are more than happy with their PC revenue.
@JAMes-BroWWWn thanks. That's crazy... Something tells me it was heavily pirated.
@Bismarck It does not really matter if you or anyone you know played Sony first party games on PS Now. The numbers speak volume. PS Now barely was able to maintain 3 million subs and that's across PC and Playstation consoles. So the PS Now argument is irrelevant.
I don't know if Sony is happy about the numbers or if they just act so to please their investors.
Regardless, these numbers are incredibly low. They ain't selling a tenth or even in some cases a twentieth on PC what they managed to achieve on their consoles. These numbers are nothing in comparison of how many PC players there are. Apparently the PC market is a different market after all.
@JAMes-BroWWWn I can provide some counter arguments, but facts speak louder than words. Sony will port all of their games to PC and even provide a way for PC players to stream them in advance.
PC games sell more steadily over time. H:ZD and GoW will both sell 5M+ but it will take years from release. That’s pretty good for late ports.
It should be noted however that H:ZD’s revenue from PC, $60M, is actually more than the game’s original budget on PS4. The port would have cost a fraction of that.
The PC numbers sound small because of how absurdly successful the games are on PS consoles.
Sony estimate PC revenue of $300M this year. That’s the budget of multiple AAA games
@Netret0120 definitely. Insomniac seem a bargain compared to their bungie purchase…
@nomither6 Im pretty sure they announced it in the very first blog post about the new PS Plus.
The downside is that it seems to include Miles Morales PS5 but not SM Remastered (so you only get the PS4 version of the original).
Selling near 1 million copies of a 3-4 years old port is a great number. Definitely outweights the porting investment.
And I feel that is what Sony is aiming for, keep the exclusivity on their platform but provide alternative playing avenues (and slow and steady cash flow from older IP) when hype dies down.
sorry but for me spiderman main campaign was good but the open world busy work was just pure filler and tedious to boot.
Miles morales was dlc sold as a full game
33M+ sales is very impressive for a game on a single platform. When the games come to PC, they'll easily cross over the 40M mark. There is a large market of folks on PC that, no matter what, don't game on consoles, so it is smart Sony is finally growing their revenue by selling games to those folks. Their strategy is smarter than Microsoft's, in my opinion. By releasing their games on PC a year or more later, they ensure PlayStation consoles are the best place to play their games for a period of time, which will drive console sales. Meanwhile, Xbox releases their games day one on PC, so Xbox is never the best place to play their games. There will always be people buying consoles because it's the best bang for the buck for gaming, but I can clearly see the wisdom in still pushing PlayStation harder than PC for Sony.
Damn thats more than all xbox one and series x exclusives combined based on sales
@JAMes-BroWWWn wow that's absurdly low, after seeing pc players complain about a lack of a port for so long 😳
Guess bb and this won't be selling very much either then, and I would assume a lot of people just pirate it looking at these retail prices anyway.
All i want is a physical release of the first Spidey remastered. You could boost sales even more!
Crazy to think Insomniac were struggling a few years ago and now they’re leading the pack. What a turnaround. These numbers are insane.
@carlos82 Any game is still purchaseable on ps store regardless of whether or not it's on any service as well...
@KayOL77 you can't buy Spider-Man Remastered on Playstation, even today
@Bismarck Sure, Sony will continue putting their games on PC but they still won't sell many units as we know now, by given numbers and facts.
@Cherip-the-Ripper Exactly. I was shocked too. I had seen these port beggings everywhere. So I assumed these games gonna sell 5 to 10 million with ease as they sell 20 million on Playstation consoles. But they barely do a twentieth of that. That's borderline insulting.
@carlos82 Yes you can. You need a miles Morales disc on ps5 and upgrade in game with purchase.
Nicely done... great games.
If Valve is smart they would do some sort of cross promotion for Spiderman+SteamDeck with Sony.
@KayOL77 that's my point you can't just buy the game
@Agramonte and give us Half Life Alyx for PSVR2 😉
God of War: a 4 year old game being sold for near full price when new sold 970K copies on PC. Meanwhile you can get a PS4 copy for $20 on the PS store and even less for a disc at retail. Mind boggling how some in here are "shocked" by the "low" numbers. Obviously Sony are happy that their overpriced old ports are selling over half a million copies on a system where one can obtain these games free of cost through a simple Google search.
Also if you check SteamDB, God of War has yet to actually go on sale since being released in January. So those 970K copies are all at the $50 price tag in the span of 2 MONTHS (sales figures linked above are as of March 2022). You guys are picking the wrong thing to be shocked about imo
@ryanburnsred If you make a good, quality high production game that's very memorable and put it on pc running very well from one of the most talented studios on the planet, why should you NOT be able to put it up at £50? Going to all that trouble to release on a platform where piracy can be rife and wanting a profit. It's unthinkable. 😋
@KayOL77 exactly lol, my guy is picking the wrong thing to be shocked about
@nomither6 PREACH! No more boring stealth segments, just Spidey all day all night please!
@carlos82 What's the difference between ps5 Spiderman patch and Spiderman remastered?
@Cherip-the-Ripper £45m revenue is very tidy for a 4yr old game within a recent two month window 😋
@KayOL77 I don't think the PS4 Spider-Man has a PS5 patch but Remastered has 60fps, Ray Tracing modes and weirdly a new face for Peter Parker
@Cherip-the-Ripper @KayOL77 you guys seem to completely miss my point. The game made its money on console and I'm sure it doesn't take the same budget to port it as it did to develop it. They can charge whatever they want but your comment doesn't invalidate my point at all.
“The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It's by giving those people a service that's better than what they're receiving from the pirates.” - Gabe Newell
If you've been around awhile you'd know what Steam is best known for. These old games are selling hundreds of thousands of copies at near full price. Yeah that's something to be shocked about, not the sales numbers compared to the platform where it had been available for 4 years prior with numerous discounts. If you guys can't understand that then I can't help you
@ryanburnsred Well, then. Please explain your point further. What would you do were you in charge of the situation?
@KayOL77 I did explain further... I'm saying these games are selling well at the price point they are at considering their age. All of these games can be had for far lower prices on PS4 yet they are all over half a million copies sold on Steam at near full price. Meanwhile others here are shocked by the "low" numbers. I don't know how else to say it? I also don't know how I'm shocked by the wrong thing? Maybe you can explain to me why it's expected these old games being sold for $50 are expected to meet or exceed PS4 lifetime sales with numerous discounts over the years. HZD sales on Steam are still priced higher than the regular PS store price yet it's got over 2.3 million purchases under its belt. That's impressive.
@ryanburnsred Ok, I have my wires crossed regarding what you have been getting at. I'm in support of Sony getting money and as much of it as possible because they keep upping the game(pun intended). Also I expect god of war to get a bigger sales jump when Ragnarok comes out near end of year because more people are going to ask 'What is this god of war all about then?'. I incorrectly thought your first post was anti pc sales. It looks like we're actually kind of on the same wavelength after all. My apologies.
@KayOL77 no worries. I enjoy some of the conversations here. Yes I'm applauding the sales figures while others here are seeing these numbers as negatives. I'm just pointing out that these games are doing well on PC, well enough for Sony to continue their efforts in porting their back catalog. I'll be buying both Spiderman games on Steam and free up some much needed space on my PS4 😁
@carlos82
100% on Alyx on PSVR2... I think the VR space is to small for games to be divided by hardware.
ALYX+PSVR2 bundle would be amazing
The more SteamDeck and PSVR2 get sold the better it will be for the handheld and VR markets. Win+Win for gamers 👍
