Final Fantasy X is either one of the best entries in the legendary series, the end of a golden age, or both, depending on who you ask and what day it is. Its direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2, proved divisive when it launched, but has its diehard fans and is an impressive game in its own right.
Regardless, the memorable tale of sacrifice and loss told across both games has proven popular and enduring. Square Enix confirmed to Gematsu that the combined sales of both titles had surpassed 20.8 million units as of September 2021.
Back in 2013, Square Enix announced that 14 million units had been sold across the initial PS2 releases of both titles. We can assume then that the Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster collection (which launched later in 2013) has likely made up the additional 6.8 million units. If you want our full thoughts on the matter, we reviewed the collection on both PS4 and Vita.
What do you think of this impressive milestone, achieved over 21 years after its initial release? Where do you rank Final Fantasy X and X-2 in the pantheon of Final Fantasy games? Tell your own story in the comments section below.

Really enjoyed X, even though the story became confusing by the end. You could sink hours into Blitzball alone.
Favourite game of all time nevermind favourite final fantasy game! Played it first when i was 10/11 and thought it was amazing, adult Pokémon 😯.
Glad to see this and would love square to make a proper remake some dwy and flesh it out slightly.
The music in this game was classic Nobuo Uematsu.
@djhegzy Though Pokemon really is kid-Megaten...
@ApostateMage that piano into/outro gets you every time. Xenoblade channels that same theme, but uematsu is the master.
I preferred the story of X but the gameplay of X-2 felt a little more refined to me.
“Final Fantasy X is either one of the best entries in the legendary series or marks the end of a golden age”
Isn’t it both?
And it is a great game, but I struggle going back to it despite all the highlights I remember because some sections really drag, the temples in particular.
Well X had all you need for a great FF, cheesy dialogue and story, great music, nice " abilities and level progression, great looking weapons, fun side quests and secrets and of course a nice grind if you want to see it all
I remember Sin, was it a whale or whatever the heck, dunno why Japanese games create some weird looking silly things as a last boss. Monster Hunter World had this funny looking creature at the end. Elden Ring also has some stupid looking Elden Beast like wth...
@ApostateMage Yep I still listen to FFX's soundtrack till today.
I have such great memories of playing X in school and in college. Beating those secret bosses was thrilling at the time.
I'm one of the folks who didn't get on well with X-2 at all though. I didn't enjoy the sequels to XIII either. The sequels seem to be cursed for me.
Regardless of my own opinions on the sequels, this is a well deserved milestone.
That’s great to hear. Both games deserve every one of those sales. 🙂 Amazing stuff. FFX is the game that got me into RPGs and will always hold a special place in my heart. And FFX-2 is my favourite FF game. The battle system was awesome, and so was the music.
@kyleforrester87 you're right. That could have been clearer. Updated
@ApostateMage amazing wasn't it.
What a great game.
This is by far the best ff. The best story is prob the 1st 3rd of ff7. They should release ffvi on xbox but they leaches. Im not playing your system. Peace.
One month after being on ps+ surely its no coincidence😅 I bet we will hear many more games announce millions of sales out of nowhere.
Well deserved for a timeless classic. I'm currently playing it on the Switch and X has aged like a fine wine! Still as charming as ever. I'm also a X-2 defender. That game gets way too much hate. It was actually the first JRPG I ever played as a kid which I know is blasphemy to many older FF fans. 😄
I wonder if we ever will see X-3 come to fruition someday. If it does happen I honestly don't know how my reaction would go. I'd be very shocked and happy that's for sure!
@Arisen I think these announcements are all part of the ongoing 35th anniversary of Final Fantasy celebrations.
@NEStalgia FFX and XC match up pretty well, w/ Wakka - Reyn being the most obvious, but there's some Tidus in Shulk and Auron in Dunban. My family is convinced Rikku - Rikki isn't a coincidence.😂
@kyleforrester87 Good call on the "why not both". 12 was a good game but pretty lame story wise. I still like 7 & 8 more than 10 but the jump from 9 to 10 is incredible, the last video game revolution. Those trial and error trials are trash, no rhyme or reason. Blitzball is a just a running joke to us.
My kid is playing this now. We own the original disc on PS2 but don't have a PS2 so we bought HD. Ject boss at the end currently wearing him out, nobody has time for collecting 10 orbs in a 3D area with no camera control each time. They couldn't put a save orb on the walkway before the cutscene? 🤷
@rjejr 12 has a hell of a lot going for it, but it had development issues that pretty clearly impacted on the finished game and, along with 11, seemed to mark an unfortunate turning point for the franchise.
@Voltan Why would they only announce ffx sales tho? Anyway the article even says "as of September 2021" so ps+ had no impact then! What a milestone for a 21 year old game.
I’ve gone back and forth a bit over the years, but I’d say X is my favorite FF game of all time. As much as VII blew us away on PS1, X was even more mind blowing compared to the previous generation. The story is awesome even though a little weird and the combat mechanics are close to perfect, and no FF has done the OP end game content better.
FFX still has one of the best romances in the series. Loved the mini game, characters and the story. I did not like the ending, so I was happy that FFX-2 fixed that up.
Also, even though FFX-2 gets alot of hate, it is still one of the few adventure games that the main female lead has a romantic male partner (or had lol). I also liked the female characters development from the first game to now.
For me it is the best Final Fantasy game and it's one of my top 5 games, I love it.
X is the last god-tier final fantasy for me. At the time i don't think i fully appreciated it (9 is my favourite game of all time) but replaying it on the Vita a few years later cemented its place as one of the best games in the series.
I wonder if the rumoured 10-3 will ever see the light of day in that case given the success of the series
Final Fantasy X is like the best of the bad ones, I think.
2 classics, time-sinking games I played a lot on PS2 and PS4. Will always love the world of Spira, a world worthy saving. If I had more time, I would try to complete both games these days.
What a game. I played it for the first time in 08 and it actually kept me away from my new 360 for a while. Very tough plat.
The game itself was awesome. The battle system is one of the best ever in an RPG. The Sphere grid was incredibly fun.
The main character and some of the writing was terrible. There were some greats though...Lulu, Auron, Kimahri. Tidus and Wakka were just awful.
It balances out to be a good game that should have been great had it the character and writing quality of VII and IX.
@johncalmc LOL, that's exactly how I'd describe it!
@rjejr I seriously wonder what the reasoning is for the XC cast largely being the FFX cast. There's something to that. Nomura (character designer on FFX) isn't credited for XC1, but it is credited for XC2, having designed the Torna characters/organization. I would not be at all surprised if he was quietly involved in the original cast creation. There are a lot of chains and buckles there....
@kyleforrester87 The turning point was probably more about Sakaguchi leaving after 12. He was the heart of what FF "'is" and since then everyone that's taken it over has a different vision of what "FF" is, and none of them even think it's an RPG.
Absolutely incredible game. It's one of those games that if you experienced it at the time, it just sort of stays in your memory as something really special forever. I remember talking about it with this really "hard" lad in work one day, an we both simultaneously looked at eachother and said "that ending tho" and both teared up! That was a proper gut punch ending (spoiler alert for a 21 year old game) that will probably always be my favourite ending of a game ever. Cried Infront of my girlfriend and she tried to make fun of me but then burst into tears herself 😂
Platinumed on PS3,4 and would do so again on PS5 after having 100% it on Ps2
Fave game of all time. Changed me forever
That's my favourite FF! I always liked the idea of Blitzball but I was rubbish at it. Would be very interesting to see what it could look and feel like if SE was to make the sport today.
Alternative viewpoint: FFX, aside from its impressive visual-audio improvements at the time, was a disappointment. Really simple battle system. Excessively linear game progression that only compares favorably to the hallway-like FFXIII in that regard. One of the most irritating protagonists in the series. Blitzball represents THE most intrusive side/mini-game in the series, bar none. And surprisingly bland music, apart from a few great tracks.
But then, I'm one of those heretics who think FFXII is a top three game in the series, so what do I know?
I have memories of the PS1, PS2 era and all the JRPGs I played. FFX was one of my favorites. To go back to a time where people camped outside of a retailer for a JRPG? Miss those days. After PS2 I followed my friends into the CoD/Fifa era and started playing games on PC like league. But, my fondest memories are always of the hayday of the Japanese gaming era.
I feel its only a matter of time before it comes back to prominence. Lets see what FF16 does. This massive online games like fortnite are entertaining, but they don't create memories for me like the classics did.
A beautiful game and one of the best JRPG of all time.
Glad to hear it's successful after so many years.
Final Fantasy X is my second favorite entry in the entire Final Fantasy series. It was also the very first Final Fantasy game that I played. Final Fantasy VII is my overall favorite entry in the franchise, but Final Fantasy X comes very, very close to it for me. The game will always hold a special place in my heart. And this news of the game and its sequel selling 20 million units in its lifetime, well, Isn't it Wonderful? (Pun intended)
@DapopeOfSmoke
Sir, Final Fantasy Tactics is the greatest of all Final Fantasies.
Followed very closely by VI, IV, VII and IX.
It was the one the first games I bought for my PS2. I was mega hyped to play it since I’m a final fantasy nut to this day.
But I don’t have super fond memories of it. Mainly because I was comparing it to VII, Tactics, VI, and IV at that time. I was disappointed by the game. The story was a mess, the voice acting was terrible (MGS2 spoiled me), and the only character I really gelled with was Auron. He was a badass design with a badass personality.
But I did enjoy the battle system. It’s something I’ve noticed about myself. I enjoy every battle and leveling system the series has ever had. Even FFII’s wonky nonsense (probably explains why I love the Saga series). I really like FFXIII’s battle system even if the rest of that game is trash.
So for me, X is one of my lesser liked FF titles. It’s not on the bottom of my list by any means; that honor belongs to XIII. But it’s nowhere near the top.
