Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier has reassured God of War fans that the sequel to Santa Monica Studio's 2018 hit is still on track to release this November. In a post on ResetEra, he says the game is still set to launch in November "as of this week", and the team behind it is "pretty excited".
After talking to sources, Schreier explains: "I can definitively say that there was a release date/pre-order announcement planned for yesterday. It was bumped at some point last week. I don't know why." Apparently, speculation points to the delay being due to the recent Roe v Wade decision in the USA. Sony has delayed its announcements and events in the past because of real-life events, with its first PS5 showcase in 2020 pushed back due to the Black Lives Matter protests at the time.
The writer then goes on to say that because Sony has been trying to keep its secrets very close to its chest, many Santa Monica Studio employees weren't even told about the company's initial plans to confirm a release date yesterday. Although, those working on the title are said to be in high spirits about the sequel. "People working on it say it's huge and seem to be pretty excited about it. Reminds me of the buzz I was hearing before the 2018 one," Schreier said.
As one of the most reliable journalists in the industry, Schreier's post will be welcome news to God of War Ragnarok enthusiasts as it doesn't sound like the game will be delayed into 2023 at the time of writing. The post comes after Tom Henderson first suggested yesterday was the day for the game's launch date unveiling as well as collector's edition reveals.
It then came out that God of War "fans" were sending unsolicited nudes to studio employees to try and get the release date out of them. "I cannot believe I even have to say this but don’t f*cking send d*ck pics to anyone on this team, or anyone in this industry for that matter. They are busting their ass to make some[thing] for you to enjoy. Show some f*cking respect," Cory Barlog said in response.

Sounds Krate(os) to me! Can’t wait for Ragnarok on PS5.
Tbh if they really delayed the announcement because of that ruling the previous week then that's dumb. About as dumb as Nintendo not releasing that Advance Wars remaster because of a war in the world which we always seem to have going on.
I really couldn’t be more excited for this and I hope SSM knows that their fan base is so much more than…whatever they’ve been receiving. I for one appreciate the hard work and dedication!
Not trying to upset anyone with this comment but that's a silly reason if it's true that it's tied to the Roe V Wade decision. That has nothing to do with a rumored video game release date announcement so the connection is a bit of a head scratcher there. Regardless the anger over the announcement not happening was totally unjustified.
As for the rumored November release that sounds like the logical month for it. Here's hoping the team can make it.
@Korgon @PSfan4Life22 That wouldn't be the first time. Not exactly the same situation but somewhat similar - they did delay a State Of Play stream that was originally scheduled during the George Floyd protests in the USA in 2020. Of course - back then the protests were much more severe, turning to outright riots at times.
That makes me believe it could've been the reason and we'll probably get an announcement in the next couple weeks.
Honestly I just hope they don't launch pre-orders while I'm at a festival next week - which could make getting the collector's edition difficult
While I don't mind of its 2023 but if it has to be Nov let it be 22.11.22.
Cool.take your time.cant wait for another masterpiece 🐐 👑.word up son
Delayed due to a situational case in the USA. I don’t believe that for one minute. But if true what a rubbish company decision Sony made.
It’s has nothing to do with gaming at all and was the other week not this week any way.
Also regardless the game will sell what it sells.
Sony should be far more concerned about making more PS5, they are down in the USA, nearly over taken by series consoles and now getting close in Europe by a console with no exclusives at all in 2022.
Let alone the loss in game and peripheral sales and PSN memberships etc etc.
I have a theory Sony’s plan to get everyone to move on from the PS4 is to release GOW2 on it.
GOW1 almost melted my PS4, GOW2 sounds like it will finish the job.

Yeah your right I remember that. That one kinda rubbed me the wrong way too back in the day even though like you said the riots were out of control and whatnot. I guess I just think since Sony is a global corporation it just feels weird to cancel/delay things because something controversial is happening in the US. Controversial things happen every day everywhere in the world.
As someone who lives in the US I don't need to be coddled by my game console manufacturer. It's kind of embarrassing really. I'm a big boy Playstation I can take of myself!🤣
@Korgon tbf USA is easily their biggest single market - they might have a bigger market share in Europe and Asia but those are multiple "small" markets
Sending nudes to devs to persuade them to reveal a release date ,wtf 😂😂 whats wrong with people.
@Voltan
True plus their headquarters are in the US as well now these days. Oh well it is what it is I guess.
@MidnightDragonDX it dont help when sites like this post it like it's legit news ,if you feed the monkeys all they gonna do is carrying on pushing out *hit
I honestly think they delayed the release date reveal because they aren’t 100% sure of it yet. And don’t want to be bit in the ass if they say November and it ends up needing a delay to early 2023. Also don’t believe that they delayed the announcement over the SC ruling. Almost a week had passed since that happened.
MGB did a show yesterday where he said a dev friend of his told him the game is 40-46 hrs long. Hoping that’s the case!
@PSfan4Life22 Still amuses me Nintendo didn't delay Triangle Strategy in that same period, which is a brutal war drama that involves a country invading a geographical neighbor in a way that was eerily similar to how Putin had planned his invasion of Ukraine to roll out.
God of War Ragnarok Is 'Still on Track for November', Game Is 'Huge'
Unlike the tiny gherkin pics they sent. Sony fanboys, people👏👏👏

@77dreams This guy gets it.
@77dreams I think the only ones that didn't get it are the ones that agreed with it.
@tallythwack Says the tallywhacker man lol

I'll give Schreier credit in that he has somehow managed to gain a bunch of industry contacts. That's in spite of his personality which is atrocious.
Another article speculating about the time frame for a God of War announcement? What are you guys going to write about when they give us an official release date?
@77dreams Exactly, people saying that it makes no sense because the Roe v Wade thing isn't related to gaming are missing the point.
Guys get this, women exist. They are around half of the population and they also participate in society! So a ruling of them not being able to essentially govern their bodies that should be left to their choice is HUGE. My words cannot describe how bad it is, but 77 said it best.
Edit: I get that its in USA but that doesn't change the point
@Stevemalkpus The usual; post an article announcing the date, comment on the 'controversy' that controversed absolutely no one and move on.

Still not played god of war yet, really need to get round to it but Elden ring has taken so much of my time lately
@Korgon
Yes indeed. I’m not saying I believe this rumour is true but it makes sense at least.

@Stevemalkpus even if they give us an official date, there could be articles about "insiders" who know for a fact that the game will be delayed for x reason, unless it's not delayed, in which case they were totes right the first time and Sony just changed their mind, because the source was legit.

This game's getting delayed lol
Why is there so much opposition to this game? It's been met with pressure to be delayed from the second it was announced.

November's gonna be exciting if this is true.
@Crumbytweak I’d love to be in your position to go in fresh with it. Amazing game.
I think the most ridiculous thing about all of this and honestly Sony and the first party studios as a whole, is there complete lack of communication in any form. Literally nothing for months and months.
The fact that we have to get our info from leakers and through Journalist hearsay is the real problem here.
Then you have a slough of gaming websites continously making excuses for their business practices for them. This is especially evident when you see concerns over the increasing tendency to re release games with minor graphical improvements and yet claim they are from the ground up rebuilt remakes, only to have it be the gaming websites and journalists trying to sway public opinion and convince the masses they aren't seeing what they are seeing and it's worth another full price release of largely the same game....
Pokemon has my time in November but I hope this comes this year too for fans.
Why keep this game such a secret, I wanna play it but I fully expect it will still look like and play like god of war
@theMEGAniggle It was ruled not a constitutional right and the power to decide was given to the states so the people can decide.
@Smiffy01 you assume I'm a man ,how very 20th century of you.
shame it's a limited PS4 game coming out almost 2 years after the PS5 released. Honestly, it might have come out sooner if they didn't have to struggle with the PS4.
