We’re getting déjà vu, because once again The Last of Us series is subject to another damaging leak. How this keeps happening to Naughty Dog’s flagship franchise is hard to understand, but the very real reality is there’s well over a month until The Last of Us: Part I launches, and we’ll have probably seen the release in its entirety by then. At least there can be no spoilers this time around.
No, in fact, it certainly appears that revisiting The Last of Us Remastered will provide you with much the same experience, because based on the several minutes of gameplay we’ve seen thus far, this is stretching the definition of a “remake”. The Californian developer has spoken at length about “modernised gameplay”, with some staffers exclaiming on social media that the action now matches The Last of Us 2.
Does it really, though?
To be fair, we’re seeing a very sloppy leaker fumble through some early combat sequences from what may not be the final build, so we shouldn’t draw too many conclusions from it. But the dodge and dive mechanics from the sequel don’t appear to exist, and frankly we’re not seeing a massive difference in the AI or encounter design. Honestly, it looks the same – even down to Ellie carelessly running around.
We’re willing to continue to give Naughty Dog the benefit of the doubt until it presents the game properly, but we’re beginning to worry now. It always felt curious how Sony led with cutscenes from the supposed remake, as they don’t exactly impress next to the pre-rendered footage from the original game. But the team kept reiterating on Twitter that this has been a huge endeavour and that the gameplay has been upgraded, so we remained optimistic.
But now, with these leaks, we’re beginning to ponder whether the developer has been keeping actual combat footage quiet because it’s not the leap forward it has led us to believe. It still has over a month to state its case, of course, and a confident and assured presentation could help the developer wrestle back control and put many of these concerns to bed. But the race is now on; at this rate, we’re probably going to end up with full-length livestreams within weeks.
The game does look better, there’s no doubt about that – footage of Tess, in particular, is visually striking. But with an eye-watering £69.99/$69.99 asking price, and multiplayer removed from the original release – well, we’re not all that impressed overall. Not at all. We just hope that these leaks aren’t representative of the final product, otherwise those “not a cash grab” quotes are going to come back to bite the developer in the butt.
And hard.
How are you feeling about these The Last of Us: Part I leaks? Were you expecting the gameplay to look a lot different, or does the footage align with what you anticipated all along? See if you can survive the comments section below.

Naughty dog need to come out with a gameplay video themselves highlighting the gameplay improvements or they are going to lose a whole lot of potential buyers.
Well we all know ND aren't above lying to their fans. Look what they did with the TLoU2 trailer. They edited Joel into the parts of the game that was the roles of other characters. So I'd wait until release before believing anything they say.
This is all so true. After seeing the leaked gameplay I got a little bit angry about what ND been telling us. If this is actually it!? Then it’s most definitely a cashgrab. I was just waiting for Joel to go prone and sneak in grass or something? Nothing like that tho, and the cutscenes aren’t very impressive compared to the og one. What has happened with ND? Is this still a studio I can blindly trust? I’m starting to think not.
I'm still a bit in shock to be honest. I'm seeing the gameplay footage right there in front of me, but I just can't believe it because it's not what they've described.
Surely there's got to be more to this... Right?
If you have never played it, its still one of the best narratives in games and you should give it a try. If you have already, even if there is new ai (which it doesn't look like there is in the build leaked), you can probably give it a miss.
@starbuck2212 Most Sony studios do this in the build up to launch now.
The Forbidden West gameplay reveal featured narrative that didn't exist in the final game.
It's just misdirection to avoid spoilers.
There is no way that this is a remake. It's just The Last of Us Remastered: Part II.
The gameplay I watched was down right sad. It's probably just me but NG seems like its been struggling a little since Uncharted 4. Hope they can get back on track. What I've seen is no where close to $70.
Sammy took the words right out of my mouth.
It's like watching gameplay for the Remaster.
@get2sammyb Hard to believe they'd shoot themselves in the foot like this. Why risk consumer goodwill over a remake/remaster?
Still, kinda glad I hadn't pre-ordered.
@starbuck2212 well that whole thing was super cool tho! And I have to applaud ND for how they handled the trailers for Last of us part 2. I think it was great, and last of us part 2 had one of the best most amazing stories I’ve ever seen in a game. Was blown away, part 1 and 2 is a masterpiece of a story! But, can’t trust ND with this remaster, it looks like a cashgrab
@starbuck2212 That's different, though. That's preserving the plot. Okay, you may not have liked the way the story went, but I'm fine with that.
I'm less cool with them saying gameplay has been redone when it looks practically identical, though.
Will give them the benefit of the doubt until they present the game for now.

@get2sammyb I’ve seen another 2 min video on YouTube that has the workbench mechanic from 2 and then similar gameplay to this video. Lot of people losing faith with naughty dog at this point
@Flaming_Kaiser Did we? I seem to remember us recommending Returnal a lot.
I'm not expecting to see gameplay additions like jumping or going prone in long grass added to this, but smarter ai is what I'm hoping for.
As for the rest, we're in danger of making assumptions and getting outraged again.
We have no idea when this footage is from. It could be something, it could be nothing.
It's just that $69.99 price tag... I'm the last person that gets upset about the price increase this gen, but c'mon. This is a remaster of a remaster.
Them porting it from PS3 to PS4 made sense - no back compatibility, and it was budget priced. Another port (or remaster/remake) from PS4 to 5 doesn't make the same sense, as you can just
... play the PS4 version on PS5.
I always say if you don't like it, don't buy it. But this is just sort of egregious at this point (if the leaked footage is an accurate representation of the final product).
The reality is, people are misremembering Part 2's gameplay to be vastly different than Part 1, when actually it's not really noticeably different.
Eh, skipping this either way. I am one of the very few that did not like the original. Only thing that made the game 'good' imho was the start, and the ending, and then purelky storywise...the rest of the game and gameplay just did not click with me AT ALL.
I'm kind of surprised how many people seem surprised. If this isn't precisely what you were expecting, you had unrealistic expectations invented from whole cloth all along. Most of us already knew this. It's why we voted "cash grab" and endured the insults.
If the leak turns out to be untrue and not representative of the final product, it's us "cash grab" voters that will be very surprised.
https://youtu.be/rRJzAKtR1nE
I look forward to the 9/10 PS review 😜
I love The Last of Us, but if this rumor is true then I'm not going to be buying this until it's $20 or less, preferably just playing it when it comes to PS Extra.
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk This looks very nice. Everything looks like it's been tweaked or improved a little.
Out of curiosity, were we told there would be more than that?
Hopefully Sony gets anough backlash and cancelations over this cash grab that they reconsider the price. Aint now way this has to be 20€ more expensive than the original Game lol, it doesnt even have the Multiplayer
"I-It's not a cash grab, I swear! TLoU2 mechanics, great attention to detail, yadda yadda!"
@Gaia093 Who was that ND Dev who said that again? I need to check their Twitter lol
What saddens me about all these remakes, (and there are a lot of developers churning them out) is it's a sign that few people are willing to take the risk of giving us something new.
It's no surprise that big budget AAAA games like BGE2 are being pushed back.
And look at the farce around GTA6. They finally got around to putting resources, time and energy into it but only at the expense of Red Dead online.
It's been said before. Greed has taken over from creativity.
So many examples of this. FIFA, MW, Assassins Creed, etc.
It looked a lot like what I remember of TLoU, but I believe I noticed that Joel cocked the hammer on his pistol in that new vid and I believe that is a detail that wasn’t added until TLoU2. So, they may have done some work to the animation system.
Have to agree, ive been giving them the benefit of the doubt so far, they really need to release a pre-view video or a comparison video as these leaks will affect sales, and thats the bottom line here.
Wouldn't it make more sense for them to actively promote the game at this stage? Guurl, we're almost in August and they have yet to release any substantial information.
Call me a negative Nancy, but this smells like Cyberpunk 2077. By that, I mean it's a repackaged PS4 game with updated character models.
Naughty Dog needs some proper direction ASAP.
I think there are a lot of reasons to be excited for this, mainly playing the highest fidelity version of one of my favourite games. I’m not going to pretend like I haven’t spent $90 or more upgrading some of my favourite films over the years from VHS to DVD to Blu-Ray to 4K UHD…But I agree completely that the messaging around this remake should be crystal clear. No one likes to feel tricked, a lesson Naughty Dog should have well learned by now.
I didn't even register that the multiplayer wasn't present in this version. Charging more for less? Is this a first in a remaster/remake?
This naughty dog has flees ladies and gents.
@Enigk No, the Uncharted 1-3 remasters didn’t have the multiplayer either.
Asking more money for less content, no matter how graphically enhanced, on a game released 2-3 times by now is comically poor thinking.
Tbh don't really think we needed this remake in first place yeah the original gameplay and AI was poor but graphics wise was pretty good and it's strange that's what they are pushing. Again correct me if Im wrong but wasn't Sony bend and another out sourced studio working on this and naughty dog took that off there hands just seems this was very low priority to them.
We all have a choice and we don't have to buy it nobody is forcing you, yeah it's dissapointing because I think the expectations are always high for naughty dog but I'm far more excited for fractions and there next project.
@Milktastrophe The Last of Us 2 is vastly superior to the original The Last of Us in raw gameplay terms.
The Last of Us 2 is, in my opinion, the best TPS ever made.
I'd like to just throw out my last words here, because with the gameplay out, I think the convo is done now.
I am fully in favour of remasters. Without a doubt. I'd love more remasters. They are a great way to preserve a game, and it's relatively cheap. Plenty of PS360 games (and before) that could benefit from remasters.
I'm even fully in favour of remakes. There are thousands of titles from the 6th gen and before that could benefit from full remakes.
I'd even argue that in some cases, I could make an arguement for both a remaster and a remake of a game. If it's part of the same package, and the goal of the dev is preserve and revitalise a dead franchise, then that's ok.
But not like this. This is a remaster of a 7th gen game that has already recieved a remaster, and they are charging full price for it. Now either, this second remaster has spent a lot of time and money on this title, which could have been better spent on other titles that haven't already recieved one remaster, let alone two. Or this version has been cheaper and quicker to produce and the full price tag isn't warranted.
£70? What will prevent them from making more versions next generation and asking for fifty billion? One hundred billion?
Removed - trolling/baiting
Can we talk about the real issue here? The fact that Naughty Dog Studios has never made a game starring a dog. Feel like they are capitalizing on our love of dogs to GRAB OUR CASH.
The real outrage in my mind.
ND have been pretty leaky lately haven't they? There's also some footage from Factions before it was broken apart from Part 2 to make its own thing that surfaced a while back. I wonder what's going on?
Anyway the footage is about what I expected. It looks like TLOU1 again but prettier. I know ND and Sony don't want people to see this as a cash grab but it's getting pretty hard to dispute that claim at this point. Their best bet would be to show off the improvements (if there are any) in an official gameplay video. Maybe they added some clicker vs human combat sections or deleted levels are getting added back in. Something!
Or heck if this is really all there is to it then at least own it. Atlus is crazy for asking full price for P5R again on PS5 but at least they aren't trying to sugar coat it. They just straight up said they'd appreciate it if people buy it again!😄 I at least appreciate the honesty!
@jmac1686
For $70 you could buy a dog.
This was never gonna be day 1 for me anyway. I’ll wait till it’s either on PS+ extra or heavily discounted. I have enough games in my backlog anyway, I can’t justify spending £70 on a game I’ve played before.
@Shepherd_Tallon yeah if you read the game synopsis on the ps store it states a total overhaul of the original experience incorporating modernised gameplay mechanics. I thought they may of tweaked a few things but not a lot has changed gameplay wise to my eyes. Hopefully naughty dog will show us what the modernised gameplay actually is
How? How do you let this happen twice?!
Remember when this happened (the no gameplay footage) with the GTA remakes and what the result was? No doubt this is a more modern game so it won’t be as funky but there’s only one reason so close to its release there’s slim to no game footage. It’s not that good so they’re delaying it until release so they can get as many rubes as possible to preorder before they realise the fix is in
Coming soon for PS6, The Last of Us- More Nose Hair Edition. 'You can feel it itch through the controller'.
It was obvious when they announced it, this would be little more than a remaster, and a total waste of time and resources. The price is just beyond ridiculous
ND doesn't need to do a thing, you know why... because it's just a game, not a damn global crisis or something. Go change your undies you pack of drama queens.
@get2sammyb remakes and remasters are low quality quick and easy cash cows for the dev’s. When are people going to understand that and stop expecting actual quality. Advancement and quality comes from new games not repeating the same old 🤷🏻♂️
Putting this is it worth it or is this needed aside for now. I'm more concerned with these leaks in general, like I hope this don't become the norm with future releases. I would hate really important story plots spoiled in something like Ragnarok, TLoU3, GoT2, Spiderman2 or Wolverine. Nobody wins when leaks happen including gamers
Maybe just maybe this is a really old build. I just doubt it tho because in the leak I saw, they had VRR support which is relatively new
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk Clarity will be needed there for sure.
Based on what we've seen, "modern gameplay mechanics" may mean that they've improved what was already there rather than they added more to it.
This is honestly what I was expecting so I'm okay with it, but it seems like many were expecting more than that.
It's unfortunate that ND can't reveal these things on their own terms anymore though. They always have to respond to leaks it seems, and then they get hate for it.
Some of the gameplay does look smoother in that video you posted though. Joel's weight compared to Ellie comes across very well.
@IonMagi Technically, the dev who said it's not a cash grab was never a Naughty Dog employee. He worked on this remake as an animator at PS Visual Arts studio, a helper studio, and now works at Bend. So, technically, nobody at Naughty Dog has actually ever claimed it's not a cash grab....
Breaking news, the whole game has leaked. And you can buy it for 20 bucks. It's called the The Last Of Us PS4 remaster and it's backwards compatible on the PS5.
There's a naughty dog on the prowl,
Coming to your place to grab your cash.
Seventy dollars for one fresh dookie,
Time for some old fashioned gamer backlash.
I reckon Push Square is leaking these clips so they can put out more TLoU articles for the clicks.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@BlaBlaBla I'm surprised no one jumped on you for that. Not saying I don't agree, though. The Last of Us just didn't grab me at all, I tried playing it all the way back in the PS3 days and it bored me silly - generic zombie game to me.
It’s not ideal but we shouldn’t take all this online stuff too serious.
They will definitely present the game sometime, probably within a larger Sony showcase, some cross promotion with the upcoming tv series… we will see.
It’s not that the game is now „destroyed“ because of some leaks in social media.
I know I'll probably regret this but I'll give them a benefit of a doubt and just wait until we get a proper gameplay reveal.
Fuzzymonkeyfunk wrote:
It's not going to happen, that was always clear from the first footage. If they were to import the moveset of TLOU2 into Part 1 then all the level layouts need to be adjusted to match the new moves. Tall grass to hide in, cars you can crawl under etc. It's the moveset that dictates the level layout. As soon as they showed some stills of the remade levels it was clear that this wasn't going to change massively as they were exactly the same.
There will be a few smaller quality of life improvements but little more.
This looks like more than a remaster, but it doesn't look like a remake to me. At this time, I would say it is closer to a remaster than a remake. I will for sure buy it someday. But at half the current asking price, which is what I think it's worth.
@TheCollector316 That's misunderstanding what a remaster and a remake are.
If they remade the game from scratch in a new engine, even if they change nothing else and it plays exactly the same, then it's a remake.
If they take the old game and update some assets, new textures, updated sounds, etc. but it's running on the original game engine then it's a remaster.
EDIT: Then there's the complex ones that are a bit of both. Demon's Souls (PS5) runs on the original engine like a remaster, but they also run it alongside their own custom engine. It's a hybrid. But they went above and beyond.
It looks as expected tbh. Which is a shame and why a lot of us are saying this is unnecessary and too expensive for what it is.
@get2sammyb @Shepherd_Tallon lol OK. We all know that's not the reason. They did it because the leaks blew the plot wide open and they was trying to pretend what happened in the first 30 minutes didn't happen. You can call it misdirection if you want, i call it lying. That alone means they can't be trusted.
@get2sammyb so far I've not seen one environment that has been redesigned for gameplay purposes, I was sceptical when they only showed cutscenes which themselves are identical. Don't get me wrong it's obviously a lot prettier and of that's all you want then great. I personally need something more from a remake that's already available on the platform.
No matter what people's opinion of the game are it has to be concerning how much and easily it seems we get leaks of Naughty Dog games recently
They should have given this to Bluepoint - their remasters/remakes are always top notch. That would have allowed ND to focus on their (hopefully) new IP. If they’re only working on this and TLoU 2 MP then what the hell happened to ND? They went from being the leaders of the pack in the PS3 era to straggling way (WAY) at the back in the last few years.
I don't care if they rebuilt the game from the ground up, that isn't rewriting the story, rewriting all the scripts and re-doing all the voice work, composing and recording all the music, visiting all the areas, taking photos, creating 'concept' art etc, creating all those characters etc etc...
You have a 'template' of all of that with the 'original' and combined with 'new' assets created for Last of Us 2 to fill in more 'detail' in the world, you have the 'bulk' of the game done before you even start to 'remake' a game.
This is more expensive than the first game that had to try and create the game from scratch and that also had an Online mode as well. So not only are we getting the 'same' game, albeit with some more modern visuals etc, we are getting 'less' content and being charged a LOT more too...
Like I said, it doesn't matter if they were rebuilding the game from scratch, there are a LOT of things that are not needed this time around and have a 'template' to follow too. The Story won't change and the same 'story' beats will still be hit. You know what's going to happen to Joel, his daughter, Ellie and everyone they meet on their journey. On top of that, they are 'not' remastering the Online component - as they are going to sell an updated LoU based 'Online' mode separately...
AA price for a complete 'Remake' wouldn't be too bad - even if that does make it as expensive as the Original at release. Indie price seems about 'fair' for 'half' the package remastered - if you must charge or even a $10/£10 extra charge for PS4 LoU Remastered owners which would be 'keeping' with Sony's own policy regarding PS5 'upgrades' of PS4 era games.
Therefore, it doesn't matter what Sony or Naughty Dog claim about this, there is NO WAY that they can justify charging a 'premium' price for any Remake/remaster and especially not a 'remake/remaster' of 'half' the original content too...
I hope they step up soon, Sony might take this old dog out back behind the woodshed.
@LiamCroft But that was three games and came in at a price less than the originals. This is charging more for less. Usually remakes are the definitive edition with all the bells and whistles. Sometimes they drop the multiplayer but a lower price point and complete single player experience compensate for that. The PS4 version had DLC included and was cheaper than the original at launch after a fairly late price reduction before release I believe. If Sony can persuade people to spend money on a less complete version than they can most likely already play without paying any extra then we will get more of this from them.
Well this isn’t good.
The only reason I was considering this remake was that I was under the impression it would integrate the advanced movement options, gunplay, and AI of TLOU2, which were the three highpoints of that otherwise extremely divisive sequel.
If it has none of that, than this is pointless. Because I did four runs back to back of the PS4 version back in 2014.
There is no way we can defend this now if the leak is the final build. The gameplay is nowhere near as good as TLOU2, the animations are not as good, enemy AI seems soooo far from part II (seriously one of the dudes covers behind a car with half his body showing).
This, for 70 euros, is a complete joke.
@get2sammyb Not at first you burned it to the ground how many articles where there telling us is Returnal worth full price.
What if the leaker is just leaking tlou remastered ps4 edition videos/pics, claiming it to be the ps5 remake, just to stir the masses into a tizzy? Or maybe this is indicative of the final product. Either way, calm your taint.
I'm a Naughty Dog and The Last of Us fan, but I'm starting to think that I should pull the plug on my pre-order.
I'm getting a bit sick and tired of companies expecting people to buy their products through name and reputation, and I think that these game leakers feel the same way.
Whatever happened to selling a product? Showing the consumer exactly what they are buying. Here's a demonstration...
Can we please see exactly what we will be buying, Naughty Dog, for the same price as a brand new game...
At the moment, following the leaks and their silence, I think they're taking the piss.
@GreatAuk 2014 Last of Us remastered was 60 on release and released barely a year after the 2013 PS3 original with much less work done to it compared to this 2022 PS5 version. Yh it maybe less than 20 now but on release it was not. Not defending any of these price tags by the way just making a point that the 60 remastered PS4 version is fine but now all of a sudden the 70 PS5 version is not
@NickGerr1986 that’s the thing, TLoU2 should have been huge but instead they split the fanbase down the middle and left half of us feeling bitterly disappointed.
What should have been an incredible and celebrated return of one of the most beloved games ever, turned out to be an unnecessarily divisive sequel, mired in controversy, and removed any desire to see the story continued for many.
ND have been on a downward spiral for a while now and most of the amazingly talented people who worked there in the golden years are long gone.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
@Gloamin And maybe its dissapointing but its so useless kicking a game down when its not even fully shown yet.
@carlos82 You definitely won't see redesigned environments. The gameplay will be the same as the first game, just tighter and more polished by modern standards.
The leaks are very frustrating though, definitely. Especially given how significant the one a few years ago was.
@Beerheadgamer82 To be fair, it makes sense to charge 60 for a game you remastered that was only out for 12 months for a brand new system.
Many games still sell for almost full asking price a year later and they're not even remastered.
This game has been out for 9 years now.
@Texan_Survivor I don't think they were deceiving people with any of the trailers for TLoU 2. They were trying to preserve the plot. Other games have done the same thing with trailers, and movies do it all the time too. The character you are talking about, may not have been playable in the game, but still had a huge prescence. The whole plot revolved around his actions. Everything that happens in the sequel, were set in motion by him.
For profit corporation being evasive and dodgey for cash? Sounds about right.
@Belatarr I was worried about this too but given the amount of ‘effort’ they’ve put into the Remake/Remaster (whatever it is? A Remakester?), I really don’t think we have to worry about any major story changes haha
Actually, I think ND may have confirmed that there are no story changes? But they also said this remakester was rebuilt from the ground up with completely overhauled gameplay so who knows 🤷♂️🤣
nothing wrong with game play.playability is perfect.
dont change a thing i bought this on the ps3 then ps4 no issues i will buy on ps5, graphics overhaul welcomed. going clicker hunting!
Even if there were gameplay tweaks, I still argue £70 is a joke. Yes I'm sure a lot of work is being put in, but the script, voice acting, motion capture, area design and music among many other things that take a lot of time and money are already done.
This leak has put me on the fence and I hate being on the fence. Adore part 1 so much and I don't ever need an excuse not to jump on a newer version of this but this leak tho isn't very promising right now. Just have to wait and see if more of it gets revealed officially before coming off the fence. I dunno lol
@spcspc carefull my friend, I stated similar thoughts but the comment was removed.
Like you, I would expect the site to have some certainty about what they are looking at before jumping to conclussions, even if i dont expect it from the punters. Im also at a loss as to what is unconstructive about that expectation.
I think what I can agree with is that having had these leaks and the various conversations that have followed, ND will need to comment or release some official footage to add some clarity to the debate. I hope they do so soon, so that the debate can continue with some certainty.
Only serving to remind me I remember that game. Like it wor yesterday don’t need it; get lost some already. Only then might I rediscover
@GreatAuk I'd have to disagree because if the original Last of Us was released these days on PS4 in 2021(2013) and then Last of Us remastered version released in 2022(2014) on PS5 everyone would be saying it should be free or a 10 upgrade. I dunno lol it seems fine 9 years ago to buy a cash grab but it's not OK today
I'll wait for it to go on Ps Plus Extra to replay it.
This is a remake of a game that isnt 10 years old and still plays fine on PS3 and even better on the PS4 remaster.
Paying £70 for updated visuals and according to this article, the same gameplay doesn't make sense
Christ knows whats what. This could be an early build.. but we have seen this time and time again, developers not showing much gameplay as they know it's not a huge improvement. GTA is a prime example.
To steep for me because owning 2 versions already but even though the game is worth it when never played before, not tweaking gameplay elements in a remake is not a good sign, if true oc.
That said, a poll Spawn Wave made said only like 25% wanted to see gameplay tweaks & the rest was fine with just a visual upgrade.
@Titntin completely agree!
But we also know Sammy tends to be extremely critical - borderline "entitlement behavior"- towards many of PS initiatives, projects, games, etc. He made such a huge deal of the new PS+ system and turns out to be quite good. Or about Sony increasing live services investment by 50%, almost proclaiming it was meant to be the end of solo / offline games. And like those examples, many more in the recent past.
Not saying not to be critical, but to frame those critics around certainties and solid facts.
ND and Sony can spend what they want on updating the visuals. Whether or not it's good value to me is up to me alone. And £70 to play a game that I've already played, with no new story beats and (now) apparently no new gameplay, and with the multiplayer stripped out, albeit looking a bit shinier, when I could go play the PS4 version which still looks stunning to this day... I personally don't see the point in this remake existing at all.
This remake must be for people who haven't played Part 1 yet and want to jump in on the best version available, or diehard fans, only. Personally, I may purchase on sale but I'm thinking I would pay no more than ~£20 for some updated visuals. That's not a dig at what I'm sure was a huge amount of work, (I have no reason to doubt what they say at any rate), it's to the credit of the original release and how good it already looked.
I am surprised that anyone is surprised about this.
“It’s just a cash grab”
Actually it’s the most meticulously built and crafted project that I have ever seen or been a part of in my entire career. The highest level of care and attention to detail possible.
For the love of God, we will see what it is when the reviews come.
I understand the emotional reaction of this article, especially after Push has been towing the line of defending the "remake".
Sony built a level of absolute trust during the PS4 and it's just been kind of hard to see it be weaponized against us during the Jim Ryan/Hermen Hulst era
@UnlimitedSevens Wasn't Crash of the canine family?
Thank you for reporting on this. After watching some leaks I decided to wait for a deep discount.
This is just....it's a straight up lie from ND. Par for the course now, I guess.
@spcspc Agreed specially when it comes to "Leaks" I don't know why anyone jumps on the bandwagon anyway except to make clickbait.
This TLOU1 remake appears to be a remaster of the PS4 version, which was a remaster of the original PS3 game, if the gameplay leak is true. This is a far cry from the FF7, Mafia 1, and RE2/3 remakes. I thought the remake would be TLOU2 quality but It almost look exactly as the PS4 version with minor visual upgrade. (in-game wise)
It'll be interesting come the 2nd Sept whether or not it'll be worth 70 quid ,reviews I would have thought beforehand will say quite abit about any changes and if so ,will they be enough to warrant another outlay on a great remaster on the ps4 ,I would have thought that surely the mechanics etc would have to be redone and not just graphically better to make the price in most gamers eyes worth another buy ,I'll be quite shocked if there's no changes apart from graphics ,not long to find out ,I myself will sit on the fence and get splinters lol,to wait for reviews to drop before deciding whether to buy quite quickly after the 2nd or wait nearer Xmas, here's hoping this will be a great remake though
I am optimistic that lou1 ps5 turns out brilliant but also have a nagging doubt in my mind after this reveal
When you move the level from "Medium" to "High" on PC (and check the Raytracing box) it is a $69 upgrade on Console.
3 years from now they will sell you the "Ultra" level and FSR-2.0 on PS5 PRO
A remake of the first Uncharted would not only be welcomed, but the price tag would be way more justified. I’m just starting to think ND is creatively and morally bankrupt. Sony needs to step in before all goodwill is gone with this studio.
If that’s really final footage they will either cancel release or release it on PS Plus Extra to avoid total embarrassment.
@starbuck2212 Jeez. That's not lying. What did you expect? To implicitly reveal his fate from the trailers alone or to show trailers that only go up to the point that he's still part of the game?

i guarantee you we won't see reviews for this prior to release. lmfao. I do think if we REALLY get honest with ourselves here. Naughty Dog has literally released the same game over and over again since the first Uncharted. TLOU1 was absolutely just a reskin of whatever uncharted was current at the time, with a different tone and story. They have done nothing but mediocre 3rd person games as far as combat, and instead dumped all of their money into the narrative side which has resulted in greatness on that front. They are like playing movies.
About a year ago I sporadically played through the Nathan drake collection, 4, and then TLOU and TLOU2 and I was very burnt out about halfway through that because it became clear that it was literally all the same shell I was playing.
So, for ND who have essentially been using that same shell for so long, to again repackage and resell these titles for the prices they are asking, is just embarrassing for them. Even more so it's shameful to see these Sony devoted websites literally defend and market their games for them as they stay silent until the evidence grows that the release is everything the non fanhumans are concerned it may be.
@itsfoz No chance of a cancelled release. Given the "deluxe" edition sold out in seconds and preorders are probably high from the marketing machine and people that don't know this controversy exists at all, they're going to make investors happy in its reports, even if it shatters goodwill to the brand. If the blowback hits hard enough they could drop the price or release on Extra in time for launch though.
@Beerheadgamer82 There was some controversy around the PS4 remaster as well, but timeline and context matter. At the time the original PS3 game was only a year old (still new), and a majority of PS4 owners at the time did not own a PS3, so had no way to play what was clearly Sony's most marketable game at the time. They weren't really selling an "upgrade" to PS3 owners, they were selling TLOU to PS4 owners, the majority of which were new to Playstation, that had no way to play it otherwise, while it was still a new smash hit. And it also was mostly superfluous to PS3 owners. This time that game is still playable on the new hardware (and is included with subscriptions...), and most PS5 owners are already PS4 owners. Selling a newly released hit franchise to new customers on a new console that can't run the previously sold version at the same price being received differently than selling an old game to existing customers at a higher price on a console that can already run the game in an era where improvements as part of the ongoing support to the product are normal shouldn't really be eyebrow raising.
@themightyant That's not a "remake", that's an engine migration, though, and whatever work is associated with doing so, along with some additions along the way. But merely migrating the game's engine and the associated work to bring what was in one engine to an new one, even if it involves updated assets doesn't constitute remaking the whole game. As @BAMozzy pointed out, they're not rerecording the Foley, VA, the music, mocap, reworking level designs and gameplay mechanics to modernize outdated tropes, etc, etc. It's an engine migration/remaster with some flourish and a heaping load of spin.
DQXI:S is arguably more of a genuine remake of it's 2 year old predecessor than this. It was an engine migration, with replacement models and textures (lower quality, ironically, but new), new voice work (for Japan), expanded and re-recorded soundtrack, additional quests, content, adjusted UI/QoL/gameplay features, adjusted battle pacing, etc. And re-selling that as a new game, even at a discount this game doesn't have, to PS owners that bought the half-finished original was also egregious.
@JJ2 Sony should buy WestStar.
@JJ2 We wont buy it, but that doesnt mean we dont have the right to voice our concerns.
As far as negativity toward the developer? Is criticism not warranted if you over promise and under deliver and charge full PS5 game retail price for it. Call it what it is, a graphical update and release it for 30 bucks with and upgrade path or less and there would be no outcry. PERIOD.
Definitely a cash grab. Naughty Dog has gone downhill since Neil Druckman took over
@NEStalgia An engine migration would suggest to me that you are bringing most of the art assets across. From what I understand that isn't the case and they have all been recreated from scratch. Regardless it's a semantically grey area.
What it definitely isn't: a remaster.
What it definitely is: a waste of time.
@get2sammyb From another website (I swear it was just this once and it meant nothing! ) and I thought it might be worth relaying:
"If you’re looking at the footage and you think it looks washed out, well that’s because it does – but that’s not an issue with the game. Baker* credits the issue with his source’s capture setup, so it isn’t how the game will actually look."
*Nick Baker of XboxEra
Richie rich has dollar, Sony has Noughty Dog
@themightyant Grey is right. What assets exactly they completely created anew, brought over as-is, brought over from TLOU2 as-is, or used automated conversion tools to bring over/enhance procedurally we'll never know. It's hard to imagine they'd create all new assets across the board for a 1:1 game update. Then again, modders do it on PC for free.
Where were are so far with this gen feels like we should ditch "remake, remaster, director's cut" verbiage and just go where the sudios seem to want to go: TLOU v2.51
@pharos_haven
Well you see I have a theory about this. Crash was a Bandicoot who ate hundreds of fruit in rapid succession. And based on my own research, my dog will not eat fruit. However my cat will.
Therefore, Crash Bandicoot is a cat.
Ya cry too much about things in here you either buy it or don't buy it if you played it before it might not be for you.

None of the stuff in this article matters, as Push■ will give this 9 or 10 out of 10. As always....
Bad dog!
I knew it would just be a remaster of a remaster. Its a cash grab pure and simple and they know that hence the lack of gameplay shown from them. $70 for a remaster of a $60 remaster, Sony really are going downhill. Skyrim may have got a PS5 version but its free if you own it on PS4 and the PS5 version i believe is under 50 quid if you don't own it and comes with all the creation club content.
Just a game. Wouldn't worry about it.
In the PC world this effort would be called a fan mod at best, I'm just hoping and waiting for the day ND finally moves on to something new.
@naruball come on dude, they had more than enough footage to make a trailer without resorting to character switching.
@JSnow2 I agree. I kind of feel bad for the next CEO who has to clean up Jim's mess.
Edit: that's assuming they even care.
@UnlimitedSevens haha fair enough
@WallyWest Even Grand Theft Auto V remaster is a way better deal...and that's Rockstar we're talking about.
70 for a remaster of a remaster of a 2013 game is ridiculous.
Absolute cash grab
Not buying whatsoever
Hard pass for me, bring on callisto protocol
@NEStalgia With all due respect, we were told by Sony and Naughty Dog that this was not a cash grab, about how much work they put into this, and how the gameplay was going to be modernized. That obviously would give you the impression that this would be The Last of Us Part II's gameplay with the great story from Part 1. Or at least something close to that. We were trusting the companies telling us this stuff, not making assumptions based on nothing.
Honestly, if this does really turn out to be a remaster of a remaster and at $70 to boot, this might finally be the catastrophe they need to get their heads out of their asses and get back on track again. I love my PS5 and I'm a big fan, but this would be really damaging if they flat out lied about this and decided to charge $70 on top of that. It'd be much easier to shrug it off if they just came out and said it was another remaster. I wouldn't have, but people still would have bought it.
We'll see what happens. Like others have said, they really need to show the game off themselves at this point. Otherwise the ***** is just going to keep building. They can't keep the lazy approach to things all the time, especially when things are going off the rails with this thanks to all the leaks.
@BeerIsAwesome games age you know .
I thought we unanimously agreed this "remake" was unnecessary
Take a shot every time you see “eye-watering” in a pushsquare article XD but yeah $70 no thanks. PlayStation’s been an odd duck lately, spending just as much time talking about their PC ports as they are their new (???) PS5 games. Looking pretty sparse the rest of this year
@Fenbops But unless they mess it up, 9/10 should be a low-end review for this. The PS3 version was a great game, the PS4 remaster was a great game, and if judged solely on how it plays, I expect this to get at least 9/10 everywhere, with maybe even some 10/10.
I don't think anybody has said this game will be bad. We've said it doesn't appeal to us because it feels like a minor upgrade priced as a new major release.
If anybody gives it less than 9/10 I assume it will only be because of the value given the price and the availability of the PS4 version for much, much less.
Still stand by my original statement same game with slightly better graphics - cash grab . There not alone a lot of games companies are releasing sloppy remasters with slight graphical tweaks . For example mafia 1 remake . Same outdated gameplay but updated to 4k like using crayons on an oil painting . Also persona 5 remaster - again slightly upgraded graphics, possibly Ray tracing but the game is fairly new so don't believe it's needed and its not free upgrade to those that own it. I'm being very selective about what games I buy these days considering most cost 70 quid although I tend to get them for roughly 55 on shop to unless I get dlc example soul hackers 2 with full dlc cost 80 quid on ps store as no delux/ special edition available in physical form

When Will I Go Prone
@KilloWertz Yeah, they said they "modernized" the gameplay, and while I'm not defending ND, at all, as they dig their grave with a front loader, they never said they were reimagining the gameplay into a whole new game design, people just kind of assumed that (because you'd like to think a $70 remaster would do something like that, of course.). They showed stills of the levels showing they didn't resign them for stealth tactical gameplay.... So we really knew what we needed from the reveal. I think most people did know anyway which is why it's been a total cluster from the start.
Unfortunately this won't be what pushes them to straighten up. Instead it'll probably show a tidy profit and they'll learn that doing this is a successful strategy for money from the masses that aren't privy to this poop storm. And they'll ramp up efforts to do it more regularly with more games. I'm expecting a new type of "greatest hits" brand to pop up around "remakes" if it sells well. And it probably will. It's like Disney Vault "remasters".
If you ask me they're really beating a dead Joel with this unneeded remake.
@nathanSF
That's why I'm playing more indie games these days. There's nothing innovative but most are new IPs, and the ones that aren't (Streets of Rage, TMNT) are at the very least new entries in a series and are well made and fairly priced.
