Sabotage Studio, the team behind the upcoming RPG Sea of Stars, has announced it's in development for PS5 and PS4. Arriving sometime next year, the game is a retro-inspired, turn-based RPG with old-school flavour and some modern touches to smooth things out.
In addition to the above new trailer, a detailed breakdown of the game is up on the PS Blog. Some key things to take away: this is purely turn-based with no ATB-style time bars to manage; there are no random encounters and thus no need for grinding; and there are six playable characters who specialise in different areas.
Combat also incorporates timed hits, essentially meaning you'll deal more damage if you time your strike properly. Oh, and you can hotswap any party member into a battle at any time, so you don't need to sweat who to bring into combat, which is nice.
It's all shaping up pretty well from where we're sitting, and with contributions to the soundtrack from Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Cross and Trigger fame, this will definitely appeal to a certain group. Are you interested in Sea of Stars? Let us know in the comments section below.

As a massive old school JRPG fanboy this looks absolutely fantastic. Can't wait to give it a go.
Looks good. Told you it was coming to PS4/PS5 unfortunately not physical unless you backed it but maybe they will do another Limited run
This looks incredible!
Reminds me of the visuals of the original Suikoden that enchanted me on ps1 & yet combine them with some of the spectacular mega boss battles of FF7 like Ruby,Emerald Weapons etc.,where you'd think how the fudge am I supposed to beat,THAT?!
Let's hope the gameplay matches the gorgeous looking visuals!🤞👍
Normally not really my cup of tea but I loved The Messenger so I’m down to give this a shot.
This looks fantastic, I’ll definitely be giving it a go. I couldn’t help but smile at the charm of it, especially when the sprites were in the water and spinning as they went down the river. Games don’t seem to have that charm nearly as much these days.
Yeah... have it on my Steam Wish list.
PS is getting RPGs in every shape and size... something for everyone
I'm unreasonably hyped for this.
damn, this game looks amazing! when mitsuda's name is thrown out there you take notice! the messenger was a genuinely great game so my expectations are pretty high on this one.
Looks great. No random encounters/grinding is a little worrying though. RPGs with limited exp like that are often very easy as there's not a way to challenge yourself by being under leveled.
"no random encounters"
I'm currently watching my kid play FFX HD, I played the original at release but remember very little, and as great as it is, after the slow first 8-10 hours, random encounters man, I don't know how I played any JRPG back then, so annoying.
I doubt this will be day 1 but it does look adorable.
Excellent, loved The Messenger and would love to play another game from that developer, especially as this one is set in the same universe as The Messenger with it being a prequel.
Looks cool, will keep an eye on it! Do love a classic rpg!
This looks great. I'm gonna have to check out The Messenger now.
OMG this looks amazing!!! cant wait!
@PlatinumGamer you can still preorder it. I assume you get to pick you console at a later date.
