The Netflix series based on Horizon Zero Dawn will feature everyone's favourite flame-haired heroine after all, it has been confirmed. We also learned that the showrunner of The Umbrella Academy, Steve Blackman, has been tapped to head up the project, which will also include some production crew that have worked on The Boys and The Expanse previously.
We knew that Horizon 2074 would be set across multiple timelines, but this is the first we have heard of Aloy's inclusion. The news comes from a recent interview Blackman gave regarding the conclusion of the Umbrella Academy when the topic turned to his next project, based on Horizon Zero Dawn:
Horizon Zero Dawn is an exceptionally well-crafted game with wonderful characters not often seen in the rank-and-file of the gaming world. Their salvation comes in the form of a young female warrior named Aloy, who has no idea she’s the key to saving the world.
Suffice it to say, yes, Aloy will be a main character in our story. My writing partner on this, Michelle Lovretta, and I are thrilled to be able to expand this remarkable IP into a series for all types of viewers.
The project is still in the very early days of its production, and we don't have any word of any casting or a release date yet. We have said it before and will say it again, get Lance Reddick on board, or we riot.
What do you think of Aloy's inclusion, would you have preferred a completely original story set in the Horizon universe? Begin the hunt in the comments section below.

I Hope This Would Be Animated That Way They Can Simply Get The Voice Actors From The Games To Reprise Their Roles But We Already know that They Are Going To Try And Make This Live Action I Hope I'm Wrong But We Will See.
This could actually be amazing.
Obviously Horizon Zero Dawn has a lot of beauty and wonder and action and drama, but I also hope they can capture some of that unique feeling of loss and mystery that surrounded the ‘Old World’ that the game provided.
When playing the game I got a load of vibes of Planet of the Apes (the TV series) which I watched as a kid and stories like that where they find things from the ‘old world’ and to them it’s a mystery and to the viewer it is our world which is now lost to them and it really piqued my enjoyment of the game.
So I hope they can capture that feeing of aloneness and discovering what was lost on top of all the other elements that make the games so amazing.
The good news here is that The Umbrella Academy is very good IMO
I expect too much talking.
@Areus
Why are all the first letters caps?
Its Netflix so i won't bother as it won't get renewed and will most likely be rubbish anyway.
The first game was excellent. The second game was …
@Icey664 Its Some Weird Thing My Phone Does When I'm Typing Something.
Go all out insane budget, Netflix! Win back those subscribers!
First, the CGI will need to be on point for this show to work anyway, and second, Sigourney Weaver has to be cast as Elisabet Sobeck!
I have spoken
I don't know how I feel about this yet, Netflix are losing millions and their budget for shows/movies has been lower lately so if rather this go to someone else.
And I feel a live action movie might be bad move and instead make it fully cgi like the final fantasy films
In other news… water is wet. Tune in next week for an update from the ministry of obvious.
@Icey664 And How Long Did It Take ?
“ Bet you didn't see that one coming”
holy ***** , that tagline and aloy just made me realize brigette from overwatch was inspired by aloy . she says that same tagline .
@UltimateOtaku91 There not really anybody else... You go Hulu, you have to play ball with Disney. You go Prime, you have to play ball with Amazon. I guess you can do HBO... But Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc is too busy at the moment making everyone and their mom hate them.
Whenever I hear the name Steve Blackman all I can think about is kendo sticks
@GagaOooLaLa Excellent too.
@Ravix A young Sigourney Weaver may have worked.
@Sqush-Pare I think she can still play a good few years under her age, and there's no reason Elisebet Sobeck can't be fairly mature in the story anyway.
And for Aloy, I'm guessing she will be 17/20 in this, as well as probably having flashbacks for her at 6-10 as well. So 3 actors would be required anyway.
I'm sticking by it
can we have more orange elsewhere, i like it
A lot of live adaptions of games tend to fail to replicate the atmosphere that the video game player experiences. I think animation style movies more easily replicate that atmosphere. I feel that is what is what made Arcane such a good video game adaption.
@Areus I doubt Netflix with its current crisis will be able to afford the CGi and SFX for a live action, It'll be pretty budget if it does go live. Maybe based in some weird, 'safe haven' with barely any mechs. Animated sounds more feasible
Can’t wait to see people lose their effing minds over casting on this one. You KNOW it’s coming. There’s gamers and a female involved.
I wonder if they'll cast a white man for the role of Varl?
Sadie Sink for Aloy?
@Ravix it's cool, I've always liked Sigourney Weaver anyway.
@get2sammyb Too soft for Aloy, Chris Pratt would be better.
A certain to be CGI nightmare with the writer of Lost Girl and Sorority Wars in charge of story... sign me up!
Florence Pugh would be perfect for Aloy but I think she'd be too in demand.
Video game shows should be made using the in-game engine. Solve the constant battle with live action feasibility and give the fans the characters and world they recognize.
As a kid I've always wanted a Metal Gear movie, but thinking about the logistics of making it all live action half CGI makes me change my mind. Give me video game movies that look like the video games. Would've preferred in game uncharted movie to the live action.
Happy to hear that this show is in good hands then, looking forward to the final product.
@Mylo @Voltan You'll both be happy to hear that Netflix renewed Umbrella Academy for Season 4 then!
No release date or trailer yet, we'll probably be waiting a year or two at least.
@KidBoruto I did see the news. It's also going to be the final one, which seems about right tbh.
And Hannah Hoekstra as Aloy! Perfect for me 👍🏻
I mentioned this before, but if the show were to have an entirely original story then it may as well just become its own original franchise. If it relies on the story of the game, you may as well just play the game. It's why I can't see these adaptations as anything other than lazy cash grabs that rely on brand recognition for success.
@jrt87 There was only one live action adaptation that I can recall off the top of my head that I thoroughly enjoyed, and it was the Silent Hill movie (the first one, not that other one). Resident Evil's first few installments were also dumb fun, if you can get past how ridiculous it all is.
I think they are going overboard on the games to movie genre
How to raise and kill hype in one headline.
@Voltan I got up to episode 5 before I dropped off. I dunno it just wasn’t really going anywhere that was really clicking for me.
Interesting the kind of alumni that they’ve picked for this. In The Expanse’s case I’ve been only just been making my way through the first book of the source material.
Wonder how woke this is going to be and wonder if Aloy will turn lesbian.
Right that's cool. But Netflix is involved so yeah...
@solocapers Heh I still remember the noise those things made when they connected with someone.
Sony gonna go all Star Wars on us. Let sleeping dogs lie...
@Voltan Does it seem like the series doesn't have much story left to tell? I haven't started to watch it yet, waiting for the final season.
@Mylo Yes it sure does seem to be of great quality, from what fans have told me. I'll get around to watching eventually.
@KidBoruto I'm not familiar with the comics so I don't know how closely it follows them and how much is left there but each season is its own arc so I'm sure they could keep it going for a while if they needed to.
However, season 3 already felt like it was losing steam a bit (don't get me wrong, it's still good, just not as good as the other 2) so it's probably smart to focus on delivering a worthy finale.
@Snick27 hopefully it'll continue to be aware of societal issues, as is the role of media.
Aloy always seemed ace panromantic to me.
Having some of the team come from The Boys and especially The Expanse gives me a lot of hope.
I expect it to be about the same quality as the Resident Evil series, and to last just as much.
Not trust in Netflix at all to handle a series like this.
@Voltan Understood! I might start watching the Umbrella Academy today if I find the time.
