Microsoft and Nintendo have both stated they won't be increasing the price of their respective consoles in the wake of Sony's decision to raise the cost of a PS5 in many major territories. It means Sony is the only platformer holder deciding to do so — the price increases were effective immediately — citing "high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries".
In a statement to Eurogamer, Nintendo said it "has no plans to increase the trade price of its hardware". The statement then cites a quote from president Shuntaro Furukawa made back in June when he said "we currently do not have any plans to change the price of our hardware due to inflation or increased procurement costs in each country".
This follows a Microsoft statement made yesterday which said the "Xbox Series S suggested retail price remains from £249.99 and the Xbox Series X is from £449.99".
Of course, that's not to say the situation won't change in the future. Sony itself provided a "no comment" response when it was asked about a PS5 price increase last month. "About a potential price increase for the PS5, at this point in time there is nothing specific I can share with you about prices," Hiroki Totoki said during a quarterly earnings call.
Regions such as the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan, China, and Canada have all seen the price of a PS5 system increase, but the USA wasn't subject to the hike. This is because of currency variations and tax exclusions.

Playstation/Sony getting ready for one more day of work: 🤡
But seriously, they are slowly but surely becoming the villain.
Well i wouldbe suprised if nintendo increased their price considering its running on old hardware. But still not a good look on sony.
Woohoo! Go, Sony!
(/s)
This seems to ignore that Nintendo already raised the price via their OLED model.
@AFCC it's always the British guy who makes the best villain
This is just hilarious, man. Absolutely hilarious.
It's definitely a bad look, although "no plans" obviously doesn't exclude it never happening.
Sony shooting themselves in the foot, cost may well have gone up and they may well think they can be arrogant as every PS5 that goes out is sold in no time but this is terrible optics.
Nintendo will never increase the price of the Switch as it is making them so much money (take note Sony) and Microsoft would happily take a hit on profits to one up Sony in the press. Sony making it easy for the competition to get positive news - fools I tell ya!!
Who cares Sony and the PS5 in great form game wise at the minute.
Let’s pay and play the best games on the market right now. Nearly GOWR time.
@zupertramp Yeah, Nintendo's done a good job of keeping the price static despite the system now being five years old. They should be getting pretty good margins on the hardware at this point.
Again, though, still a really bad look for Sony.
@TeapotBuddha I'm one of them mate, don't worry about it!
Getting old now Push Square, five stories about the price rise?
As much as I disagree with it, you do seem to be 'poking the pig' to get more outrage in new comments sections.
Let’s not forget if it was not for Sony this new generation would be absolutely rubbish AAA game wise.
Family wise Sackboy and Rachet and Clank and Miles Morales get played.
HFW and Returnal and Ghost of T expansion for me and GOWR to look forward to this November.
Since November 2022 the other two have released almost sod all AAA games.
I would rather pay £480 and £70 a game for AAA new games and enjoy those experiences.
Bad look for Sony, but I doubt they care anymore at this rate. Still love the games their studios are making, but PlayStation is starting to lose its grip and as someone who has grown up with it, it's really sad to see it.
One has mega deep pockets and the other one is already selling their console overpriced and not at a loss like playstation are.
@Dezzy70 That's the exact mentality that allows companies to slowly turn the screws on its customers.
Execs lick their chops and rub their hands together at that kind of thinking.
Great form or not, the consumer is getting the shaft and the board members get richer.
@zupertramp u can still get the OG Switch and also at least I get something for the $50. Sony should at least offer wit a free game or three months of PS Plus
@get2sammyb But I recall a lot of folks being shocked and appalled at Nintendo's decision to not just set their barely refreshed handheld at the original Switch's price point. Everyone's clearly over it now and acting like Sony's the first company to want to make buckets of money.
I don't like corporations and I'm not here to white knight for them but the response to all this has been a tad unhinged imo.
@Futureshark It's new news, so of course it's going to be covered.
@GamingFan4Lyf
So are all the oil and petrol companies
So are all the gas and electric companies
So are the food industry
Record profits and we all get shafted far more than what Sony are doing.
Give me the slight price increase and Sony top AAA games any day, whilst over the last two years the other two have done hardly anything big AAA game wise.
I would hardly anything to play new big AAA game wise if it was not for Sony since November 2020.
@rockodoodle I hear ya, there was just no reason to charge more for a console of that age for some slight improvements. Like the PS4 launched at $399 and so did the Pro.
People already pay $700+ to scalpers. Who do you think is going to pay for this next batch of PS5s? Scalpers. Sony will get their money and brag about selling out again. Seems to be the sales model for all new systems to the point I'm not even excited about the prospect of a next generation console being released. Especially if it will be near impossible to get one.
Don’t forget what Xbox wanted to do in the Xbox one days. Sony did not back down and went their way which got a trillion dollar company Microsoft to reverse and change their ways.
Perhaps we should do what Microsoft wanted to do back then.
I don't see Nintendo raising the Switch's initial price, but I can definitely see Microsoft doing it with the Series consoles.
Sony is definitely looking worse right now.its ridiculous. As a huge sony PlayStation since day 1 in September 9. 1995 here in queens new york they deserve the backlash.thats not the sony i grew up with.come on wtf.word up son
@Dezzy70 exactly, it's obvious sony are spending more and more on making games along with films and TV series to go along side those games. Plus the acquisition of bunjie and the production of the PSVR2 (the only console maker atm to make a side project), they are obviously feeling the crunch due to rising prices.
Though I'd rather them not raise the price and instead scrap the VR side
I own a PS5 but I'm done with Sony, this is my final PlayStation Im ever gonna buy until things change i.e Jim Ryan getting sacked or demoted. Or Sony goes back to being pro consumer like the ps4 days where you felt welcomed on the platform and not seen as a number.
this price increase is an insult to all gamers and I hope they revert the decision.
@UltimateOtaku91
I’ve just been told on Pure Xbox not to go full Otaku, over here on Push Square. Such fun 🤩
From the same/only company that sells £/$70 games 🙄
I do wonder if this is one of those rare things were they will just turn around and not do it.
Btw any word on how this price change will impact bundle editions?
@AFCC. Its like they went from hulk hogan in the wwf to Hollywood hulk hogan in wcw.haha😄😳🤔😀.word up Son
When im having a bad day i sit back and roll a joint and read the comments from pushsquare
@Dezzy70 I saw and by the hypocrite no less 😂
All fun and games, no pun intended
@LiamCroft 100% it should be covered. I can't think of a reason why you guys wouldn't cover it.
For the Payers!
@zupertramp Not really then if you use that example then when they brought out the Switch lite they lowered the price. You can also get the Original Switch for the same price. Oled Displays are more expensive so it make sense in this case. Sony made no changed other than some small revisions to make it cheaper to manufacture. Sony didnt raise the price and give people a better system. Problem is who ever is making the decisions at Sony right now is not very smart. Release a model that at least is a LE or a bundle or more storage do not just raise prices on the exact same model.
Imagine Switch getting a price hike 5+ years later. Now that would be wild.
Nintendo never drops its prices. Wii U was still selling at full price until it left the shelves forever.
I can genuinely see Microsoft pulling a major coup by dropping the price of Series X to win people over. Imagine a world where there's an £80 difference in price coming up to the Christmas shopping season.
@AFCC I just said this to my wife yesterday night. Sony is looking more and more like the villain these days. Especially with all the negative press as of late.
@__jamiie Microsoft’s pockets are very deep so this could definitely happen, especially with all the games they have lined up for 2023.
@UltimateOtaku91
Let’s keep it chilled it certainly is all fun and games.
Haha OK you had your clown moment for the week Sony!...now reverse course please.
You know you screwed up bad when even Nintendo had to make a statement. They're usually quiet with the competitions and let their sales do the talking. TBF though, Switch is already an aging console so it would be weird to have its price increased, even with the OLED model.
@playstation1995
It doesn’t matter about your game pass, kiss my arse.
The Rock will turn his dual sense side ways and stick it up you candy arse 😂😂😂
Yeah feels like Nintendo are not quite telling the full story here. The OLED switch launched only last year at the same price as the launch model meaning they could keep prices fixed, despite the cost of components likely having reduced considerably given the age of the technology under the hood. They have no need to increase the price. They will just launch another revised model down the road and sell the same old rope to nintendo diehards. Its their tried and tested business formula, and they do very well out of it.
Microsoft on the otherhand are in a very different position they clearly dont care for - as Phil put it this week - the plastic under the tv. They just want the subscribers to gamepass, hence the maassive charm offensive this gen to make themselves appear like the good guys who care about consumers (they dont). They can afford to absorb the costs, so long as more and more people sign up for their service - so this is a massive PR win for them.
As for Sony. Its just another facepalm moment in a long list of facepalm moments. Announcing this the day before the announcement of the increased price cap on energy in the UK in particular is a spectacular own goal. Gaming is - at the end of the day - a luxury hobby, and will be one of those areas people look to cut back where they can. So people will not look kindly on this. Got to pay for that bungie acquisition somehow though right?
As i said yesterday, dont be surprised to see Sony start talking a lot about VR 2, GoW Ragnorak, and maybe even announce a showcase, or an acquisition once the Last of Us is out to try and score some PR wins. The only question is whether its too late. This will bite Sony, but they wont truly feel it until something like the launch of PS6 where consumers will punish them - as they did with PS3, and as they did with Xbox last generation - unless they really work hard starting now to turn that ship around
@Dezzy70 I'm chill, I have no problems with anybody and I do mostly see it as fun and games.
On a serious note the price raise isn't good for us consumers but there must be some reason, they wouldn't do it for fun like most seem to think.
But let's give it time see if it effects their sales long term and if it does then they will have learnt their lesson and if xbox overtakes playstation then they have themselves to blame.
Though if they do notice sales decline I'm sure they will backtrack or reduce the price below its original price. Or do what I think is the best decision Microsoft have done this gen, and make a cheaper model for those who are struggling with day to day costs.
@SplooshDmg
It’s such fun today, so much going on.
And being honest everyone having fun and not getting to serious 😊
@Dezzy70 Only two of those games are PS5 exclusives, if you still have a PS4 I don’t think there’s a reason to absolutely get a £480 PS5 plus £70 games, even though Returnal is my GOTY from last year.
Well, its been a terrible week to be a PS fan. Hate to say it but the moment they dropped their next showcase and once Dad of Boi 2 releases, all will be forgotten.
@PlayStationGamer3919 Seems a little early in the month to me for a Showcase, not to mention it's the same week as Disney+ Day and D23 Expo.
I doubt they'd want to fight for news space with Disney.
@shred5 I really think the PS4 to PS4 Pro vs. Switch to Switch OLED comparison makes more sense because they were both mid cycle refreshers where the original system was improved upon and in Sony's case, released at the same price whilst lowering the price of the original system. The Switch Lite just does less so it's naturally cheaper.
The original Switch still being at the same launch price is like a de facto price increase to be honest.
@UltimateOtaku91
Will be interesting to see what happens.
Remember USA no price change.
I don’t think in UK and Europe it will make any difference, PS5 is on a roll there.
Next year maybe more interesting 2023 when and if Microsoft release a AAA top end exclusive game if that’s possible that lights up gamers and more importantly the general public.
But being honest it don’t think the games so called scheduled from Xbox next year so far will do that much.
@IOI
You are totally correct but PS5 still seems to fly of the shelf really well in the UK.
Man everything on the PS side is going up. The games, the console, and PS+ are all getting price hikes. What is there left to suck dry from the consumers?
Looking at where the Yen is at, it probably explains why the price has increased. Nintendo don't need too because of older hardware and Xbox is popular as a virus in Japan.
@LiamCroft
Hi Liam, sorry don't usually carry on with replies but I beg to differ here.
MS & Nintendo not having a price increase is not news.
Something not happening is not news (unless it was promised first).
As I said, it just seems this last story is to keep the flames of ire lit longer.
@Dezzy70 I don't know about that, starfield has been hyped up and will bring in players from sony that can't go without playing it, even if it's just streaming on a mobile phone, I reckon it will get 40 million players by the end of 2023 and I'd even bet you on that 😉
The other two xbox games that have been confirmed are forza motorsport which won't attract new players, the main player base for forza games are already xbox gamers anyway plus its not as open as forza horizon and its more linear so maybe it will get less players than FH5.
The other is Redfall which at first I thought was another left 4 dead clone but the latest info is that it's an open world game so now I'm interested, but again being a new ip I don't think it will do as well as starfield or halo etc
But as you say the Challenge is making sure those games release in 2023, but I can guarantee that after this abysmal year for xbox they are doing everything in their power to make sure it happens.
2022 was playstations year
2023 will go to xbox
2024 TBA
@Dezzy70. Do you smell what the ps5 is cooking.a smelly fish. 😝 🤔😄😂.yuck.word up son
@Futureshark this Sony business prompted people to ask competitors in the market if they had any plans to raise prices. Those competitors released statements as to their intentions in this regard. That's quite literally news.
@Dezzy70 To each their own. My PS5 barely gets used. Once I finish an exclusive, I turn it completely off until the next exclusive comes out (no sense in drawing power if it won't get used for a while).
Granted, I made my Series X my "everything else" machine. Even that is sitting in Off for now while Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on Switch is my main focus.
Other than Sony's exclusives - which are great - there are plenty of other options for AAA games elsewhere that don't require a PS5.
It's fine if you choose PlayStation as your main console. Nothing wrong with it - it's a solid system.
I do wonder what your "breaking point" is, though.
You seem to have pretty strong faith in a company that has done some pretty back-handed things to its customers during the PS5 generation.
As I said, it's all about principle. None of the other console makers are concerned about these so-called economic hardships. Yet, here people are defending Sony's decision.
Perhaps it's kudos to Sony for breeding such strong faith from its consumer base: Sony does no wrong - or at least, it puts out a great excuse why it [expletive] its fans.
"Thank you, sir, may I have another?"
It's not because I hate PlayStation or Sony. I just want the company to read the room, not its profit margins.
It's inevitable that both other platforms will raise their prices, this is what happens with inflation. Certainly here in the UK where inflation is projected to hit 18% next year.
Struggling to understand why Sony are being perceived to being criminals for what is happening or will happen during these truly miserable times but hey it's the age of internet over reactions
Apple are raising the prices of their new iPhone 14 that's about to be announced
They’re looking mighty foolish right now.
New slogan… Playstation: For the Investors.
@BartoxTharglod I 100% agree on this.
To me, of the three, Nintendo has released the best exclusives this year. Even GOW:R couldn't change this, as it will be the last great AAA from Sony this year.
@Mostik idk. Why is it that they raise the prices on PS5 only. I don’t see them doing to the other decides that Sony produce and sell? Just wierd.
@LiamCroft It’s not the news they want to hear. They don’t want to hear about how tiny Tim is going to freeze to death this christmas in old London Town because his parents spent £30 extra on a ps5 instead of heating. Serves him right. PlayStation needs to stay in profit!
They want positive news! Like all the stories about financially struggling Sony buying studios this year. Post when they buy square!
At this point in Switch's life cycle I wouldn't expect a price hike. For Xbox it's a different story. MS obviously has the money to take the hit. Will the company be willing to do so is the question. There are 'no plans' right now that doesn't mean the same will be true in October or November.
@AFCC that's how they started, that's how they'll go out. Respectable.
Sony make around £1.5 billion a quarter (probably more now the pound is devaluing, link https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/aug/04/sony-profits-soar-benefits-from-home-entertainment-boom-playstation-5?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other) and the number of people making excuses for this decision is straight up mad. Crap for consumers, crap look and real crap for skint people trying to buy one for kids this Christmas.
@Bleachedsmiles
I thought that people who were feeling the rather large pinch at the moment had the choice of 'heating or eating'.
Not 'heating or PS5 for Xmas'. I kind of hope that Tiny Tim isn't spoilt enough to get everything he wants at the cost of living.
Nintendo isn't stupid. If your five-year-old hybrid that's significantly less powerful than last gen home consoles is still selling 20+ million units a year, you don't derail the gravy train with a greedy, short-sighted move like jacking up the price of the base model in the middle of a worldwide economic downturn.
@zupertramp The OLED Switch has superior build quality (metal frame, louder speakers, glass OLED screen, nicer dock, robust kickstand, etc.) in addition to double the on-board memory. Obviously not $50 extra in improvements per unit, but definitely worth the extra money if you play in handheld mode at all.
The low initial price of the base device gave Nintendo some wiggle room for a higher price on a more premium SKU.
There was initially a lot of pushback on the device being more expensive (against it existing at all, actually), but people changed their tune once they actually got ahold of the revision and realized how much better it actually made the undocked play experience.
@11001100110zero It is frustrating mate, it just smacks of greed. They are already charging the most for software here in the UK (more than any other platform) which wouldn't normally bother me as on the whole I am very happy with the games they put out but when you look at the bigger picture and the money they are making it just doesn't add up 🤷♂️
@BartoxTharglod
Not for me Nintendo have not.
Kirby was ok but that’s is it for me from Nintendo 2022.
Nintendo in house AAA studios are nothing like the first two amazing years of the Switch game wise.
@playstation1995
I shall welcome you to the NWO 😂
ps4´s success made sony greedy
@UltimateOtaku91
Of course there will be some amazing Xbox statistic about Starfield, how many million players.
Doesn’t mean they purchased the game or enjoyed it. It means they downloaded it on game pass had a quick look and that it.
I’m not playing Microsofts silly millions of players rubbish statistics.
Just like halo infinite Xbox mouthed off about millions of players what about now.
“Halo Infinite isn't in the Top 10 of most-played Steam games. In fact, at a little more than six months old - and its fan-favourite multiplayer component entirely free-to-play and available on Steam - Halo Infinite doesn't even breach the top 50 games that boast the highest concurrent player numbers. Or the top 100.”
Xbox all lies and full of it when they want to be.
The most untrustworthy of the lot of them. Phil the mouth piece and gang are corporate trash.
Of course not they ain't being run by a greedy dumb****.
@BartoxTharglod While it's Ubisoft developed, I'd also like to chip in and mention the new Mario + Rabbids game as well, which also looks fantastic.
And although it's also out on PC, the new expansion for the latest Monster Hunter game, Sunbreak, is also console-exclusive to Switch.
They're having an absolutely incredible year. Might even top 2017 for me.
@Ralizah But all the other unchanged components would be cheaper to manufacture. Look, I personally don't see justification for it being more (it's why I decided against getting one despite having a wife who plays exclusively in handheld mode) but obviously everyone's outlook on that could differ.
I was merely adding perspective that historically speaking aging consoles go down in price over time. And when we had a cycle that warranted a refresh, those upgraded console (for both MS and Sony) took on the price point of the aging console.
To not see Nintendo's decision to ask an additional $50 as a tad greedy (and to not lower their initial launch price of the OG Switch to boot) but then see this as Sony being the devil in corporate form just seems a little weird to me.
Oh and sorry if you got a reply notification that wasn't there. I was mid rant and I inadvertently hit reply before done lol.
@BartoxTharglod
Like you said each to their own.
Kirby was good but the rest do nothing for me.
As where in the first two years of the Switch did lots for me games wise and was amazing from Nintendo in house studios. Since then their in house studios AAA wise have done not much at all.
@zupertramp
"To not see Nintendo's decision to ask an additional $50 as a tad greedy (and to not lower their initial launch price of the OG Switch to boot) but then see this at Sony being the devil in corporate form just seems a little weird to me."
Why is it weird? Nintendo is asking more for SWOLED because it's a higher-end product. The base model didn't see a jump in price, and for people who want an even cheaper entry to the ecosystem, Switch Lite exists. Whereas Sony is simply jacking up prices on existing products without offering anything in return to the consumers, which is the actual reason there's backlash.
Why would xbox increase the price of the series x/s, when they’ll eventually be increasing the price of game pass? Not a fan of price increasing, especially with all the cost of living now.
@TeapotBuddha with the skulls of my enemies.
@Futureshark exactly! Screw tiny Tim! If he wanted heating and a ps5 he should have gotten a second job! 🤔
I'll never understand why certain gamers want the 'flames extinguished' from any backlash so quickly when it has every chance of benefitting them as a gamer.
Look at the actual message Sony is sending... Nintendo and Microsofts response to that message is of course news - positive (for now) news.
Anyone want a free HFW download code for PS5 and PS4?
Please only if you really want to play the game and for yourself, it can only be redeemed once obviously.
@Ralizah weird because in a similar situation, with no historic worldwide inflation, Sony gave us the Pro for $399. Obviously a higher end product than the base PS4 but they didn't ask more for it. Only in relation to the base console's reduced cost, unlike Nintendo who didn't reduce base model's cost and thus asked more for the oled version - that's not greed?
Now yes, the PS5 hasn't changed but the cost to make them likely has. Hence the price hike. Just like everything else on the market right now.
**And yeah Nintendo isn't raising their price because it's been high for awhile now. And seriously y'all... give MS some time.
@Dezzy70 I would. But you should sell it on eBay get yourself some money for another game
@Bleachedsmiles
If you really want to play it I don’t mind at all.
There are loads on eBay because of the bundle deal of late in the UK.
@Dezzy70 Yeah I would, like all their first party games I've been waiting on a sale. So if you're sure I'll for sure would like it
@Bleachedsmiles
Ok how do we do this.
I thought I could post it on here but then someone else might read it and use it before you.
Any ideas?
@Dezzy70 I think I can private message you...on sec
@Bleachedsmiles
Ok will wait for that then. Didn’t know you could do that on here.
Nintendo Switch is old tech and that would be absurd. Xbox has consistently been handled by Playstation since the OG Xboxs inception, lacks compelling first party content and has the Microsoft war chest. This all makes sense and actually aligns most markets pricing to that of the US
@Dezzy70 heh ok I don't know how to private message you - I thought it could be done on here. If you want you can message me on PlayStation though...same username. And I'll get back to you on there
Everyone sure likes to dismiss Nintendo's commitment due to the Switch's age... Doesn't change the reality that they ARE suffering manufacturing costs just the same and yet AREN'T passing the expenses off to consumers.
And Microsoft is, more or less, in the same boat as Sony. Yet I never would've pictured them doing a price hike, and that seems like a just assumption given their statement.
This is straight bulls***, especially that it's targeting select markets. Make whatever justification you want (anyone pouring their heart into anti-consumer damage control should really contact Sony about payment, because y'all deserve it for your spins), This is a sh**y practice and should be condemned.
@Bleachedsmiles
Ok will try that now
@RoomWithaMoose you aren't wrong. Nintendo has inflated costs. But on a piece of tech that they are selling for a profit and have already sold almost 100 million units and are soon announcing a successor. Xbox can't raise prices because they just aren't as competitive. They are usually consistently last In hardware sales. They also can much more easily afford to sell at a larger lose because of Microsoft as a whole.
@Rob_230 As per your observation yesterday, on one hand Jim Ryan likes to push the Playstation branding these days as a "premium" product ala Apple ot Nintendo & bank on brand loyalty.
Yet time & again under his management we've seen instances like say PS Plus Deluxe/Premium marketed as accessing a library of psp/ps1/ps2 games & after a handful of launch titles,(some rehashed),there's been silence on further titles being added-indeed it seemed more an exercise to push the PS Now service by another name & still in limited regions.
After early gen promises of free upgrades to match XB,we then had the Horizon Forbidden West upgrade fiasco where they seemingly wanted to test the reactions about upgrades & then Mr Ryan came back after "listening" to push the upgrade program going forward.
His management seems to be entirely reactive & seeing just what they can get away with. Compare the ps4 era when not only they undercut XB on price in a very PS1 pricing type ambush, but even the games like Ratchet & Clank,Medievil or TLOU remaster weren't priced at top range new release prices like say TLOU PS5 will be being $125 rrp my neck of the woods.
@Dezzy70 what a guy giving a free code away. Good man 👍🏻
@Dezzy70 You may need to send me a friend request first though I think
@zupertramp Console pricing is generally down to market trends at the time. Nintendo has also dropped prices on their handheld consoles when they felt they were underperforming. Sony launching a premium revision at the same price as the base unit tells me they were trying to invigorate sales in order to reach certain internal sales goals.
Nintendo isn't dropping the price of their base model because demand for it isn't really flagging much either.
And, anyway, manufacturing costs will have likely gone up for Nintendo at well, meaning that staying at the same price point for the base model is also probably biting into profit margins a bit. Not really comparable to the industry in 2016.
I'm not saying Sony is some awful company for doing what they've done. They're taking a calculated risk based on internal assessments of how much this will depress demand in certain markets. But it shouldn't be surprising that people might be angry that Sony is asking more while offering nothing in return, and it's not really comparable to Nintendo charging more for a more premium product.
@Bleachedsmiles
Tried to send you the email on PSN
did you get it.
You seem very locked down on your account 😂
@Bleachedsmiles
Can see you on line now. Did you get the message and code
@Nyne11Tyme But manufacturing costs are still affecting Nintendo's bottom line. And Microsoft isn't, despite what people want to believe, an endless pit of money that isn't concerned with profits. Stop acting like Sony is the underdog here; they aren't. And Sony could've survived taking the brunt of these offset costs.
@Michael2008ish
To late, I’m afraid 😱
See us PS5 owners just give stuff away.
@Deadlyblack
But why?
Sony has given them a gift in terms of PR.
@Dezzy70 heh I can't remember what settings I picked but I think I can only get messages from friends...remember having an issue before when trying to send messages with someone regarding a dreams creation I made. Try sending a friend request and then if that doesn't work I've obviously upset the Sony gods too much and you should offer it to somebody else
@Bleachedsmiles
Says I cannot send you a friends request as you have locked that option out of your account.
@Dezzy70 really? That's odd. Ah well, I'm not sure if you're comfortable sharing your gamer Id or not for me to try? If not it's cool, you can offer it to someone else
It honestly doesn't bother me. As long as the other consoles don't have games that interest or that are high standard, in xbox case, I won't change.
@Bleachedsmiles you should be able to change it in the privacy settings, change who can send you friend requests to anyone, or if you're out the house you can do it using the PlayStation app
@UltimateOtaku91 ok thanks, I'll do that
Yeah i had it all fully private. Must have been on the run or something at the time
Its crazy, since around the time Jim Ryan took over. You can slowly watch Playstation falling from grace. I can see the next mistake coming. When they start rolling out these 10 live service games crammed in a few years. The majority of the PS faithful will not support these games and most will probably fail.
@Bleachedsmiles haha tbf I think my settings are the same, used to get weird random requests and fake accounts sending me messages, or the odd person sending abuse if I didn't help them in fortnite or leaving a raid in destiny 😬
@Dezzy70 Hey mate I just saw your other message. I had everything set to private so didn't get your message or the code so your codes still valid to give to someone else. Thanks for the offer though!
@Ralizah I agree with you there. I own the Lite and am really enjoying the Switch, so I had the two options for the docked console. Including the Lite, they have 3 tiers of price and functionality. Quite different to increasing the price of an existing console with no revisions. I can't recall a console increasing it's price in this way ever before, though I realise these times are somewhat unprecedented, generally.
If people are happy to pay, its their choice of course, for me, I don't see myself buying a PS5 for some time now. Though thinking about it, most of the actual PS5s I had seen for sale we're already boosted above this RRP, as they were only available as bundles.
@Bleachedsmiles
No worries, I’m sure someone else wanted it.
Given that Nintendo anounced a while ago that they would cut the packaging of Switch in 20% in order to combat the increasing price of logistics, which is probably the main reason why Sony had to raise prices, I would say that Sony shot itself in the foot with the current design of PS5.
@UltimateOtaku91 heh tbh I can't even remember ever getting abusive or weird messages on PlayStation. Must have just been one of those things where I skipped past aload of the options just to get on with it when setting up the ps5.
I've had weird messages on Xbox before though sending links to certain sites
@Michael2008ish
Still have the code if you want it and going to play the game.
@Ralizah so market conditions existed for Nintendo to be basically the only console maker to not release their refreshed console at their base console's original price and that's justification enough but no market conditions exist to justify what Sony has just done? I'm a little perplexed by that yes.
Also inflation wasn't anywhere near full swing when Nintendo decided to charge more for a console that really could have just been $299 given its age (upgraded kickstand and all).
So in conclusion, what I'm saying, and what I said in the beginning, is yes Nintendo isn't raising their price because they already did when they released their upgraded console (years later) at more than the price of their launch console, which no one else typically does. That's the comparison I'm making here.
@Michael2008ish
Ok I have popped round a friends for now.
So when I get back will message you on PSN.
I think everything should go up 80% like my gas and electric has just done in the UK as of October.
Now that is a real life piss take or what.
@Michael2008ish strange, you could download the PlayStation app, you can accept requests on there and even send and receive messages which is way easier and convenient.
@UltimateOtaku91
I can’t have the PS APP on my phone.
It’s a company phone and totally free which is cool but they control the apps from the apple store that you can download.
But it is free everything and I get an upgrade every two years for free. And they did add my bank app for me, but doubt they will add the ps app 😂
@zupertramp
"so market conditions existed for Nintendo to be basically the only console maker to not release their refreshed console at their base console's original price and that's justification enough but no market conditions exist to justify what Sony has just done? I'm a little perplexed by that yes."
The Xbox One X launched at a higher price than the base system as well. Historically speaking, premium hardware launches at a higher price than the base model. The PS4 Pro was an exception, likely because Sony was trying to hit internal sales goals with their console.
I think everyone understands WHY Sony is jacking up the price. That doesn't change the dynamic that they're demanding more money while offering nothing in return. It's bad PR.
I really don't see how it should be a struggle to see why people might be angrier about a forced price hike on unaltered hardware than Nintendo offering a more premium SKU without raising prices on their base model.
"Also inflation wasn't anywhere near full swing when Nintendo decided to charge more for a console that really could have just been $299 given its age (upgraded kickstand and all)."
Again, demand is still sky-high, so dropping the price makes no sense. Companies don't make money by charging as little as possible for their products.
Nintendo has wiggle room to negotiate a higher price for the SWOLED because the price point is still fairly affordable, all things considered. That it's not cutting-edge technology is beside the point.
"So in conclusion, what I'm saying, and what I said in the beginning, is yes Nintendo isn't raising their price because they already did when they released their upgraded console (years later) at more than the price of their launch console, which no one else typically does. As I pointed out, premium hardware usually launches at a higher price point. The PS4 Pro, afaik, is an anomaly in this regard.
Launching a more expensive version of your console just isn't the same thing as increasing prices on existing hardware without offering something in return. The two things aren't equivalent.
By your logic, Nintendo decreased the price of the Switch by $100 in 2019 when they launched the budget-priced Switch Lite.
Does anybody here have premium? Do you know if you can stream games via the PlayStation phone app?
*****-tendo is definitely no angel or pro consumer either
@Michael2008ish i think most of us know that . we’re just judging based on how good companies can moderate their true intention
@Ristar24 The squeeze on access to materials for manufacturing, combined with inflation issues, is creating a scenario that the industry hasn't really weathered before, yeah.
Sony is choosing the pass the expenses incurred from this environment over to the consumer, whereas Nintendo and Microsoft are holding steady, despite reduced profit margins. I acknowledge that this is easier for Nintendo given their profit margins were larger to begin with, but that doesn't really matter, in the end. Sony is the largest company in this industry, and still makes mad profit every year from their gaming division. This doesn't make them an "evil" company or whatever, but it is understandable that the move would prove to be unpopular, and it looks terrible when people are already seeing their finances being stretched thin as is from increases elsewhere.
Yeah, I don't really see a PS5 in my near future. Especially if they continue migrating their games to PC, and if they keep their prices high, since all I'd need at this point to run their games well on my rig is a new GPU anyway (upgraded my other components back in 2020).
@Dezzy70. Oh no i dont want to be a sellout like Hollywood hulk hogan.haha.😄.im with sting.harlem heat.lex luger.the steiner brothers.etc.word up son
@Ralizah point taken on Sony being the anomaly there. Really thought Microsoft took a similar route with their upgraded Xboxes, which I honestly couldn't keep track of if my life depended on it, but if you say they were more then okay, yeah, fair enough. I still don't think the Oled Switch is worth the extra $50 but I already conceded that's for each individual to decide.
But I still don't get anger as a response, no. All of these companies are making amoral, calculated profit- driven business decisions. If the numbers change tomorrow to justify a price hike for Nintendo or Microsoft (based on whatever internal parameters they have set for that), they'll most likely do it.
To really bring it around to where I view it I'd have to go back to the OLED switch. It's simply too expensive for me. Do I hate Nintendo? Have I sworn off of them like some are doing right here in the comments with Sony? Lol, no. These companies aren't making insulin for heaven's sake. They're consumer electronics and where they set their prices aren't personal. Should Nintendo come down a little I'd probably buy the newer console.
On the flip side, if I didn't have a PS5 already and I lived somewhere it went up too much, yeah I might not buy it. It's the same way with vehicles. I own a Tundra. It's old. The engine went out. It's too expensive to fix and the cost of a new Tundra is hilariously high. So do I put a hex on Toyota and devote my life to hating them or do I move on and find a different model?
@Bleachedsmiles "They want positive news! Like all the stories about financially struggling Sony buying studios this year."
Yeah Sony has it way worse than any of us, they had to increase the prices to just get by in this cruel world. The other day I could have sworn I saw Jim Ryan near a bodega begging for change, food and warm clothes 😥
@Dezzy70. Did you download the ps app.i already download it already.and today they told me to update it.and i already did it.its a fun app.word up son
@zupertramp Well, I mean, yeah, people online are often prone to exaggeration. In general, people don't pay attention to something if they've really sworn it off, so I imagine a lot of the people who are making angry posts about divorcing Playstation will swing back around (heh) when stuff like Spider-Man 2 that requires a PS5 comes out. Assuming Sony continues to improve stock, that is.
Of course, they inevitably will lose some customers over this. That's the trade-off for raising prices without offering anything in return, which is fairly unprecedented in this industry, as far as I'm aware.
I don't think they need to drop their prices, but Ninty is leaving money on the table by not offering the tablet separately, IMO. Since I don't care to pay $100 more for new joycons and a white dock, I just went ahead and bought a SWOLED tablet from a third-party vendor on ebay. Just the tablet. That's $240 that went into some random dude's pocket instead of Nintendo's.
I'd never go back to a regular Switch, but its appeal also largely depends on how much you play it off the dock. Dock-primary players obviously won't get much out of the upgrade, but it makes a huge difference in the hand. It feels very premium, like the PS Vita did back in the day. That's the biggest reason the narrative kind of shifted on the OLED model over time.
@Ralizah Yes, its really up to individuals if they choose to buy the PS5 at this price. I was interested in the console, but as time has gone on, the initial hype has faded. The higher cost will deter me further. I really liked the PS3 and PS4, but the Switch Lite really got me back into Nintendo. After growing a decent digital Library, the OLED Switch was my next console. Its a very unique product and retro games look great on that OLED screen. At this point Sony have pretty much lost my custom, as I'm mostly buying games on Switch and even let my PS+ expire, moving to NSO. Nintendo really did make the Vita 2 I was looking for.
@playstation1995
Scott Steiner later on his own was a nut job.
Or was it all character I could’ve never work him out. Big papa pump.
Log onto Push, see Mario and an American flag. Yep, all is right in the world.
@zupertramp They didn't discontinue the old model though, it still sells at the original price, so it's not a price hike, it's literally the Switch Pro everyone wouldn't shut up about and all it has is a new screen and bigger speakers. For handheld gamers it's a "pro" model for more money. For docked-only gamers there's literally zero reason to buy the OLED other than a little more internal storage, and the old model still exists for that. If Sony still sold the launch model for the old price and then sold a model with 50GB more SSD for 10% more that would be a better comparison.
@Bleachedsmiles If Tiny Tim needs heating and a PlayStation they have a console for him. It's called PS4 Pro. And like PS5 it's an eBay exclusive.
@Dezzy70 Handing out free $70 games. Your alt is exposed, Mr. Spencer!
@Michael2008ish. I meant by hulk hogan was a good guy.similar to PlayStation.and as the years gone by he sold out.and he didnt care about his fans no more and he became Hollywood hulk hogan haha.rest is history.😳😬🤔😀.haha.word up son

@playstation1995
But he came back to the WWE and after the Rock battle the reception was amazing the next Monday night raw.
@RoomWithaMoose yes the could have. But the fact remains that Nintendo has no real reason to raise prices on tech that old. If they did that it would set a new precedent altogether. I can't think of another instance where something over 5 years old increased in price regardless of inflation. Xbox is consistently last in regards to market share and would only be shooting themselves in the foot as they struggle more than the other 2 to sell consoles. Sony is also selling new tech at a loss and now an even bigger loss. I'm not saying it doesn't suck but all 3 are in uniquely different positions. I'm just trying to keep an open mind to the situation.
Well this is embarrassing ._.
Sony doomed.
Wait...that doesn't sound right.
to be fair, the nintendo switch has NEVER been given a price drop. it should be $100 cheaper than it is now. i'm got going to suddently give nintendo credit for not increasing the price. they have been terrible with their software pricing as well.
as for sony: what has jim ryan done to you? this almost feels like a domestic abuse case.
Don’t want to be that guy but gaming is a luxury, if the price rises then the prices rises.
Ultimately a decision has to be made on whether this hobby is affordable for you.
Not like you haven’t been able to get a PS5 for the last 6 months if you really wanted one. Plenty of avenues to do so but no doubt everyone will disagree.
Same people complaining will buy the iPhone 14 for £1500 day 1.
@Rafie but I think it's fair to say that they do deserved said bad press, imo
@Porco If you are up to casual games (especially point and click adventures and hide and seek) Switch is the best console. I have 2 (lite and oled) and that machine is amazing and these games can be bought for 1/4 than on PS (on "sale" of course). Yes, mediocre and AAA titles are way expensive, but casuals are way cheaper. Plus credit cashback even more surprises.
On the other hand PS5 still didn't convinced me. Serious games are - after 2 years - still in development and price hike is just another evidence that Sony is in big trouble. Live Service games that no one wants, chaotic tiers of PS Plus that only tries to play the string of retro gaming, and lack of some serious informations about everything only shows, that Sony maniacaly rushed PS5 without any serious vision of future. Than vortex of fusions, acquisitions and exclusivity war started to spin Sony's head and they are suddenly came into position, where their piedestal of No.1 is starting to crumble.
@Jacko11 & i can’t wait til the 14 drops . i’d sell my ps5 at actual price for it & pay double !
@zupertramp while that's true they did so under the guise of providing more value. Sony could easily toss a year of PS plus or Ratchet in. Doubtful though.
@zupertramp Yeah but the OLED model was never cheap, it offered the same stuffs as the base model but better. Instead of 32gb storage, you get 64gb storage, instead of tiny speaker you get bigger speaker, instead of one puny stand you get a larger bigger stand, instead of a USB dock you get a new one with LAN support, instead of 3-5 hours battery life you now get 6-8 hours battery, and instead of a LCD screen you get a bigger better colorful OLED screen. All minor features that totally deserve that $50 raise.
@Ralizah but yeah at the end of the day if people feel anger then they feel anger. Who am I to say what the correct reaction is. I mostly just proffered that one could view Nintendo's higher priced upgraded model as an earlier increase. Even if, as @serpenterror also argues, one feels the extra features justify the additional cost well, I mean, they still decided to slap it together to warrant charging more. Not like they needed to release it. Switch had been selling fine regardless. But why settle for x amount of money when you can make more?
I do recognize that the situations are different though to be sure as I agree this is unprecedented. But then these are seemingly unprecedented times. And with basic necessities where they are at price wise, I just can't muster anything more than ambivalence toward Sony over this. Really I just want a house but I don't know who exactly to yell at concerning our nationwide housing shortage and high interest rates. But I digress.
Certainly a tablet only option would be nice. I won't argue with that. I'm not really one for handhelds myself which is probably why I have such a sour view on the premium priced OLED model. There isn't much improvement there for me.
@jmoss you're not wrong there. I could live with that assessment, that they could have gotten away with a price bump if they'd throw in six months of plus essential or something.
This is some of the reasons Japanese Yen is weak right now also the suppliers hike the parts and raw materials for manufacturing the PS5 Console. Jim Ryan should have add this on his announcement.
Source-NHK World Japan.
@get2sammyb Pretty good margins is lowballing it. Nintendo actually makes more profit than Sony, they just don't have the huge revenue stream from 3rd party.
Actually this is kinda lose/lose for Sony. They do not have the bulk of their profit from first party titles and high margins on hardware. Nintendo actually sells lousy hardware that never drops in price, and neither does software. They can easily eat these costs because, well it's "Nintendo." Xbox is Microsoft, and they can eat the costs of an entire nation if they felt like it. I do hope you are balanced and do a logical explanation article about this. Nintendo's profit margin is like 30%, Sony's is what 12% or 15%? (Gaming division of course)
Having said all that, goodwill is worth billions, and I do think Sony should bite the bullet on this unless they have some metrics that foresee the future being extremely bleak for years to come or something. At the end of the day, they are still a rich billion dollar company. But this is just a loss for Sony making Nintendo/MS look good, they actually are in very different positions when it comes to the market, and NONE of them are that generous towards consumers. Just take a glance at how expensive 7 year old hardware is from Nintendo (it releases old) and their software prices. Xbox tried to push Gold up by double lol. Sony is very easy to pick on though, making very stupid PR blunders.
Is it possible Xbox isn’t raising their prices because they are sitting on a warehouse full of systems they can’t sell?
Seeing some of the fanboy spin on this is actually insane.
Cult like I swear.
@UltimateOtaku91 Nah, I'd rather more competition in the VR space. I'm mostly saying that because I'm involved in it, but I don't want Meta/Facebook to have a monopoly over the market like they've had in the past few years.
But also, I'm surprised that there isn't a standalone PlayStation VR on the works.
I really think it will be hilarious if microsoft and nintendo lower the price of their console instead 😂
Easy good PR for Nintendo and Microsoft. Nintendo sits on old and cheap hardware to produce at a large profit with a similarly lousy price policy of not getting cheaper after six years. Microsoft has deep moneybags. Not a smart move from Sony, but vilifying them about this is proper moral grandstanding.
@nomither6 weird statement but ok dude.
@wiiware I can easily see Microsoft releasing a S and X bundle with a big game (not the best, but a big hitter - think FIFA standard) and an extra controller just in time for Christmas for £250 and £450 respectively, making the tub of lard 5 look like the overpriced and under resourced console that it is.
I have a Pro with an SSD - no need for another one.
Not a good look.
Of course Nintendo won't. They are on the third edition of their console and it's much, much older and lower quality tech and far easier to produce and they have large profits from sales percentage of their handheld.
Everything in the UK has gone up but people keep going out, going to concerts, activities, sports, pubs, meals out, shopping prices increased, energy, fuel and more...yes let's slam Sony for a one off £30 increase. It's the UK government partly to blame as trade deals etc are all over the place.
MS have so much money that they yet, do not need to lower...but they may do?
@sanderson72 Come on mate...I had a Pro and it's not in the same league as the PS5. It's night and day.
@Mezzer That's true - PS4 has got a much better UI and there are only 6 games it can't play.
@zupertramp that's essentially what they've done in America. You can't find anything but the Horizon bundle.
@AFCC
They get more like Apple day by day
