Bella Ramsey, the star of HBO’s upcoming The Last of Us, knows you’re concerned about the upcoming show – but insists you’re going to love it, as she believes it “honours” the game. Live action adaptations of video games tend to be hit or miss, with the most recent example being Resident Evil. But according to Ramsey, this is one conversion that will be well-received.
“I think people are going to love [the show],” the young actress told SheKnows. “I know there were people worried about it, of course. When something is so precious to you as a viewer – as a gamer – of course you’re going to be worried about the adaptation. But honestly, I think people are going to love it. It very much follows the emotional beats of the game, and it’s very respectful of the game and honours the game.”
Despite all this, Ramsey was eager to add that it’s not a complete retread: “It explores different avenues that weren’t explored so much in the game. I do think people are going to love it. I hope they do. It was so much fun to make, such an experience. I hope that [audiences] feel that experience too when they come on the adventure with us.”
Filming has now concluded on the television show, ahead of a release next year. In the meantime, we’ll have PS5 remake The Last of Us: Part I to keep us occupied, which Naughty Dog has insisted is not a cash grab.

I'll give it a look at least. Pedro Pascal should be interesting as Joel.
Can anyone imagine a scenario in which the actress would say, "fans are going to hate this show?"
I just can't see it being interesting if it's closely following the plot of the game. If the storytelling in the game felt constrainted, sure. But it didn't.
As generic of a universe as it can be without focusing on the Joel/Ellie dynamic, I still think this would've been better off of it followed other characters.
This is gonna go over well on this site but I'm sorry, she looks visibly British... which hey great for say 28 Days Later or whatever but not buying her as Ellie. We'll see though. Lord knows I'm gonna watch it regardless. Just kinda surprised we couldn't find an all American looking tomboy in the entire country apparently.
@zupertramp bit of a silly point to raise that. Im sure she will 'look american' in this because, you know, shes an actor. I mean, joel is played by a chilean yet you dont seem to question that.
@Ambassador_Kong Goat Simulator - The Series or Movie: Not even the network recommend you watch this show, the CEO says he's resigning after watching it.
Edit: This is a joke in regards to the quotes that the trailer of the game has and not that a Goat Simulator series or movie would be bad. Could be fun.
Not going to say it's crap don't watch it is she lol
@zupertramp Considering the amount of British actors over the years who've done a better job portraying Americans then actual Americans, I think she'll be fine.
@zupertramp how does one “LOOK” British
I'm sure they will. The Last of Us fans are a famously rational and open-minded bunch.
I like the two main actors but I’m not sure if they’re right for Joel and Ellie. Cautiously optimistic for the premier.
@danzoEX
I can't wait to watch this with the missus and for her to see clickers for the first time 😌
I mean it's an HBO show, it's going to be good.
It's either to be okay or trainwreck like halo show.
@nessisonett
"The picture shows a classic Boxing Day trip to football"
HBO always have good series I can't wait to see it
I’ll watch every episode for as long as this show goes on. I’m excited to see if they’ll show more backstory to the characters and what roles Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson are gonna play. They can expand on so much that wasn’t covered in the game, like Sarah’s mother, what happened between Joel and Tommy after the outbreak, the rise of the Fireflies, how Joel and Tess met, Bill and Joel’s relationship, etc. There’s lots of material that can be covered.
I'll give it a go and see what's its like, I just finished up Resident Evil and I actually really enjoyed most of it
Hard doubt.
Games just do not translate well to different mediums.
I fear there'll be too many "hey 'member this from the game?!" moments that it'll just ruin their moment.
As long as Joel end up golfing, I'm good
I'll start watching it and hopefully I'll want to finish watching it.
Hmm... PR quotes are always positive. I wonder why.
Actor in show says their show will be great.
@zupertramp Is this the part we complain that Joel isn't a 200lb redneck looking MF?
@danzoEX maybe it’s because you are an American, but me as a European. I just need to look at people without them saying a word and I just know. You are German or British or Italian or Spanish or Greek. And yes most British people have a certain look and you just know. I’m 99% of the cases I am right. The same when you are in Africa. For white people its difficult to distinguish between the different races. A black girl from Congo I dated knew just by looking at someone if they were from Nigeria or Ethiopia or Ghana etc.
I mean, I always want to cuddle Pedro Pascal, so it will have that going for it as the emotional hook.
Fans of the game are one thing, but I can only imagine other more "casual" viewers seeing this as just another zombie show. On the surface its not a whole lot different from all the Walking Dead spin-offs, just with funkier-looking zombies.
not gonna watch :^)
Why o why couldn't the chick in the forest scenes of this brilliant fanmade-film play Ellie? She looks like her as two drops of water..

@Ambassador_Kong Lol, this is true that the actors/actresses aren’t likely to bomb the movie, but lest we forget Tom Holland’s remarks prior to the Uncharted release where he basically was prepping the audience to be disappointed. (Speaking of British actors playing American characters…)
Might have been a better time to do this show around 2016/17 when TLoU game was still considered goat. Got a feeling even if this show is really good people are still gonna try poo on it somehow cause jumping on a bandwagon of part 2 hate and golf leaks and the recent part 1 remake leaks and so called cash grab. I hated the way Abbey was introduced too with knowing nothing about her back story after what she just did but never understood the hate of the way Abbey looked. A woman is allowed to lift weights equally the same as a man does and a woman is equally allowed to get revenge for killing her father regardless if we knew nothing about her back story or not at the time. Our England women just beat Germany to win Euros and I bet there's some men that secretly hate this but keep it quiet. I don't know where I'm going with this my head sometimes takes side paths off track
@nessisonett
I work with dudes who look like that 😂😂😂.
And yes the stereotypes are true. Every single one of them drive a beat up Silverado or F-150 with a 6 inch lift kit.
@danzoEX @Richnj @AdamNovice @Weebleman I've already complained about Joel too, yes. And yeah they could have found someone more befitting of what I think of as Joel but the more images I see with Pascal in the role, I've gotten over it.
Just to be clear though, no problem with British actors taking on American roles. They usually do fine if not better. And yeah, usually better. I'm just saying some actors look quite British and I don't think of Ellie as looking that British. In the same way I don't think of Robin Hood as having an American accent while looking like Kevin Costner.
It's really a minor thing. Just think the casting on this is peculiar. But I already knew this would prove an unpopular and admittedly ignorant sounding opinion so that's on me really.
Like does Russell Brand even need to open his mouth for people to guess that he's British? Sometimes people are just so obviously British. I didn't mean to be controversial or even hurtful saying that. On the flip side there are people who look obviously American - like painfully so.
And then other times I look someone up that was amazing in an American role and lo and behold they're British and I had no idea. This happens all the time. So not saying all British people look the same. Just that some very much look the part.
But to be clear, none of this was meant as a slight. So my apologies there.
I'll reserve judgement til I've seen some episodes, but when it comes to videogame adaptations, they've always said "it's TRUE to form".."gamers will love it!", etc, from bloodrayne to doom to resident evil.
I never really understood the point of adaptations in general. We played the game, so what purpose would a series or film serve? Maybe just watch 28 Days, I Am Legend or The Road?
@Mythologue 💵💴💰 Hello?!
@AchievingInGames lol seriously? Racist towards Brits? Just never heard that one but possibly I guess.
I'll say this and then let it go... I'm sure the casting director for Downton Abbey wasn't at all in search of a certain look. Not one bit.
Looking forward to the show, especially with how they plan on handling future seasons!
Did mention anywhere else if she has played the game?
@zupertramp you must be referring to attire because the concept of appearing native for many of us has been well and truly turned on its head. I still do it though “look at that Scot he has fantastically auburn hair” but I was convinced Christian Bale was American after so many roles and then on comes Le Mans 66. And Empire of the Sun; I recognised that English boy “off the bat”
@zupertramp
I mean how exactly does one "look British"? American shows are full of actors you wouldn't even realize were British unless you physically looked it up.
@PegasusActual93 @SystemAddict I elaborated in subsequent comments and kinda tire of defending a statement that was meant far more playfully than everyone is taking it but I do feel the need to clarify again, this was not a "all British people look the same" type deal.
I simply meant some people have immutable physical characteristics that really are common wherever they are from. That's just, like, observation, not insult. Some Eastern Europeans look the part, some Scandinavians, some Irish etc. Why people are taking this as a negative I'm not sure but again I'll reiterate... I also think there are some Americans who look so undeniably American-ish, they'd probably have a hard time passing as anything else.
Show business is, among other things, a superficial medium. And none of how one looks really matters all that much except in this case. Even then, it was never meant as an insult. People look a certain way. I look a certain way. Didn't know that would be quite so incendiary.
@zupertramp
That is just a very weird statement to me. Even if someone "looks British" they can still be an unquestionably American character. America is made up almost entirely of either immigrants or descendant's of immigrants. It just reminds me of everyone complaining about Joel not having a beard in this show. It's such a miniscule thing to complain about that effects literally nothing about the show.
@PegasusActual93 eh, I just think looks matter when you already have characters who we've seen. A character from a book wouldn't carry the same expectations imo. But this idea that people aren't going to be picky about characters they've frankly fallen in love with seems a tad unrealistic.
But I'd agree, we cast actors to act. And English actors have proven incredibly adept at their craft. That's undeniable. But to give an example, I love Hugh Grant (who doesn't?) and we could cast him as the President of the US but he's probably better suited for PM. And we can leave POTUS to say, Billy Bob Thornton.
All that to say, actors can act but in some cases the visuals just don't align as well as they could.
Edit: and yes things to do get a little fuzzy regarding America because melting pot but I'm sure I could go to certain "rallies" here in the states and come back, sadly, with some unquestionably American faces.
@OrtadragoonX a few of us drive a Dodge Ram!!
And now she has come out and said that she has been asked not to play the game at all... so if that is true, what does she know about the game and how fans will receive it? Oh my god.
