Ubisoft has confirmed that it'll be dropping last-gen consoles when it comes to the future of its Assassin's Creed series. The next game, Assassin's Creed Mirage — scheduled for 2023 — will be the last cross-gen release. Beyond that, it's PS5 only for the likes of Assassin's Creed Red and Assassin's Creed Hexe.
"We wanted to mark a change technologically and gameplay-wise as we’re moving to a fully next-gen – or current gen, I guess we call it – with the PS5 and the Xbox Series X," Assassin's Creed head Marc-Alexis Cote told VGC.
Given that we probably won't be seeing Red launch until 2024 at the earliest, this news doesn't come as much of a surprise. The PS4 will be a decade old at that point, and if we want software to keep pushing forward in terms of technical evolution, then developers have very little choice.
Still, it's nice to have confirmation, since Ubisoft has always liked putting its games on as many platforms as possible. Well, apart from the new Just Dance, for some mad reason.

Good, wished it would have happened already.
Finally! About time everyone started planning this way.
Thank god for that. Devs have to move on!
I like the sound of this the more we hear. It’s not a live-service at least. The idea of the experience of entering these games being essentially identical to the way protagonists interact with the Animus is a great one. I can imagine it’s beneficial from a development standpoint too, the backend can be essentially standardised, leaving much more of a focus on the user experience.
Did AC Infinity just go from a live service, ever-evolving multi-platform, online MMO to a 4MB Ubisoft AC game launcher?
Honestly, I am so stoked on all of this. Even though “Valhalla” was so long I haven’t yet finished it, there’s something about AC I still very much enjoy.
@nessisonett What if they made a AC VR , that would be sick
@frankmcma I feel like people just hate live service games and they don’t even know why they hate it. I think people are going to like this once they realize what it will be.
Good. Thank god. Move on from that rusty old fossil architecture already and finally push current generation technology forward ...Anything to make the (very, very, very) expensive upgrade worth it.
The PS4 and 'Bone had a good run, but they are long overdue for a hall of fame retirement.
@nomither6 Ubi did confirm that there was an AC game coming to Oculus a couple years ago along with that Splinter Cell game that was cancelled. I don’t think we’ve heard anything else since. Besides, I’m pretty sure I’d be violently ill recreating a leap of faith in VR!
Good finally, shame Mirage is cross gen but then i suppose giving its origins as Valhalla DLC it makes sense its cross gen.
Did anybody understand what Infinity is? Is it a launcher? Another subscription service (yuk...)?
@Gladio I could be wrong but it sounds to me it's just a hub that you go into and then play any game that's on it from one place.
I'm betting physical buyers may have to consider getting the games digital going forward (unless it's forced that way) or we would have a different experience having to keep putting the disc in for the game to boot up.
@Teddie-bear so they're basically forcing players to go digital going forward?
Thank God! We lost more than 1 year of actual progress with these cross-gen games!
Horizon and God of War being the biggest examples
@Gladio @Teddie-bear It'll probably be that there's a physical version for "Assassin's Creed Infinity" which comes with the first Infinity game and then all future games are essentially DLC for Infinity.
@Gladio We will have to wait and see. But to me that's how it looks to be heading this generation. Doing it slowly so we adjust to it and accept it later
The physical box of Dawn of Ragnarok is a code in the box.
The official Assassin's Creed Twitter account posted the picture of the collectors edition for Mirage and it says "Exclusive Steelbook [no game disc included]". I don't see any mention on the UK site about the lack of disc though so it might be a US thing.
It's been pointed by someone on Twitter that Just Dance 2023 is a code in the box. And then there is Sony recently did Horizon Forbidden West collectors edition and now doing God of War collectors edition with a code in the box. So who knows what will happen
@Grumblevolcano That's true it could be a possibility. Might be better off with digital in that case as everything else would be downlaoded anyway
@twitchtvpat I am still not sure exactly what Infinity is, the devs said this week that “Infinity is not a new game” and they might “look into ways to add multiplayer” at some point. But then there is also a stand alone multiplayer called Invictus that devs say will probably be free to play. Anyway I thought this was going to be like the Fallout 76 of the Fallout games, but seems more like a hub for content that allows any Infinity user to play instead of having it tied more directly into a specific title. Either way it’s exciting to see how the series expands in the coming years.
Yep, ALL developers NEED to start doing this. Ps6 will be out before we are 100 percent only in the current generation. Drop that old tech quickly, please. Makes it unnecessary to buy a new console if I can keep playing new games on the older system. Yeah yeah, graphics will be worse off. So what, it's the same story.
Too bad, but I got an Xbox so I don't mind.
@frankmcma I wouldn’t mind if they added a co op type missions , kind of like what they tried to do with unity. But from how they explained it infinite is the hub that connects these games together. So you access different time periods and stories. I’m guessing they all some how tie into each other. I haven’t checked on PlayStation yet but I noticed most of the more recent game thumb nails changed to have a similar look. I’m guessing they’ll have a tie in with infinite.
Alot of people complaining about the PS4 holding back the ps5 will be the same people that bought the last of us 'remake' a PS3 game with better graphics & rated it highly lol
@AFCC they wouldn't be out till later because they couldn't have started development until Sony had locked in the ps5's hardware & the developers had Dev kits 🤷♂️
So it's Halo Waypoint
As expected. And it's good.
That is VERY good news to hear, just a shame Mirage is still cross-gen.
