The Resident Evil 4 remake was announced as a current-gen only game back in June, but Capcom has confirmed that the title is now in development for PS4 as well, ahead of its 24th March 2023 release date.
Great news for those who are still playing on Sony's last-gen system, but the confirmation will no doubt have PS5 enthusiasts shaking their heads. After all, the console will be over two years old when Resident Evil 4 lurches onto store shelves, and arguments that PS4 development should be ditched are becoming increasingly popular.
However, given that this remake started development on PS5, it's fair to assume that it'll still be pushing the box on a technical level. It'll be interesting to see how the PS4 version compares, when all is said and done.

Capcom will get more money at least
Hunting down a PS5, while easier than it was before, is still rather sparse. More people having an opportunity to play it is always a good thing, so I don’t really mind this.
The way he said it on stream sounded like they had been prioritising PS5 while checking if they could do it satisfactorily on PS4 too.
I have no problems with this either way though.
YESSSS!!! Great!
If its the same engine as for the re2 remake, I'm guessing the ps4 version will still look pretty decent at 30 fps. Capcom have their engine tech nailed
‘Are you a calm and reasonable man?’
Colin: Time for an hour long tirade
Sacred Symbols will be fun.
Pretty happy personally. Never played RE4 before & I’m not planning to get a PS5 for at least a while. Once I can get one for the OG price + 1 bundled game i’m in.
Such a weird decision. But can only assume they actually messed around with it and somehow made it work while working on the PS5 version. But glad that people without a PS5 can get to enjoy it as well.
"arguments that PS4 development should be ditched are becoming increasingly popular"
That's church yo!
@PepperMintRex very true. I've yet to see a single ps5 console in any store
It makes sense. From a gameplay perspective, it would run perfectly fine on older systems. So the only thing that needs to be addressed is the graphical capabilities.
It's running on RE engine which performs well on last gen platforms and it is a remake of a GameCube game. Honestly I just assumed it was cross-gen when it was announced. As long as it runs respectfully I got no problem with cross-gen myself generally speaking.
@Korgon
Yeah I never understood the obsession with knocking cross generation games.
The Series and PS5 run the same architecture as the PS4 and Xbone. It’s fairly easy (for competent developers who know how to optimize) to backport new Gen games to old Gen.
These machines are basically PCs. And most current PC games will run on hardware as old a GTX 750 from 2013. Not great mind you but they do run and often have official support.
It’s all about optimization. In the case of CDPR they couldn’t optimize a hello world program, much less Cyber Punk.
But Capcom has some good optimization teams in their studios. If it can be done with acceptable performance, it should be attempted.
They can do a version that works on my nans toaster for all I care, just as long as a PSVR2 version is on the cards (Quest 2 Resi 4 is sooooo good).👍
I'll buy it at a high price..... Again.
Just let it die.
It's fine, I remember when the GameCube version was meant to be exclusive to that then it was ported to the PS2 (albeit graphically inferior).
@OrtadragoonX Some people have a weird sense of entitlement.
You'll notice it a lot with exclusives. If the game isn't just for them, they want it less.
They made all sorts of stupid arguments up to justify it too. Like worse quality, or missing mechanics. And yet, some of the most anticipated and highest quality games right now (like RE4 and God of War) are cross gen, and Horizion got flying mounts anyway.
People here saying stuff like they aren't buying it now, would be the kind to not buy the GC version of RE4 because they learnt it was going to PS2 as well.
"Let it go, let it go"
most likely this was always the case, and it was just delayed in being announced as such for the purposes of hype for that showcase.
Another sad example of this generation being nothing more than a Ps4 Pro 2.0
PS4 is just gonna pull a GTAV and keep hanging around till it sells 200M. 😄
Only the second time in history that I can recall where two different games with the exact same name released on the same console. The first time being Need for Speed: Most Wanted on Xbox 360.
As for this RE4 remake, the reveal video left me unimpressed and this announcement only reaffirms that it's deliberately being held back from what it could have been.
There is no reason for "generational" exclusives after PS3. Consoles are just PCs now.
A 1050Ti can still play everything. If you want "better" FPS, Resolution or modern lighting like RayTracing you upgrade.
There is no such thing as a RTX3080 "exclusive" that blackmail you to an upgrade. It is natural progression once games really cant run on old hardware.
The new Nvidia promotion to buy a $999 RTX3090 is SpiderMan... A PS4 port.

I have a PS5 and will probably just stick with the remaster of the original on PS4.
At least current gen gets the PSVR2 support
The truth with this gen isn’t that it’s last gen 2.0. It’s just that these consoles are architecturally similar. I remember some Insomniac devs saying they could get Rift in Time running on PS4 but it was terrible.
Any game ‘built’ for the PS5 can still run on a PS4, just not very well. You can scale back a lot of things, so this “it’s being held back by PS4” narrative plastered onto every game that gets a cross gen release irks me way too much.
If we’re talking about game design being held back then that’s a different story, but we won’t see a massive difference at the present moment because PCs were also holding the industry back due to their slower drive speeds.
Ultimately we’re all using modified PCs so nothings really getting held back by being on PS4.
I can't say I'm happy about this turn of events...
Great then I don't have to buy a Series S for the game.
Yaaay !!! Honestly so happy about this I actually get to play it Day 1 babbyyyy (:
Anyone that thinks this means the games being 'held back' by the PS4 ask yourself was doom eternal held back by the Nintendo switch
As I, and many others, have said, this was sort of obvious from the start. The game doesn't look next gen anyway and the same thing happened with RE Village.
I don't mind. In these difficult times it's good that those still rocking a PS4 can enjoy this game as well.
@TheArt they stopped manufacturing and selling PS4s a long time ago.
You can only buy a PS4 on second hand markets.
It's a weird decision though. I think Sony should have made a PS5 S, 4.5 TF machine like the Series S. They would have sold 30-40 mil consoles by now. I guess MS were smarter this gen.
I think it's a very good move by Capcom to release it on PS4. Why on earth would you ignore a 100 million strong user base. Wasn't RE2 & RE3 fantastic on PS4?
@Sil_Am In the current supply constrained market Sony almost certainly could’ve sold about 30% more PS5 if they had half a GPU size. The problem is that enthusiasts with both would buy games on the series X as that would have a superior version of most games.
Having 2 skews is a mistake because it slows game development. In the long run a better product is probably preferable to a cheaper one even if it doesn’t feel that way due to the current crises.
Ugh. I can’t wait for the PS6 to come out, so the PS5 can be used to it’s full potential…
@Sil_Am Oh yeah true. I thought about getting a Series S the other day because of Bethesda and its price but naaahh way too many games tied to my PSN account.
Great news! I will probably play this on my Series S, but it is good for people who for some reason or another can't get a next-gen console.
Oh, cool. My PC is decently more powerful than my PS4, so this gives me hope I'll be able to play RE4R without needing to upgrade to a new card. I'll reduce settings as needed to attain a comfortable framerate.
@Mylo
Considering how shockingly good the PS4 port of RE8 was I might be surprised. I have a PS5 now so obviously I am going to play it on that but it will be interesting to see how this version fares. Seriously though RE8 on PS4 was a technical miracle.
@BritneyfR_ee the way things are going, they'll still be bringing out PS4 versions even then. The machine that won't die.
@Fight_Teza_Fight Chris and Colin will be heated this week. I might have to tune in for it.
These games look and run better on last gen than most current gen games do, so I do not see any problem with this.
If you gave praise to RE8, why is this all of a sudden an issue?
PS4 is the new PS2. It's fine, though ...In this economy and with the massive price increases everywhere and on everything (especially on the PS5 itself even), I've slightly changed my opinion on this. While the PS5 does really need those big technology showcases to justify it, I do get that for millions upon millions who want to play these latest games but can't, won't or don't have any means to upgrade (which I totally get), these ports are necessary at the moment. The world is going through hell right now, so anything to make more people's lives just the slightest bit brighter with some fun new games coming to their platform, I'm all for.
@Sil_Am Actually, Sony recently ordered another million of them to prop up their console arm.
And at pretty much exactly the same time, wrote a line under the PS4 saying the total lifetime sales are just over 117 million units.
Well, basic arithmetic says that'll go up to 118 million then, won't it Sony? Plus whatever stock they also have left (though they are increasingly difficult to find in the wild too).
Another million and a few thousand and it can kick the Gameboy into 4th place and the PS4 can take its rightful podium finish!
1. Capcom developer opens up PS5 version
2. Turns off ray tracing, FPS down to 30.
3. Here is your PS4 version.
sounds like people are past the denial phase now. yes, that means there will NOT be a current gen transition and we are stuck with cross gen for the next 5 years or so...
Don't see a problem. The PS5 is still very expensive and its architecturally similar to a PS4, so easy to scale between. Also Capcom have to make it run on the Series S anyways. So they my as well make it run on the PS4 too.
Neither Sony or Capcom make much money from console hardware. They are more interested in selling games to as many people as possible. And I don't see what's so wrong with that, considering the console architecture.
It's AMD and TSMC who are the main beneficiaries of the high console prices.
YES!! its pretty much the only game that made me really wish to have a PS5, since they're still pretty expensive on my country. I'm so happy for this, I also couldn't believe it was a PS5-only game when judging by the graphics it was clearly capable to run on a PS4 too. I enjoyed the PS4 version of Village despite the load times, so I'll be enjoying this as well
@Mylo Hopefully this is the case, with the PS5 version still being prioritized.
@Mylo That's just the best way to do it for sure ^^
