We're just hours away from Sony's next State of Play broadcast at the time of writing this article and we don't necessarily want to rain on the parade, but there are rumours doing the rounds that this showing might not be the blockbuster event that many have been pining for.
Sony itself has perhaps hinted that this won't be the biggest State of Play it's ever hosted. When it announced the event last night, the company framed it as something of an introduction to Tokyo Game Show 2022, which begins later in the week. The suggestion is that this won't be the place for megaton announcements, but rather updates on existing (primarily Japanese) titles.
And now, we've got super reliable industry leaker The Snitch telling people that the show will consist of "lots of minor games". As such, we'd advise against setting your expectations sky high for this one. That's not to say there won't be any nice surprises, but again, it's probably best to keep your cool and not hold out hope for the likes of God of War Ragnarok, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and Marvel's Wolverine to melt out minds.
Having said all that, what do you want to see from tonight's State of Play? Dream big, but not too big in the comments section below.

🤣😂🤣 Story of the PS5's life.
They can’t afford to just give us an out and out crap State of Play though. Literally haven’t heard from them in months.
The cycle repeats...
Well if it would be a blockbuster event it would be a Plastation Showcase, also they wouldn't just announce it one day in advance
Its really shocking how Sony cant even fill their short SoPs with some actual good content. MS and Nintendo have multiple hour long Events every year in comparsion.
And even lasts Septembers PS Showcase was way too short and mediocre.
I said this after the previous State of Play, but that show was so good that Sony was always going to have a hard time matching the hype with its next broadcast.
Add that to the fact that fans have been begging for a proper PlayStation Showcase in September, and I think this SoP is destined to disappoint a lot of people — even though Sony itself has at least tried to set expectations in its blog post!
Most games i like best are considered “minor” games. Nothing interests me about most of the big AAA names these days. As long as i get VR, that’s what I care about.
Well it's always good to go in expecting the worst.
It probably just gonna be full of stuff that was announced in other developers abd publishers own direct, and announcements of more PS PC ports.
Wonder Woman?
@mariomaster96 thats Playstation alright.
If its nintendo who does that, it turns out to be solid .
That being said, I have low expectations for this showcase.
@Floki they are gonna announce returnal pc port
Anyone expecting spider man 2, God of war and more first party games is deluded.
They have mention what to expect but people always over hype things.
Guessing 3-5 psvr2 games, maybe more of RE8 dlc, RE4 remake ordinary or vr.
Octopath traveler release in october in ps+ extra.
Maybe Suikoden 1-5 package.
A quick look on project Eve and Pragmata.
Thats it.
Judging by all the PS tweets I've read today the SoP will consist 80% of games shown in today's Nintendo Direct. No Zelda or Pikmin, just all the farm sims.😂
Only half-joking.😝
After sitting through the awful Ubisoft one, and messing up my time zones on the Nintendo one I may sit this one out and catch up tomorrow.
@anoyonmus Yeah but Nintendo is Nintendo and Sony is Sony. Nintendo always announced Directs only 1-2 days before (except E3 Direct) whereas Sony usually announces them 1 week in advance
Why would anyone expect more anyways? All big showcases by Sony was announced 1 week ahead and were also advertised.
I'm expecting japanese games which is what playstation themselves teased. Just want at least 1 or 2 more announcements along the lines of star ocean, Valkyrie Elysium, and diofield, which is what they showed in the last japanese centric state of play
Surely they can do that... right?
Eh... Honestly I don't follow gaming events from any platform anymore. When I wake up, I just read about the highlights on pushsquare and their sister sites for the various platforms.
Bloodborne is minor right?
I mean they said it would be focused on Japanese Developers and TGS, also look at the Nintendo Direct this morning, it was the same thing. I'm expecting Diofield and Valkyrie Elysium and some Japanese releases.
People shouldn't be surprised at all.
I got my Zelda news earlier so I'm happy out with that.
As for this SoP, I wasn't hoping for much more than Crisis Core and Eternights tbh. Maybe some Octopath news.
I wouldn't complain if there was a surprise or two in there obviously, but I'm not expecting much.
It's PlayStation and videogames though, so I'm always going to be excited to just see whatever they show.
@QBGaming12 so State of Play will have a million Square Enix titles then?
just like the nintendo direct
Maaaaaaaan.
Weak uzz Jim.
Sell us the ps5 post 2022 again. Spider-man 2 is NOT enough!!
Don't depend on FF either. Your first party games.
@Shepherd_Tallon crisis core and octopath traveler were mentioned in nintendo direct tho.
Good. Keep the megatons for the big show not for TGS opening
Temper your expectations or expect a temper.
@anoyonmus Square has like a thousand games in the works it seems lol. Or Sony announces they've finally bought Square Enix.
Even lower?? Thats bold
My expectations were already super low, so no harm done.
Probably ps versions of the nintendo direct games , atelier ryza 3 , ccff7 re , symphonia and alot of farming sims , then a short trailer at the end for something we already know.
My expectations went from Jotunheim‘s peaks to Bioshock’s Rapture.
Snitch's actual phrasing made it seem like the games are bad simply because they're Japanese, so excuse me if I'm not going to put much stock into his warning. He used a racial slur when referring to them, so it's pretty clear he's biased against Japanese games.
@QBGaming12 who knows.
I mean you'll always get some nonsense saying it's over for PS if this disappoints. It's a SoP which are meant to be smaller than what showcases are. What's a little more concerning is if there's no bigger PS showcase this year but at the same time if there's many 1st party games simply not ready to be shown yet then so be it, wait till next year for when they are which will be more sexier and juicy. Yh I want a showcase but if we don't get one this year its certainly not over for PS like some would try make you believe. At least we've still got a big sexy triple A GoW Ragnarok this year
I wonder when the big showcase will be then. The previous two years it has been in September
flappy bird the return?
It's pretty obvious that no first party games will be shown, they have already said its focussing on japanese partners and games, makes sense since TGS is a few days away.
But since I love jrpgs and Japanese made games I'm actually looking forward to what they show tonight. Hoping for pragmata, Crisis core and eternights.
This whole gen has been flat. I've felt little to no excitement since the start. Oh how I miss the PS4 days.
@Milktastrophe
Maybe smaller games are for psvr2 and if you dont like vr than its not good for some.
Some more PSVR 2 news is all I am waiting for.
I already have more games I can realistically play (or afford) on PS5 till April 2023.
I'm actually looking forward to some more Japanese centric games so I'm more interested in this stream than the others
its 10 games in 20mins, with 24rs notice. was never going to be blockbuster really. especially with psvr2 in that too.
I expect new anouncements of remakes and remasters.
Honestly, this has to be the worst generation for Sony by a long way. Where are the games? Two years in and we've had three games and two remakes.
I suppose it's mostly a fallout from the pandemic, but the lack of originality or creatively is depressing.
Closing the Japan studios was the worst decision ever. They really helped to fill the gaps and offer something a bit different. Even if they didn't sell that well, the overall contribution was worth it and helped to raise their reputation in the long run. I hope these Japanese partners will offer something similar, but I'm not holding my breath.
As i said yesterday, Sony needed a showcase - a SoP is not going to cut it.
I'll go in with low expectations and hope for the best (i was never expecting megatons like some people seemed to be anticipating), but Sony are so out of touch at this point
I will say so called insiders have a lot to answer for too. They drum up so much artificial hype online for things that may or may not exist, that no company can possibly hope to meet expectations. And they ruin alot of the excitement around these events for some kind of invisible internet kudos
If there's VR games it's good anyway!
@Old-Red Yes - and it wasnt just Japan studio. Sony had exclusive relationships with the likes of Nisa, Spike Chunsoft, and Nihon Falcom which all helped to diversify Playstation's portfolio away from just hyper-realistic AAA releases. Sony, by moving away from it's Japanese origins has yielded so much ground to Nintendo that those relationships are not what they once were. Its very disapointing
Lower your expectations: Bloodborne PS5, Metal Gear Solid Remake and Death Stranding 2.
I always keep my expectations in check and usually enjoy myself. Any new PSVR games will make it worthwhile in my book anyhow...
@Old-Red
There is lots of games on ps5, maybe start looking at them.
Japan studio closed down cause most people didnt work and was lazy there, they tried to change boss but didnt work.
So they took best employees and moved them to team asobi.
@Rob_230 ironically, Nintendo pulled a similar move with the N64 and had all major JRPG makers migrate to the PS1.
Nintendo burying the competition with exclusive megatons before the other shows even start. E3 is truly back!
I figured as much myself but hey if I can at least get a character trailer for SF6, I can walk away happy.
@ThorsHammer Correct - and we all saw how well that worked out for Sony! PS1 was a beast of a console
Not expecting anything amazing so I'll catch up in the morning as it's usually not worth sitting up at that time. When they do a show at 10pm or earlier then it's usually better I think
I never expect much from State of Play to begin with, those tend to be on the shorter side and just give small game announcements. I expect more from a PlayStation Showcase which we could do with considering we don't know what else to expect from Sony after God of War Ragnarok. It feels like people hate every State of Play yet still somehow have expectations for the next one. Best thing to do with this and Nintendo Directs are go in with no expectations so when its really good it will feel great.
@Uncharted2007 that's one commentary lets everyone know that you don't have ps5
Will PSVR2 details be released tonight... really wanting that.
Is what it is but sop aside losing my patience with sony and Jim ngl.
I wish we would stop paying attention to leakers. They got everyone's hopes up by saying Wind Walker and Twilight Princess ports would be announced on Switch today and guess what, it didn't happen.
Clearly a State of Play is not on the level of a PlayStation Showcase or Future of PlayStation event.
But I’m happy to see new stuff announced at least finally.
I bought my previous Playstation consoles primarily in order to play "minor" Japanese games. A lack of AAA content from Sony doesn't bother me at all.
@AlekseyVolkov I've had one since launch. I bought AC Valhalla with it. I've bought only 5 PS5 games since. In fact, the PS5 has barely any exclusive software to justify owning it by itself. If PS5 couldn't play PS4 software as well, it would be a dust collector. It's essentially a PS4 Pro Pro.
There is no getting around how poorly Sony have done with the launch of the PS5 and a reason to own one. I would say the main draw of owning a PS5 are bar-none, the controller. Incredible controller. Is that worth the $400+ investment though?
BTW... Love the name. Great nod to the show Chuck.
@Old-Red Having very few games the first few years has been standard with playstation since PS3 but fools still wait in the rain😆
If people just look at what sony write they always state what to expect to be shown (PSVR, Japanese or third party ect) but without fail people just disregard that.
I think I'm the only that thinks Sony won't have showcase again useless it's new console I think state of play is the way they want to go. Yeah I think we would prefer a massive blowout of games in showcase but seems to me they like the one or few games approach.
That kinda fits with Sony nowadays.
@get2sammyb
“Well it’s always good to go in expecting the worst.”
Sony’s new catchphrase lol.
Nintendo Direct was excellent, so I’m cool either which way. 2023 already has a strong release schedule to start too, so this is cake icing time. I mean, seriously 2023 has twice the power of 2022’s line-up already. I’m glad next month is mostly vacant to give me time to brace myself for next year.
So, is this, "Geoff Keighley" level "lower your expectations" or is this "30 minutes of Deathloop coming to Game Pass" level of lowering expectations?
We'll probably get some of the announcements that we got in the direct already. Also, the hype around these are the people's fault, everyone hypes themselves up to a tizzy and then get disappointed. Expect nothing and you'll be surprised in the positive sometimes.
question: will sony EVER deliver a GOOD state of play?
@Porco It already has.
Whats with the 24 hour notice for a state of play?
Kula world remastered.
realistically hoping we might see:
Witcher 3 PS5
Humanity
Max Payne 1 & 2 Remakes
strongly doubt but hoping we might see:
The Wolf Among Us 2
Playdead's new game
Dragon Age 4
Dragon's Dogma II
Panzer Dragoon II Zwei Remake
Fumito Ueda's next project
Alien: Isolation Studio’s next project
Jonathan Blow's next project
Bloodborne remaster
Half-Life: Alyx
Nier PS5
I don’t get why people still see minor games as a problem. I play 15-20 minor games a year. I play way less AAA games a year so State of Play tonight will be perfect with smaller Japanese games.
@Rob_230 that Enigma Archives Raincode game announced in the direct is a timed Switch exclusive apparently.
It’s from spike chunsoft
We actually had some good news from Nintendo’s direct today. Multiple new games were announced that aren’t even part of SoP. So I see this as a win for Sony.
@Uncharted2007 @Blackbluto I almost hesitated and missed out on buying one because the way it launched was a huge turn off, showing a logo then showing just the controller like WTF? at a time when xbox was already in hand for some lucky influencers and the look of it didn't help one bit.
@Kingleo31 we don’t even know what will be in the state of play anyway.
So let’s wait and see
@Blackbluto did you just ping yourself
The so-called "minor games" are usually the ones I'm interested in the most, so fine by me.
“Minor games” is music to my ears. They show too much of the first party AAA games that I will buy regardless.
I always expect nothing and then I get pleasantly surprised when they release awesome stuff!
The problem is people read too many sites that post fake rumors and watch videos on YouTube also with fake rumors. And when said fake rumors don’t happen , they’ll get mad. Also peoples imagination gets the best of them and they’ll expect way to much. Clearly with all the studios they are working on games , but I’d rather they work on those games then make trailers for games coming in 2024-2026
Sony said: It’s 10 games & 20min of game content focused on Japanese devs/publishers ahead of TGS. Anyone that goes in expecting something else only has themselves to blame.
Personally I’m just tuning in for Silent Hill 🤞
They were already pretty low, so I don’t think I can go much lower. I’m still looking forward to it, but I didn’t expect anything big.
@Mauzuri seriously! I can’t believe how many farm games there were.
Did you guys see that nintendo direct? Was pretty cool, I will lower my expectations for this and if they show 1 actual PS5 exclusive(not timed, not pc, not a updated port) I will consider it a success.
I think the only possible megaton I’d even hesitate to guess would be possible would be Silent Hill. If that happens they can show 19 minutes and 30 seconds of farm sims and I’d still be giddy.
At the very least I’m just hoping some nice indie games, maybe some confirmed western releases of some of the titles from the Asobu showcase in the summer.
@Neverwild um, who's thinking those games when it was stated these would be minor games? I beleive the ones you mentioned are MAJOR. So......
🤫🤫🤫
could you imagine? 😁 I'm sure he will tweet something though 😂
Most of modern gaming is pretty poor. When you have gamed as long as me you will see the crap a mile away... expectations are rarely met these days in gaming.
VR 2 can be incredible though, bringing new ways to play and to take risks with game design.
I've started back into PC gaming. It was the 90s when I last used a PC for gaming and after getting a Steam Deck I tracked down a standard RTX gfx card for my music composing PC, ten meter 2.1 HDMI lead connected to my OLED giant gaming TV and have literally been taken back by what I've been missing out on and sometimes how stripped back multi plats are on PS5/SX.
Running games like Witcher 3, Cyberpunk,Res 7,DMC5, Fallen Order and more all at better quality and performance than PS5 and SX...and i am only using a 3060 at 1400p and at times 2160p...
I was shocked to see the boost...Shadow of the tomb raider is superior on PC to console. It's opened my eyes, that's for sure.
Honestly I loved this State of Play, lots of great looking games!
@Mezzer unless you're running it alongside a XSX/PS5 version you won't even be noticing a difference. No one's spotting hey there's another blade of grass there 😂 and if you're going 120fps etc. You won't have the same details or resolution.
This article didn’t age well for me - I thoroughly enjoyed this morning’s State of Play! 😺
lol looks you guys got trolled SOP was amazing
And BOY! was he wrong. Was not lots of smaller titles... unless by smaller you mean massive AAA bangers. Great show. Shame I missed it live.
With this, the Nintendo Direct and my favourite RGG Studio Games announcements, for me this has been the greatest day of gaming news in my entire life and it isn't like anything is actually blowing my mind (still waiting for a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Yakuza game) but I just look at these showcases and I'm constantly saying yep, I want that. Like god damn, we get 3 Yakuza game announcements, technically 5 if you include the 2 Judgment games getting PC ESRB ratings, what more can I ask for, I'm literally set for the next 2 years of gaming and everything that gets announced in the future is just a bonus for me!
@naruball debatable! that being said, yesterday's event was decent!
