Update: The playable demo for Star Ocean: The Divine Force is available to download now on both PS5 and PS4. It's just over 15GB in size.
Original Story: If you're eager to take upcoming action RPG Star Ocean: The Divine Force for a spin, then you may be interested in knowing that a playable demo will arrive on the PlayStation Store tomorrow. That's the 20th September 2022 at the time of writing this article, and it'll be yet another demo from Square Enix. You can't fault the publisher for giving us a chance to play its soon-to-be-released games like this.
Hopefully you'll enjoy The Divine Force more than we did, when we got a chance to go Hands On at a recent press event. We weren't keen on the combat system and we weren't impressed with the game's visuals, but our time with the title was limited β maybe spending a few hours with this demo will put a more positive spin on our perspective.
Will you be trying the new Star Ocean before it launches in late October? Chart a course for a distant planet in the comments section below.

I know a lot of people say the demo is dead, and that demos should not be put out if it exposes the quality of the game. However, SQE is killing it with these demos, and have convinced me on more than on occasion to buy a game I would have otherwise dodged thinking it wasn't for me. And while I won't be buying this one (I say that now) I will be downloading this to try it out, and maybe it will become a sale purchase if it convinces me.
@ErrantRob Yeah, I was hesitant on Valkyrie Elysium, but the demo sold me on the game. Sure, I can see some of the problems with that game, but I definitely had fun with the demo enough to preorder the game.
Cool! Looking forward to trying it. I have a good feeling about this game.
I like this trend.
But also: how many SE RPGs are there in the next few months?!
Great!
Played the Valkyrie and WoLong Demos and they sealed the deal for me. Keep them coming
Love StarOcean, so I was never going by reviews anyway. One IP I need to check it out for myself whenever it comes out.
@Agramonte
Wo Long demo was cool but since I could never figure out blocking/parrying w/ the O button it was a lot of sneak attacks and running away. Also annoyed me that I found about 6 or 7 flag stands but only 3 let me do anything. I know it's supposed to be a challenging game but every time I found a non-functional one I was like "phew, finally" followed by "&*%". I haven't played any of the previous games in the genre besides Elden Ring which was just a horse riding site seeing sim for me.
@Voltan "how many SE RPGs are there in the next few months"
All of them. π Well that's what it seemed like between the ND and SoP. π€·ββοΈ
@ShogunRok "when we got a chance to go Hands On at a recent press event."
Is that a general "we" or a you personally "we"? Asking since Liam wrote the hands on article. I like Liam for his well rounded knowledge but I think of you as the JRPG guy.
Guess it doesn't matter, I'll be giving it a go myself, just wondering if you've had a chance to play it yet.
@rjejr Nah it was just Liam for that one. The 'we' is just our style thing!
Square Enix is killing it as of late. Nier replicant, Ff7r, ff14, triangle strategy, live a live, diofield, Valkyrie Elysium,...
Their consistent demo strategy has also been great, letting you mostly play entire prologues and transfering your save over to the full game. Way better than a 35-60 minute game trial.
Just leave it to a few joyless sobs to focus on babylons fall or the NFT talk to drag a fantastic publisher/studio through the mud.
@ShogunRok Yeah, that's what I thought, which is fine. But if Sammy starts previewing anime looking JRPG I'm completely ignoring his opinion. π
Iβm looking forward to giving this a go. I appreciate Square-Enix releasing so many demos. I enjoyed Valkyrie Elysium and The DioField Chronicle.
I haven't even started 1st departure yet alone this π£π£
I've never played a Star Ocean game before, so I will probably give this a try. Whether these demos sell me on the games, it's much appreciated anyways. Not enough companies do this for so many of their games, as it sometimes helps if I'm on the fence about a game. It also really helps when games are coming out during a really loaded period.
Really disliked the last Star Ocean game but this one looks a lot better..but your hands on didant exactly fill me with confidence..still,looking forward to the demo.
I really thought PS+ Platinum would be the end of demos for plebs. I'm glad to be proved wrong, the more the better!π
Will the save data transfer to the full release?
I'll try it tonight when i'm home, it's on my maybe radar. I certainly hope it's better than Valkyrie Elysium where playing the demo felt like meh
Well I just finished Tales of Arise so I need another game to sink my teeth into. However, unlike Tales studio, I don't see the new Star Ocean being a massive leap in quality from the last
@KaijuKaiser I loved Arise. Way better than Berseria was.
So good to see a modern Tales game with a truly happy ending.
To me Star Ocean needs that leap Tales had between Berseria and Arise. Those "doll characters" Star Ocean need to be replaced.
Played DioField demo, Valkyrie and now Star Ocean, and I ended up buying DioField and might also grab Star Ocean whereas previously I wouldnβt have even thought of getting anything at all. Star Ocean reminds me quite a lot of Xenoblade in many regards (I never played any other Star ocean game).
And the graphics are also nicer than what I saw in trailers.
@MasterVGuides The DioField demo convinced me to buy it I enjoyed it and just as the story was getting good the demo ended now I need more.
@tatsumi Same these little demos are dare I say like a drug dealer" first hit is free"
I tried the demos on ps4 and ps5.
What i found funny is that it felt like Valkyrie is a PS4 game with a ps5 port and Star ocean is a ps5 game with a ps4 port.
Star ocean is atrocious on ps4 and valkyrie runs beautifully. Star ocean looks beautiful on ps5 and valkyrie doesn't look much different.
Valkyrie did look to be the better game. Though it felt more like an action game than an RPG. Star Ocean definitely feels more RPG.
Strangely, both had lip synch issues... but at their core were enjoyable.
Itβs not showing on my ps5
@Stonecold Search the game and go on the dots in ps store to get a different version. There you should find the demo
Ok thanks will try that. Maybe I didnβt look hard enough earlier
I found it now. Thanks very much mate π
The text is ridiculously small on the PS5 demo...
@rjejr Lol... right?
That is when I turn on WeMod and make myself a GOD until I find the next save spot... I am getting old π π€£
@Agramonte All games should have Godmode for those times you just wanna wreck things. I mean how hard could the coding be?
"If Godmode = 1 then Damage = 0"
I really liked it i think i will buy this one :3
I'll be passing on the demo, too many games to choose from in October already.
(I'll only be getting Plague Tale Requiem and MAYBE Gotham Knights)
