PlayStation Productions is in full swing, with several projects underway. One of them is a movie based on Sony's long-running Gran Turismo series. It seems an odd choice for the big screen, but it's happening nonetheless, and it's attracting some notable talent.
Namely, the Gran Turismo film now has its first star, with David Harbour signed on to play a part. The actor is best known for his role as Jim Hopper in Stranger Things, but also appears in Quantum of Solace, Revolutionary Road, and more recently, Black Widow. His character in the movie will be that of a retired race car driver who teaches the main protagonist to drive.
To recap, Gran Turismo is a based-on-true-events tale about a young GT player who competed in professional in-game championships to eventually qualify to compete in real life races. It seems Harbour will play a mentor-style role. He's currently the only actor attached, though we do know Neill Blomkamp is onboard to direct the flick. It's on track for release in cinemas next August.

this is going to be worse than nfs isnt it
It's an odd choice indeed. But I heard stranger things
Hardest of Passes
So a movie about invulnerable cars that go fast. Can’t wait.
Wait how does winning in Gran Turismo qualifies you to win real races
Who is this movie for?
Wait what? Gran turismo movie?! What is this nonsense?
@zupertramp nobody who cares lol
@stvevan even EA would make hell freeze over let alone this smdh 🥱🥱
@brazzios_84 that is a understatement 😂😂😂
@DualWielding You'd be surprised, quite a few GT Esports champions have ended up forging actual motorsport careers.
@stvevan
I completely forgot that movie even existed.
I like the actor, but which race car is he fitting in?
@pegasusactual93 probably for the best that you did
@stvevan
Never even watched it, I just recall people making Breaking Bad memes for like a week when it released because Aaron Paul and then that was it.
@AdamNovice from NFTs or whatever is popular? it's not a honest living imo this is why the YouTube trending page is full of disgusting people 🙄🤢🤢🤢
@huyi If there making money out of it and it isn't hurting anyone then it's an honest job.
@BeerIsAwesome I love a good car-themed movie as much as the next guy but this sounds to be more like The Wizard but with GT instead of Mario. Guess I'm just not sure how many car guys want to watch an eSports movie. "Man did you see the way he drove that virtual car? Sick!"
Mostly I'm just confused what it's about lol.
Making movies from video games is so aggressively stupid and cringe.
@Arnna this is odd? Horizon, GOW, and TLOU would make great movies? I think that's a broad stroke that's not at all true. Gran Turismo though? Yeah, I'm not sure how you make this exciting, but I'm open to it.
I liked Uncharted more than I thought I would.
Awesome! I hope he plays the bad mechanic that doesn’t fix the FFB, then gets promoted to CEO & raises the prices of all the cars.
7.8 IMDB
@Omnistalgic the track record of making great films from video games is pretty much nil. The problem is they are completely different mediums.
Is this going to be like “Cars” but with a more mature theme?
The main theme song for this best be that '79 smash hit by Gary Newman.
i love hopper!
I'm actually really excited for this. Love Neil Blomkamp's films, love the visuals and dilapidated look. Story? Probably hit and miss
@BeerIsAwesome yeah true. Especially in China who Hollywood pretty heavily caters to, for better or worse, so it makes sense in that regard. Guess I'm just wondering if it's a movie for gearheads or eSports fandom or a weird combination of both. And does that work?
Hey I thought Uncharted would be an absolute bomb but I was wrong there so what do I know. I'm not in the 18-30 demo anymore so it's entirely possible I'm completely out of touch.
Talking cars yeah?
@Pikki Maybe someone will do a parody of that, but doubt it'll be in the actual movie.
@pukana If you read the entire article, they already state he's going to be an ex-racer who fills a mentor role for the main character.
@KidBoruto sorry you missed my sarcasm. I did read the whole article & my comment was tongue in cheek.
If you understood the current state of the game & what PD have done (or haven’t) it might’ve made more sense
@pukana My bad, was in a hurry when reading thru comments!
