Valkyrie Elysium marks the return of the cult-classic Valkyrie series of action RPGs and is set to launch on PS5 and PS4 on 29th September. A demo for the game is available now on the PlayStation Store, and we went hands-on with the title, and think it's shaping up to be a pleasant surprise.
Another pleasant surprise, then, is the addition of a new game mode, which is being added to the game in early November. It's called Hilde's Vengeance, and you will play as the mysterious Hilde herself, servant of the apocalyptic wolf himself, Fenrir.
In addition, the Seraphic Gate will return, an optional super-dungeon that has appeared throughout the series. The Very Hard and Valkyrie difficulty modes will also be added to the game, for all you masochists out there.
Are you looking forward to Valkyrie Elysium? Will you be picking this one up? Prepare for this particular incarnation of Ragnarok in the comments section below.

Can't complain with free content!
I hadn't heard of this series before this game was revealed and the demo really surprised me. I think I'll be picking this up but it might have to wait until next year. As with many people I have too many games on the go as it is with many more soon to release 😅
If I had at the very least finished xenoblade 3 by now (which I haven't, far from it....) I might have gone for it now. Love the concept and combat 👍
I loved the originals and the demo didn't disappoint. It feels like a PS2 game, but in a very good way. The combat is just some good hack n slash fun, and this extra content sounds very nice too.
This will be nice palette cleanser before God of War.
Valkyrie Elysium
DioField
Tactics Ogre
Octopath Traveler II
Forspoken
FF VII Rebirth
Crisis Core
FF XVI
It feels like Square Enix have gone back to basics and are playing a blinder atm.
I should try out the demo, looks like a game I can get into.
Demo was alright. Pretty rough and needs polishing though. Regardless, really tempted to pick it up. Combat was smooth and fun!
@Shepherd_Tallon
It's really good, i geel SQE needed to do something, I think they were relying on FF online probably a little too much, but the wider audience doesn't have time for MMO'S, but I also hope that this isn't a quantity over quality thing
@Uromastryx Yes fair point. I was especially worried that DioField would amount to nothing more than a schedule filler, but so far the feedback I've seen is mostly positive -
An average story with fun strategy gameplay.
Hope the demo was an early build it was rough but had promise.
Played enough of the demo to know I’ll be buying it. Didn’t finish it as don’t want any spoilers.
But oh boy, that Star Ocean demo… has to be the weirdest looking character models I’ve seen in the past decade.
I'm going to pass on this one. Combat was kinda fun, but the map was just barren, I spent more time breaking crates for crystals than actually fighting.
@HeroYoshiko They spent way too much time animating the insides of their mouths for that Star Ocean demo. Which probably should have started AFTER Ray landed on the planet b/c while I like a good long JRPG opening I could have watched that on Youtube, I play a demo to, well, play it. I stopped playing once we got to the ruins.🤷 I'm ok w/ the weird graphics for the most part, but they are a bit weird.
@rjejr I haven't played Star Ocean since Last Hope and after this demo, I still may wait a bit before picking this up. The demo wasn't bad but I only got to see a glimpse of the battle system and its functions.
Sounds like a great update! Pumped to play this one eventually. I hope this and DioField are in the Black Friday sales for Buy 2 Get 1 Free. Interested in both but not at full price. It’s weird they’re both released a week or so apart then we have Crisis Core in December. So much great content being pushed out. Love it!
There's some really weird takes here. People who were hitting crates instead of advancing the game and people saying it looked rough without explaining why.
The game looked great. The combat was great. What is considered rough i suppose is the art of the game. It's supposed to look like a water painting.
I don't understand why people were hitting crates though. 😅
I tried the demo and while the combat was fun, I really didn't like the Naruto run style the main character had because it just didn't feel right for the setting, and the game world just felt really linear and empty... not sure if this is how the final game will be but if it is then it's not so exciting for me. Granted I didn't finish the demo, and of course it IS just a demo so maybe the game will be bigger and better on release...
I’ve been playing this game for a few days and it is one of the better gaming experiences I have had in a few years.
The story is solid enough. The gameplay is quite solid. The art style in unique in a good way. The blend of open zones and linear paths makes for a nice break from massive open world adventures.
The protagonist really opens up about 20% through. The human assistants she can summon are interesting. The nemesis is quite intriguing. The only lackluster character at 25% is Odin but that very well could change by end game - especially with the coming free add ons.
This is not a PS2 or PS3 like game as some have said. Anyone who played games during that time would clearly recognize this. Is it Gow Ragnarok? No… but that’s not what you can expect at this price point. It’s an AA+ game and we’ll worth any JRPG fans time.
I am taking my sweet time to play through the main missions and side quests with a keen eye towards new game plus. I will definitely grind this game to max out my character and all her weapons. The scoring system rewards those who maximize their potential.
@Nem People are so used to crates holding useful items that they must destroy them all in every game they play.
