Overwatch 2 is just around the corner, and Blizzard marked the occasion recently with a fun launch trailer. It shows off characters old and new with a mix of gameplay and CG, and we're sure fans will be excited to finally get their hands on the shooter come 4th October. Interestingly, though, it looks like some heroes will be gated off until you've put in a fair amount of time.
In a new blog post, Blizzard explains the way the game will introduce its characters and modes to new players. Essentially, new Overwatch 2 players won't have access to everything from the start, in an effort to show all the game has to offer in a gradual way. Firstly, the game will introduce all its modes fairly quickly, as well as the ability to chat in-game. Then, over the course of 100 matches, the playable characters will slowly become available one by one. This is so players can get to grips with each hero, rather than be overwhelmed by the 35-strong roster from the start.
It's worth pointing out not every player will have to go through this process; it'll only apply to accounts made on 4th October or after. In other words, if you have an Overwatch account, you'll be able to access everything as normal. Friends who party up together won't be restricted by these measures, either. The game will be free-to-play, though, meaning a lot of new players, so this ultimately sounds like a smart idea.

From a person who plays Paladins, this is childs play.
I will say it again, I like unlocking heroes since it forces me to spend time with the cast of character. It also keeps me motivated to play more matches.
I mean this just sounds like Smash Bros Ultimate and other games. That doesn't seem like too high of a limit to achieve them all.
I remember playing OW for the first time and having to pick the same person intentionally because it was so daunting to try anyone else out in a match for the first time.
Smash bros ultimate did the same, and that was a full priced game
100 games is peanuts for a game like this. If I were into online shooters I'd easily do that in a week, probably less. But I still expect huge complaints on Twitter and articles conjured up on the bacl of it 😆
Unlocking things in games is fun. I’ll typically skip games that have everything unlocked from the start or I end up dropping off of them early because there’s no meaningful carrot for me to chase.
:Laughs in Rainbow Six 6 and Apex Legends:
What is an Overwatch account? Or did you mean Battle.net account?
I honestly don't mind 🤷♂️
Honestly, who is this game even for? It has hardly any differences from the first game except they're just slapping on all the baggage that comes with playing a "free" video game. This game just feels like neutering with extra steps.
That’s pretty good tbh. Less than 3 matches to unlock another character. Also most players will probably just find 2-3 characters they like & try them out a bunch & then move on or stick with them. Not much of a grind really.
F2P is a poison on the games industry and people are being conditioned into willfully ingesting it.
@frankmcma I guess it means that if you logged into overwatch before it became Overwatch 2
@rachetmarvel Yeah anyone complaining about this requirement has never played a similar game before.
