The long-anticipated PS5 upgrade for Disney + has launched today, allowing subscribers to stream in 4K HDR quality at last. One of the bigger complaints when Sony’s new-gen console launched was that the app for Disney’s streaming service was technically running in PS4 backwards compatibility, limiting the quality of its output. That’s now been rectified.
“A key part of our global expansion strategy is to meet consumers wherever they are, which is why we’re excited to enhance both Disney+ and Star+ for PS5 users,” beamed Jerrell Jimerson, EVP of Product & Design, Disney Streaming. “The ability to support 4K HDR video streaming on the platform will also improve the viewing experience for fans.”
If you’ve already got Disney + installed, then you will need to transition to the Media tab of the PS5 homepage and download the native client to experience the abovementioned benefits. It shouldn’t take you any longer than Pixar short to get started, though, and it’ll be worth it once you witness your favourite movies and shows in all of their 4K HDR glory.

Any advantage to using this over a Smart TV app that already has 4K support?
Nice one, Sammy.
I'd have just been waiting for the current app to update. Never thought to download a new version.
Looks to be a much smaller file size too.
@nessisonett
Probably not and if you don't have a 4K TV there's very little point in having a PS5 (or you're certainly not using it to its full potential) so Disney Plus app seems pretty pointless really
@nessisonett Just speaking anecdotally, my 4K TCL tv has the 4K Disney+ app, but the tv runs like garbage. The PS5 is much faster to load and navigate. Not really a difference in terms of image quality, but far superior performance makes a huge difference for me.
@Shstrick That’s a good point actually, the onboard OS is rubbish so at least the PS5 one wouldn’t freeze as often.
Just grabbed Deadpool 1 and 2 physical 4K from HMV a real physical store where you physically walk through the doors on a 2 for £20 deal. That's really good for sealed physical 4K. Yh I don't like streaming other than youtube. While I'm aware streaming is so convenient for so many at least I don't get a monthly bill every month when well over 90% of its content don't care for, same % with every other streaming sub. Don't care for most of Disney Marvel movies other than Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool which I now own all on physical 4K. Star Wars never really been a fan of. Oh and I actually really own all my fav movies with no worries of them ever leaving
Well my TV has 4K with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos when using Disney+
Step down on PS5 (last I checked)
"it’ll be worth it once you witness your favourite movies and shows in all of their 4K HDR glory."
Great...except I can experience them in all their 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos glory elsewhere.
I mean, great that PlayStation is finally getting a native PS5 app; but PS5 still lacks Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support for apps.
And no, Microsoft didn't pay for some exclusivity for the technology on consoles despite what you might hear (both Microsoft and Dolby itself have come out to say so).
Alas, I don't see Dolby Atmos ever happening on PS5 as it competes with Sony's own 3D Audio technology.
@Beerheadgamer82 buying movies still feels special. If your playing movies on PS5 switch your audio to Bitstream and be prepared to be wowed (if you’ve a soundbar or cinema system).
@GamingFan4Lyf wow well said! I’m a lover of Dolby Vision and Atmos and disgusted PS5 just ignores them.
You can get Dolby Atmos on Blu Rays discs but not streaming. Why, Sony why?
Hang on - wasn't there already a category on there that selects 4K HDR titles? I remember it being a very small selection.
Yay, just in time for the black and white marvel werewolf movie!
@Luigia have a separate Sony 4K player purchased before getting a PS5 which now possibly extends my disc PS5 life a bit. Have a pretty average tower speaker which is obviously far superior to crappy TV speakers. Unfortunately not experienced any Dolby yet but I have noticed 4K is just a much better sound overall, even improvements over the 1080 Blurays. Have no idea what's the best budget way to experience Dolby, its something I'm very interested in but dunno where to start tbh and budget might be an issue?
Well that’s one more reason to own a PS5 I guess 😊
My only problem with the original Disney+ PS app has finally been fixed!
Is this UK only, no update/new client for me in the US
Alright, took them only 2 years. What a joke.
@Beerheadgamer82 well that's cool ,I think disney plus is great ,I haven't bought a film for over ten years ,I have my own digital library with hundreds of films on a harddrive, super sleek ,without those daft boxes cluttering up the place ,but each to their own
@Nintendo4Sonic I don't think people where that fussed to be fair.
@ErikR68
I am in the same boat. It's a shame the app wouldn't just update to the latest version instead of having to delete the old app and reinstall it again. Not many people will know to do this or go through the effort.
Where's Paramount+ on PS5, you cowards???
@tallythwack The XBox One S and One X already had Disney + with 4K resolution and HDR. What was offered on PS5 was a pure joke.
I bought a new TV this year, so I'm not reliant to the PS5 anymore.
with stupid energy prices ill stick to the tv version. one less device on.
It’s a nice to have but most people will use an app like this on their Tv.
Delighted about this. My media remote didnt work properly on the PS4 app, but is working perfectly with the new app. Thanks for the heads-up! I also would have missed this. Presumably they will remove access to the old app soon
@Beerheadgamer82 I’ve a budget Sony SF-150 soundbar and when changing audio settings from PCM to Bitstream when watching Blu-Ray movies that support Dolby Atmos, the sound increase is phenomenal!
Hope it works for you
@Luigia It probably wouldn't hurt for Sony to add like a "Passthrough" option for apps to allow for Atmos even if it means that Atmos is only available for supported streaming services and not games.
@Beerheadgamer82 Vizio M-Series Quantum TVs offer both Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Not sure if the new M-series does 120Hz, though - mine does not.
Mine does support VRR between 40 - 60Hz (as well as AMD Freesync, which I think goes lower) and ALLM - but alas that doesn't do any good for these 40 fps Modes that Sony has been doing despite having no problems doing VRR at 40fps because Sony requires both VRR AND 120 Hz to make it possible.
I know it seems odd to have VRR only go up to 60 Hz since most Series X/PS5 games have a rock solid 60 fps modes but it does help in some instances. For example, the Series X version of Tales of Arise had only minor hiccups when running in Resolution Mode, so the VRR lets you run in that mode without distractions - no need to drop resolution for a smooth presentation. It was essential for Elden Ring to look smooth! Deathloop is another one where VRR helps to run the game in Resolution Mode to continue looking smooth.
Bottom line: VRR up to 60fps-only is good for running games where Favor Resolution options have hiccups.
But my Vizio M55Q7 has an amazing picture and is a solid budget-friendly option if you want Dolby Vision and some HDMI 2.1 features.
What a bunch of whiny little b1tches in this comment section.
@GamingFan4Lyf have LG nanocell AI thinQ 49nano86, dolby vision IQ, dolby atmos, Bluetooth surround ready, 2.1 VRR 120hz. Not OLED though
Great upgrade this, albeit whilst also highlighting the painfully thick decision to still not have a Dolby Vision software update on the console.
@Woods-PS love your reply, pure comedy 🤡👍🏻
If my smart TV didn't already have 4K Disney+ support, I'd be tempted by this for sure.
