Need for Speed is a franchise that’s been in need of a facelift for some time, and new game Unbound is bound to split opinion. While the title’s not officially due to be announced until later this week, Japanese retailer Neowing has prematurely uploaded the first PS5 assets from the Criterion developed racer – and it sure looks different.
As previously reported, the release is aiming for an anime-esque look, and it’s reflected by cel-shaded character models and exaggerated wheel sparks and visual flourishes. The store currently has the title pegged for a 2nd December, 2022 release date, which tracks with previous rumours we’ve reported on.
What do you make of this ambitious new style? Has the series finally found a bit of personality, or is it just hideous? Remember, a debut trailer is due imminently, so all will be revealed in the coming days.

I love it, personally. Will be interesting to see how it all looks in motion, but I'm in.
I actually really like the artstyle. The characters could look a bit better though.
But it's an EA game so they'll probably f--k it up somehow.
I can can imagine the immediately annoying voiceovers already.
I like it! Its fresh and may go well with non-sim profile of the NFS series. I'll definitely be interested to give it a try
This art style looks fantastic
Looks like it has potential. I’m very interested to see how this turns out. Really need another arcade style racer.
It reminds me of the first time Underground came out and how it was so different. I’d probably check this out to be honest
Think the franchise is having quite the identity crisis , also the art direction doesn't scream next gen only
@Would_you_kindly Not every next-gen game has to have realistic graphics to justify being next-gen exclusive, but then again I do also wonder why this isn't on last-gen platforms.
There must be a typo here, it’s Unbounded.
Initial D!
DOOORIFTUUUU
Can you imagine the voice overs and micro transactions awaiting us with these fortnite looking characters?!
This is gonna be a cringe worthy Garbage live service game.
@HotGoomba I'd have expected for a game that's skipping last gen to be more about photo realism although I do see reflections in the puddles so it will probably have ray tracing I can't say that's something I really care about
The character models are eh. But I dig the car visuals. Hopefully it's fun to drive and the races are thrilling. I haven't liked a Need for Speed game in a long time.
Yeah... I do like the smoke effects but the characters..., I need to see more of it.
You can never go wrong with anime. I might have to check this out.
Gotta say I quite like the look for this.
Interested to see more
Artstyle is a step up compared to previous few unimaginative sequels. I just hope it also plays well.
Since starting NFS Heat from Essential last week the servers have been super dodgy, wouldn't even let me purchase a car at one point despite playing in solo mode. Heat and Payback are switch your brains off and just go arcade fast. Don't much care for what type of art style it goes for as I've never really cared for its characters or story. Prefer track racing closer to sim but there's never enough of those on consoles other than GT7. Project Cars 3 has been ruined, apparently plays and feels nothing like PC1 and 2
Gives me vibes of an old PS2 game called 'Juiced'
@FOXHOUND_MGS5 great game as well as juiced 2 hot import Nights hope they get added to ps plus premium they were both on psp as well
@Beerheadgamer82 Personally I think they fixed Project Cars with v3. 1& 2 were unplayable with a controller (or you maybe had to fiddle with various settings) and I'm never gonna buy a wheel. Games like GT7/Dirt/F1 may be arguably better or faster with a wheel but equal fun can be had with just a controller - no fiddling required.
Why SMS felt the need to dumb the game down to achieve passable controller handling is another topic.
I like the art style. I’ve never been much of a racing guy, but Need For Speed Most Wanted is a game that had me addicted bad. I’ve yet to find another racing game to grab me like that one.
it's ***** awesome imo
100% buy
@Cycologist only use pad myself as the wheels I want are always out of my price range. Never had any issues with PC1 and 2 on pad and got well over 80% of both games trophies easily. PC3 staying well away from like the plague lol after all those below average reviews. Project Cars went from close to sim racing to more arcade colorful nonsense, that's the turn off for me. Something like NFS or Grid I don't mind cause they've always meant to be arcade racers to begin with
I'm usually all in on cell shaded graphics but the characters are a bit ugly. The cars actually look pretty cool in this style though and that's what matters more so I'm intrigued. Let's see how the trailer turns out.
Weeb For Speed.
I'mma hafta see it in motion. I feel like they were shooting for a 2D-look to its cel-shaded characters a la Guilty Gear, but it's just not as well done.
I almost feel like it would have been even more striking if the entire game looked like that. Cel shade the cars, too, and make a truly striking racing game.
I dont like anime. Bye Bye NFS. Hope You'll get financial hit
Need For Weeb
Like the look of this, seriously need more arcade racers, just played through split second again.
Looks fine to me
Looks a lot like Auto Modelista for PS2 and GameCube. That was a great game and looked amazing for the time so I am excited for this. I have to be honest I lost interest in need for speed years ago but this one has me interested
Wish they would bring back burnout
Ooookay, I see you NFS. I hope this takes place in a Miami-esk city!
Excellent! Too many games go for realism, its great to get more with a stylish aesthetic, and im now very interested in seeing more...
Hmmmmm... Not high hopes.
I'll wait for the trailer. No high hopes though
Unbound? Like the Ridge Racer game?
@Titntin NFS has never been realism though. There's literally a complete lack of realism sim racers on console. The huge difference of the amount of arcade racers compared to close to realism sim racers is huge. It feels like there's hundreds of arcade racers on consoles over the past decade compared to barely a dozen of close to sim racers on consoles over the past decade
@FinneasGH It's a Criterion game, so that'll probably be minimal. Criterion games (Burnout, NFSMW and NFSHP) don't usually have voice overs, besides those silky introductions in Paradise and Most Wanted.
Looks promising. Reminds me of Underground a little bit.
So it's basically cell shaded NFS Underground? 🤔
NFSxFortnite=ass
Looks different. Its all about the handling though, which they just haven't got right in a long while. I do miss the old racers though, this, PGR and midnight were some classics!
I guess it fits NFS. Not for me, though.
Looks worth checking into on EA Access down the road.
Not bad can't wait to see it in action.
I honestly don't hate it as much as I thought I would. The art style makes me think of inertial drift if anyone here besides me that might have played that.
@Beerheadgamer82 Im discusing the aesthetic and thought that was clear?
I'm delighted they are not going for a realistic look and are choosing style instead. Its NFS, no one would expect anything other than an arcade racer.
Theres a bigger market for arcade style fun racers compared to sim titles, and thats definately reflected in the balance of titles. Im a fan of both 😀
I love the art style!!
If gameplay looks good, I am down to buy day 1.
I really enjoyed pgr4 on the xbox 360 and it was easily one of the best racers i've played. I liked the mix of real cars and arcade handling and i dont think another racer has come that close but i'd better add in my opinion. Now if E.A. and criterion could recreate NFS black and have pgr4's handling with these visuals i think they would have a stormer but please no hipster, snowflake, woke generation storys as its just whince inducing..
This just isn't need for speed and need for speed hasn't been need for speed since most wanted.
Honestly all need for speed needed to do was go back to its roots and make a next gen need for speed underground 3 and I'd be in. Im not into the anime look, unfortunately.
@Would_you_kindly "I'd have expected for a game that's skipping last gen to be more about photo realism"
🤣 That's like saying, With the advent of Blu-ray I expected all cartoons to become live action films.
Criterion? EA merged part of Codemasters into them? Really high hopes here.
The visual style of the game is not my problem here, in fact, I like it, I have already tried games with that style and they are very good, what makes me doubtful is the return of the Underground style, and no, it is not that I am in Against this, however, for me, in the Underground, I noticed that the game focused too much on the concept of broadly modifying the visuals of the vehicles and also, giving a not very interesting story (in my opinion) and literally almost leaving racing aside, although it did have good racing (especially when they added the NFS-style Drag), but, I repeat, everything was focused on how the vehicles looked and nothing else.
I hope that here they give more focus to racing, of course, without forgetting the taste of many, car tuning.
The only thing I don't even expect is the soundtrack, good songs, but not "suitable" for racing...
@Titntin oh fair enough I thought you were saying NFS used to be realism and this new NFS is more arcade. Absolutely arcade racers are more popular cause they feel more of an actual video game than the close to sim racers do and therefore is way more easier for gamers to get into. I'd guess with nearly all racers being arcade back in the 80s and 90s due to limitations in tech not being able to make really believable compelling sim racer like they can today really helps in the arcade racer space today. Also on top of that I'm guessing it would be easier even today for devs to make a fun arcade racer than it would be for them to make a more challenging but fun close to sim racer, everything would have to be much more precise in its approach while trying to make it fun which I'm guessing can be more tricky to achieve with a sim racer
having a hard time understanding why people are excited for another EA dud? this is just what they do. there has not been a good nfs game since criterion was disbanded 10 years ago after nfs most wanted.
