Before Bungie hit it big with Halo, it had another sci-fi first-person shooter series called Marathon — which originally released all the way back in 1994, for the Apple Macintosh (how time flies!). Now, almost 30 years later, the developer is apparently planning on bringing Marathon back.
This is according to the reliable folks over at Insider Gaming, citing anonymous sources. This new Marathon project is supposed to be a three-player, extraction-based shooter, with a focus on completing missions and, er, extracting in one piece. Team up, take on a job, grab any loot, complete your objectives, and then get out of there alive — the usual.
The report also suggests that it's also going to be heavily reliant on live service elements, with "seasonal rewards and progression" being a "huge" part of the experience. Not much of a surprise, given Bungie's much more recent history with Destiny.
What do you make of this? Are you at all familiar with the original Marathon games? Try not to reveal your age in the comments section below.

That sounds fun actually! I'm getting tired of Destiny, but bungie is a great developer. I'll for sure check it out as I love these types of games.

Not my cup of tea. Wish more devs provide decent single-players experience or some adaptable co-op/multiplayer options, like Division series: you can play solo even though it is harder, or team up with friends, if you like that.
So many games these days are like ‘remember that game which was big on Twitch last year, why not play a carbon copy of it developed by a AAA dev!’
@Tomato_Goose Yes, but unfortunately Sony bought Bungie for „Live Service“, so we will get exactly this.
YES to bringing it back, but NO to it being in this form.
I loved Marathon. Gave me my first ever jump scare in a game. Had to pull a level to open a door but the lever was situated in a small claustrophobic room. When you turned around there was this floating figure, just inches from your face. Great stuff. Fond memories.
Also the days when Apple made great professional design tailored computers. Unlike the consumer orientated trash they make these days.
I remember playing these games in the 90's while listening to NIN and Aphex Twin... good times!
Live service means no, no matter what for me. The core design of a game intended to fit this model is so limiting, cosmetic and illusory progression focused and predatory in nature that it literally makes me feel like a gullible moron if I play it.
Just not happening. I think the more these games become the norm the stronger the push back will become. Eventually the schemes will break aside from those already embedded, just as crypto and NFT's have.
Well makes sense since they can't use Halo.
I played Marathon after getting into Halo and playing Bungie's back catalogue (Oni is still officially awesome, one of my fav early PS2 titles)
Marathon had such a cool vibe to it. A revival would be very interesting. Consider my curiosity well and truly piqued.
It's interesting seeing a lot of developers making Escape From Tarkov-likes, but what most of the devs have forgotten about is the player ran economy and having this be a traditional GAAS shows that there will most likely not be an in-game economy. Tarkov-likes have tons of potential, but I don't think anything will match the intense fun that Tarkov provides. Also the sheer about of detail that BattleState Games has for military gameplay with actually having access to licensed prototype weapons shows how much they care about the game.
@PetrifiedPete what’s your point
@Max_the_German if this is true it will have been in development before the purchase, plus live service is Bungies bread and butter they'd be going that route with or without Sony.
