Sony has recruited Andrea Perez, a former honcho at Nike, to lead its PlayStation marketing initiatives. The ex-Global Vice President for Jordan Women’s will assume the role as Senior Vice President of Brand, Product, and Services marketing, where she’ll oversee campaigns relating to PS5, PSVR2, PS Plus, the PS Store, and much more. A pretty cool job, then.
“One of the things that makes Nike successful is the relentless pursuit of the voice of the athlete,” Perez told Adweek. “[Sony’s] marketing is focused on the excitement, joy, and emotion that gamers feel when playing their favourite games on PlayStation [and] there is no person around me in the team that isn’t thinking about the player first.”
While many enthusiasts would argue that PlayStation’s engagement with hardcore fans has fallen off a cliff over the past couple of years, its mainstream marketing efforts are still outrageously good – we imagine the organisation will have some pretty big things in store for God of War Ragnarok next month. And with PSVR2 right around the corner, it’s clearly an exciting period for the marketing team.

I’m not convinced that anybody wants to hear the ‘voice of the gamer’.
man is sony trolling or what? like , i just can’t … i’m gonna just grab my popcorn for this one 😂
"there is no person around me in the team that isn’t thinking about the player first."
Apart from Jim Ryan.....
Who cares who Sony hires to market they’re PlayStation products come on gaming news must be so dry right now 😂.
I was really hoping this person's name was really Nike Honcho...figured the subtitle gave it away but still hopes dashed.
this is embarassing Sony! Playstation is headed for the dumpster. this company keeps shooting themselves in the foot.
Outrageous!!!!! Rabble rabble rabble. Jim Ryan wears shoes made out of puppies!!
I misread that as "Sony headbutts" lol
@IndoorEnthusiast Jim is so evil he drink his tea out of his tea cup with his pinky finger up 😈.
Sometimes you wonder just what kind of finishing move some people are pulling off that others can't, making them more qualified for honcho positions...
Woo! Child labor confirmed!
Just do it! 😈
The fans: “Sony needs better marketing!”
Sony: “Let’s hire a guy who knows marketing to work on our marketing…”
The fans: “Sony’s dumb! They don’t know what the fans want!”
@AhmadSumadi Yeah, Sony will definitely be all sunshine and rainbows after this.
Like the Air Max i think Playstation's marketing bubble has already burst.
@Shad361 Who knows better you why not ask if you can do it what are your refrences?
must have done a brilliant job marketing Womens Jordan
never heard of them till now
@warrenflatt
Why?
Maybe she'll bread a generation of "controllerheadz", who buy a bunch of controllers but never use them.
PS need a mascot like in the PS3 days. What was that man in those adverts name?? Kevin something?? Feel like I should remember this
@nessisonett Most of the voices of the players would be bleeped out anyway...
If they want to market themselves to me they need to shut up about live action and reverse their censorship policies.
I think Sony has definitely become more boring since Jim Ryan is at the helm. That said, when I am thinking about the more fun times, it is usually about in person events like PSX which always felt like a bit more intime, PS "family" event for the fans first and foremost. The pandemic obviously prevented that but it would be cool to bring it back. Also, the State of Plays, while a good format imo, feel a little impersonal without anyone of the representatives showing up.
Jim Ryan business philosophy seems to me be about how make to Playstation a brand to be on level with the Apples and the Amazons. He want PlayStation to be a logo and name that everybody knows. Anything that could risk that ultimate plan, business are build upon making ultimate plans for future that doesn’t exist, throw away and forget about.
A very interesting hire.
There's been a lot of change and streamlining at PlayStation over the last few years, plus things like Ryan's push to focus on indies again, acquisitions and investments, doubling down on third party partnerships in Japan, a focus on hiring serious talent and then retaining that talent, a re-emphasis on single player narrative driven games as well as expanding the stable to include GAAS titles, not to mention the upcoming VR headset.
A lot has been happening.
This hire makes me wonder/blatantly speculate if it's not all starting to take shape now, with the next big step perhaps being a new advertising campaign to really kick the generation off now that lockdowns are over and supply chain issues are not as bad as they have been.
@thefourfoldroot1 Might want to tell Nintendo that too but I bet they don't get anywhere near the amount of outrage as Sony does.
@WadeIsInsane Retired? They found him in bed with Nintendo (probably a 3DS). The betrayal!
He was never heard from again, but if I was an investigator I'd start by checking the landfills where they dumped a few million PSP Go's around the same time.
@AhmadSumadi
Your mistake my friend, is to think that comments here are made by Sony fans!
This site attracts a lot of visits from people just looking to throw muck, and they found a home here.
Hiring a guy to help them market more effectively is neither big news or an issue any gamer should get the strops about, but the entitled shouty crowd seem to think they know best how to run a major corporation. It would be funny if it weren't indicative of how stupid many are...
@WadeIsInsane that’s it! Those were great adverts. Shame it had to end. Wasn’t it because the actor used the character for a Nintendo ad or something?
@Perturbator ahh yes knew it was something to do with Nintendo
@AdamNovice
Yeah, I see they have followed Sony’s lead now. Pitiful and disrespectful
@warrenflatt bunch of nonsense with no evidence
Simple…
Get ride of whiney hiney in charge
Make games backwards compatible
Stop with the remakes of 3 year old games
I've been playing PlayStation since I was 5 years old in 1996. Over 20 years later I'm still with PlayStation loving my PS5 but I'll be honest Jim Ryan has really dropped the ball. He seems more interested in PlayStation competing with Apple then actually focusing on the players. Herman Hulst isn't bad but with Jim Ryan in control it feels arbitrary.
PlayStation gamers need more games to play on PS5. Not cross gen titles, or remastered cash grabs, we NEED true PS5 exclusives that show how amazing the console is. Happy gaming ✌️
