Bungie is concerned that PS5 players are inadvertently playing the PS4 version of Destiny 2, and has gently reminded players to check which iteration of the game they are running.
The friendly nudge came during the company's weekly blog update, fittingly called This Week at Bungie. Amidst the usual list of tweaks and announcements was the fairly surprising directive, with the company picking up on the fact that a "notable number of PS5 players are playing the PS4 version of Destiny 2 on their current-generation consoles".
Now look, we may or may not have been guilty of doing this once or twice ourselves, particularly back when the PS5 first launched. Sony's messaging around this aspect of the platform hasn't always been great, but at least now, the PS5 version of a game is downloaded by default upon purchasing a game.
But imagine the wonderment of someone who has been playing Destiny 2 for dozens, hundreds or even thousands of hours, realising they could have been playing the same game at a vastly improved frame rate, with improved graphical fidelity. Or maybe they are perfectly content the way they are. In any case, check to make sure you are playing the correct version of Destiny 2. The difference is as vast as the space between stars.
Be honest, were you playing the PS4 version of Destiny 2 this whole time? We promise we won't make fun. Pour your heart out in the safest space around, in the comments section below.

I know this was a remaster of an older PS4 game (or remake whatever the difference is) but speaking in more general terms, if developers would put an end to all these cross gen releases then this wouldn't be an issue at all.
I could understand it when the PS5 first launched but now almost 2 years later it's time to start focusing on next Gen and let the PS4 die gracefully
"But Smart Delivery is just a fancy name and nothing else"
I wasn't playing it in the first place so no loss here.
I know of people who do this in order to run the game off a external hard drive.
@Member_the_game it's not an issue at all on Xbox as it only installs the version that matches the console you have.
Thankfully it's better on PS5 these days then it was, it was very annoying at launch, especially with upgrades from PS4 discs.
To be honest I see no reason as to why PS4 versions are even available to download if you own the PS5 version
@Member_the_game PS4 is Sonys cash cow and will still be developed for until 2025+. Blame the accountants and a 130M install base
@carlos82 perfectly worded 👍🏻
I'm one of those people that play the PS4 version on PS5. My reason for doing so is due to an annoying lighting issue that occurs on the PS5 version where shadows from point light sources disappear randomly in gameplay. It can make the game look very ugly. The PS4 Pro version does not have this issue so I stick with that version.
Here is an album that shows the issue on PS5: https://imgur.io/a/1tTBmLC
Opening a game menu then returning to the game restores the missing shadows which the album shows.
I think another reason why this is happening is coz the PS5 version is more than twice as big at over 100gb, while the PS4 version is just over 40gb. I’d prefer to play the PS5 version but don’t wanna take up all that extra space.
@Member_the_game
I've resolved this issue by not buying a PS5 yet lol. Sony is the most guilty out of all the studio's and I absolutely do not miss a PS5, that's for sure.
Still slowly chipping away at my PS4 backlog in peace
@Luigia
Of that 130m install base how many of those consoles are actually still in use?
I for one bought 3 PS4's..... My first one broke so that's a no, 2nd one I gave to my daughter (currently gathering dust in her bedroom) when I upgraded to a PS4 Pro and I sold the PS4 Pro when I got my PS5
You could also make the same install base argument when any new console launches but this cross gen thing was never a thing before when upgrading from NES to SNES or PS1 to PS2 or even PS3
I just find it really frustrating when you spend all that money on the latest console only to find you really didn't need to bother as they still release virtually all the same games on the old one.
As I said in my original post, I could accept it for the first few months when PS5 launched but now almost 2 years down the road it's time to move on
@Member_the_game how would that have worked in this particular instance? There is no destiny 3...
@Cutmastavictory
I never said there was, I said in my first post " speaking in more general terms"
@carlos82 Probably Sony trying to annoy you to get you to stop buying the ps4 disc and buy the ps5 version for an extra 10$.
I tried to get into that franchise. Into that game.
I really tried.
I bought the first one (the all DLC edition package) and did all the story content I could, just to catch up.
Then I started the second one.
Only to find out that half of the content had been removed by Bungie, for obscur reasons. Problem is : this content was story-related, and a necessary one for beginners in this universe, like myself.
To sum up : this vault thing has kept me out of this game. Which is a shame, cause the few hours I played it (twenty or something) were really good.
But I don't want to watch youtube videos of deleted content to understand the overall story of a game.
This vault thing is just insane.
@Bobobiwan The vaulting thing is one of the worst things to happen. I spent over £100 on destiny 2 and expansions and can only play about 2% of what I purchased. Its crazy how Bungie seem to avoid backlash for it!
@bindiana They did get backlash for it... but not the amount of backlash they should've gotten. I'm assume the reason for that is due to the fact the only people playing destiny now are either Destiny/Bungie fanatics or they never owned the content in the first place.
@BoldAndBrash Still waiting for that must have PS5 title and after two years, I'm still waiting.
Until then, life's pretty good with an SSD equipped Pro and the backlog isn't shrinking fast enough!
@Luigia 130m? They stopped giving numbers at 117m
I'm playing PS4 version on purpose, just wanted to say that. PS5 version is not significantly better, in any way that matters and uses my precious SSD space. Wouldn't be surprised if I'm not alone in this.
Sony's handling of both version's accessibility has gone from bad to great (PS5 version by default, easily accessible PS4 version).
I've been playing with thought trying some Destiny, but everything was smashed to the ground when everybody said most single-player story was removed.
I've done it with Elden Ring, it took me a while to realize I'm playing PS4 version instead of PS5 one.
@sanderson72 yeah realistically you can count on one hand how many next gen only games are worth playing, it does look like next year could well be the tipping point for last gen support being dropped though
@AverageGamer The other way around.
The people who payed for it, played it...but it's worthless old content, no reason to go back (other then replay with a new char)...hence why there was so little fuss.
I dropped Destiny a few years ago, tried to get back into it when it went FTP, but it was a mess to even know where to start, very confusing, half the content was gone so that didn't help....dropped it again and not going back anymore, done with Destiny.
Well it’s all simple know as it shows you on the dashboard when you go over the game, what console version you have downloaded.
Perhaps Bungie need to start a new FPS for PlayStation only and move forward.
@sanderson72
Could've been either Horizon, GOW or Hogwarts, but they're all crossgen, so what's the point anymore lol... They're all held back by last gen, idv what anyone says.
The 3 games that are MUST haves for me are Silent Hill 2, Dead Space and Demon's Souls...
If that irony doesn't reflect on the state of gaming today, then I don't know what to do anymore.
Seems like they just can't make stellar games anymore
@bindiana Yeah, I don't even know how is this possible, legally speaking.
I know this is an online game, but still : you BUY (not rent, but BUY) some content and it disapears... without any refound ?
That's just crazy. How can they escape with this ?
@carlos82 Being able to play with PS4 owning friends on games that don’t have cross-gen play is a possible reason.
I imagine people could want the PS4 trophies and that’s why their playing it.
It could be by choice. I play the PS4 versions of Apex Legends and Overwatch, just because I prefer the DS4 to Dualsense for competitive play.
I've played all the free stuff in D2 but very reluctant to spend any money on dlc as the story is so disjointed and arcs are missing. I'm not gonna buy dlc just for a new gun or skin that's just stupid.
Don't forget if you get the PS5 version of the game you can no longer use your PS4 controller (for no good reason), which matters if you're used to using back-buttons.
Man, I love Destiny 2. I played Destiny 1 at launch and thought it was bare bones. I played Destiny 2 at launch and thought the same. I'm used to games like World of Warcraft in which classes are very diverse, team dynamic matters, and there is an incredible amount of content . You don't get any of that with Destiny, but I tried it again with the Witch Queen and really liked the gameplay loop (minus some of the grindy stuff). I have since sunk over 700 hours into the game and I'm looking forward to Lightfall!
ps4 version should not be available on ps5 at all. with any game. ps5 version should be superior on ps5 anyway. or the ps5 should recognise that you are using a ps5 and will choose the ps5 version to download. sony is realy bad with UI and stuff. ps3 was way better. xbox is soo much better.
@kenshin4ever Yeah the Xbox UI is so much better. I love how half of the home screen are adverts. How dare Sony give you the choice of which version you want to play!
It might be people who have a friends who plays but aren't willing to give the SSD space. I know if I play again it would probably be the PS4 version on my HDD because it's too big to keep on the PS5.
I don't play Destiny but I kept it installed on my PS4 for whenever I do feel like jumping back on. Can't bring myself to download it on PS5 as I need my storage for other games and it can't run fron an external HDD unless its a PS4 version. So it's very very unlikely I'd ever download it onto the PS5 SSD
@kenshin4ever No, some games are big and I want the PS4 version. Not to mention with stuff like Hitman 3 you'd make huge portions of the game unplayable.
@Member_the_game well worded and I just wish cross Gen would end so the PS5 can REALLY show what’s she’s capable of
@BlaBlaBla "The other way around.
The people who payed for it, played it...but it's worthless old content, no reason to go back (other then replay with a new char)...hence why there was so little fuss."
It doesn't not matter if I already played it, or it worthless content. I PAID for it, so I should have access to it. Anyone with common sense knows it not right to remove paid content... But most people with common sense stopped playing Destiny long ago before the vaulting started. The only people left are Destiny/Bungie fanatics and are now stuck in an abusive relationship due to never giving the Bungie the backlash they deserve.
@Ryall I do this with some games, I've got an external hard drive for PS4 games, so games that I don't think will benefit much from the extra power I'll install the PS4 version.
Though if I did play destiny, I'd opt for the ps5 version in that case.
It should be better signposted what version you are downloading or playing, but reading other comments, the idea that it should be forced PS5 only, like on Xbox is an odd stance. In theory the PS5 version should be the superior option, but that will not always be the case. The PS4 version could have a more stable framerate (or someone may just want to use it in an external HDD or SSD), so having the option of PS4 version on PS5 is a nice extra choice for consumers.
@Dr_Luigi I think it says more about (some of) the kinds of people that play Destiny. There's a massive difference between the two gens, the PS5 is actually powerful whereas even at launch the PS4 was considered underpowered. It doesn't help that so many games are cross gen, though.
@Godot25 it's no good being smart if it's got nothing to deliver...
@Loftimus Yeah...
...because Smart Delivery is only for first party games, right?
@Godot25 its only for ignorant people that can't be bothered to look and see what they are about to download. The kind of thing that sums up the fanbase well, i think....
There is no flex in not knowing what you are doing.
@carlos82 I play PS4 versions instead of the PS5 one all the time. It's the only way to get the PS4 version's trophies. Unfortunately many games will autopop the PS5 trophies if you've played the PS4 version, but not the other way around, so you need to play the worse version in order to double rip most efficiently. I think Genshin Impact is the only game I have where you can autopop the PS4 trophies from the PS5 version.
@Milktastrophe so you purposely play the worse version of a game just to get 2 lots of the same trophies? I mean each to their own but that sounds crazy
@carlos82 they give you the option as when the ps5 1st launched the m2 wasn’t enabled so was a way of saving storage
@Smill that makes no sense, PS4 games are generally bigger than their PS5 versions and that's before the mysterious other swallows up significant amounts of space
I was really into Destiny for about a year and a half. Played the Alpha and the Beta before release. I was severely let down by the final product but pushed through because I'd paid for it. I only tried Destiny 2 when it became free and I only put a couple of hours into it, at that. It was just more of the same.
I don't think I've ever been as let down by my anticipation for a game and the false promises of a developer than I was with Destiny.
I honestly didn't think anyone was still playing it.
@carlos82 ps5 version takes up SSD space. ps4 version can be played from an external hard drive, some want that precious SSD space.... probably for cod and gow. as those 2 games take about a third of your storage.
@carlos82 it's more crazy that most devs for some reason think someone would switch from playing a game on their PS4 to PS5, but never ever the other way around. It just doesn't make sense to have one-way only save transfers like that.
@Milktastrophe that I agree with and that's one area where Xbox excels in just having your save file available
@carlos82 my bad what I meant was you could install the ps4 version on an external drive to save the ps5 ssd space not and issue now like you can just buy and m2
@TripleKing333 xbox UI is so much better than ps5´s UI ps4 was good. but not ps5. xbox has no Ads like it used to be on xbox one or xbox 360. i have both ps5 and xbox series s and x. and the xbox series console have so much more custom things you can do with the xbox games. ps5 is more strict. i mean, ps5 just adding folders!? 2 years after the release, its realy bad. and why cant i add a game to a list from the games i have installed, i have to "search" the game in my collection where i have 400 games to add to my list, i cant just write the game name, I can but i cant add it to the list from there. i have to scroll down my list to be able to add the game i want to the list , THAT is bull s h i t
@kenshin4ever ps5 UI is just barren all around , i hate it . it’s boring and missing a lot of features .
