God of War Ragnarok is shaping up to be a groundbreaking video game; that much is obvious from the time we've spent exploring the Nine Realms so far. It improves on many aspects of its predecessor, 2018's God of War, and in some ways, exceeds them. Case in point, the inclusion of a transmog armour system, a feature fans were clamouring for but never came to the original, has now been confirmed to be a thing in Ragnarok.
If you didn't know, a transmogrification system is a feature popular in MMOs and RPGs that allows the player to alter the visual appearance of an item or a piece of gear but keep the associated statistics. So, say you found a powerful armour suit but hated how it looks; you could change it to something more aesthetically pleasing while keeping the benefits.
On the official Santa Monica Studios Discord channel, during a recent live Q&A session, God of War Ragnarok's combat design lead, Mihir Sheth, was asked whether the game would feature an armour transmog system, to which he replied, "The short answer is yes. There is a way to do it...it's there in the game."
So there you have it. From the way Sheth phrased the answer, we wouldn't expect the kind of robust transmogrification system found in something like Final Fantasy XIV, but something is better than nothing. We look forward to seeing all of your most fashionable Norse-inspired outfits whenever photo mode is made available.
God of War Ragnarok will launch on 9th November, and as the appointed day draws ever closer, the wait gets a little harder. Spoilers are officially out in the wild, too, folks, so stay safe out there. Were you one of the fans clamouring for the inclusion of a transmog system in Ragnarok? Why, or why not? Great! I always want the best stats, but also want the best looking armour. Win:Win.
This is great news. I was playing the first game last night and literally wished this exact feature was in the game. I actually love the default armour, but the stats are poo compared to others that I don't like the look of
I'm one of those people who won't equip better gear if I don't like the look of it XD so this is good for me! Yes I'm very shallow
Should be a staple in most RPGs, but it’s not. How else would they keep having you grind for the same weapon over & over again to get the one that’s just right?
Loved how it was done in Nioh & hope it’s about the same.
i'd rather them sack the armour system altogether, it felt like busy work anyways. keep it simple, story driven and aesthetically sound.
I can't say its something I care about, I actually quite like the fact that these armours look different
Removed - unconstructive
@NeonTiger if it feels busy work, you still can progress through the whole story even without changing the gear. As for me those small RPG things like changing some skills, getting bonuses form gear and etc. only make GoW better and richer.
@Tomato_Goose see i can't, those stats are in direct relationship with the gameplay and difficulty, it's not just cosmetics. So i have to engage with all this stuff in order to progress in a comfortable manner. My point is i could still progress in a comfortable manner WITHOUT the need to invest my time into constantly placing things into sockets and comparing the benefits of one thing to another etc etc. It's lame in my opinion, especially in such a story centered experiencem where the clear most valuable aspect is the story and the visual experience of it all. A simple upgrade tower (or map or whatever you wanna call it) of skills from the original games would suffice beautifully, i think.
@Tomato_Goose Dude, all the side chest are very needed for the games difficultly progression. It’s already a hard game sometimes. They are “optional” in name only, they killed the pacing and got very annoying, but I had to do them or else the game would be impossible. Unless you want a huge challenged you’re not skipping that stuff.
The really off to the side stuff sure, you can skip that, it the game was padded out by white a bit. I also wish we could see the RPG elements scrapped. I don’t see how they serve a good purpose in GoW. I love a good RPG, but only when it makes sense and isn’t part of a trend as the only reason.
Thank goodness. I am the type of guy that will wear lesser equipped armor or use weaker weapons even if there is something better if I like the looks of it more than the more powerful equipment. I feel like this Transmog should be a staple in all games that feature customizable armor/weapons. It’s one of the main reasons why I love NiOH.
Time to add groundbreaking to my list of words that have lost all meaning.
Excellent news to hear, as long as they don't charge you real money for it!
