Santa Monica Studio has just wrapped up God of War Ragnarok, which is attracting rave reviews, so it would be naïve to expect something new from the studio soon. Having said that, it’s worth noting that Eric Williams directed the sequel, not Cory Barlog, and it’s no secret that he’s been plotting something else for several years.
In fact, in an interview with the LA Times, the studio admitted that it’s currently “spread out on a lot of different things”, although it refrained from sharing specifics. One thing that Williams wanted to point out, however, is that if it does make another God of War, there’ll be no shame in it. “I remember talking to someone from another game company, where they were trying to get me to leave,” he revealed. “They said, ‘Do you just want to be known as the God of War guy for the rest of your life?’ That was your big pitch to dissuade me? Because yes, I kind of do.”
We reckon it’ll be many years before we see a new God of War, and we honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Santa Monica Studio did something completely different for a little bit. That said, with a team this talented, we’re excited for whatever it tackles next.

"Do you really want to be known for these amazing games that you helped create? "
That is quite a pitch to get someone to leave...
Can't wait to see what the team is cooking up next!
Was it somebody at The Initiative trying to convince him to come work on the latest slab of shovelware per chance?
@Acquiescence Is Perfect Dark shovelware now? I mean, it’s vapourware but it’s not exactly low quality.
@nessisonett its was pretty middling 80% type game on 360, not shovel ware I'll grant you. But I didn't enjoy it at all, and don't understand why there's any desire to revisit it at all now? Very few people know or care who Joanna Dark is now....
To guy who created a game that will always be seen as a pinnacle of the form , it would indeed be an odd choice of title to try and lure him away with
Mind you, I hope the initiative produces a game, and its one that does well. We need Xbox to fire on all cylinders and bring us some classics - I'm hoping we start to see them next year.
lol. Wow.
‘Do you just want to be known as the God of War guy for the rest of your life?’
I'm assuming that Eric is probably in his 40s at this point - judging solely off of one recent picture I've seen of him, as if he isn't young enough to do any number of things beyond GoW. But to imply that ONLY being known as the director of GoW is a bad thing? C'mon dude.
I am curious what's Cory Barlog Cooking
Santa Monica is right up there with Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Insomniac & Guerilla as the best devs in the world. I mean there others knocking on the door but these studios have proved it over decades.
Can't wait to see what these guys can do other than god of war, whatever it will be im sure it will be a banger.
The thing about God of War now is they have proven they can reinvent it. And they've never been shy of changing Directors either from Jaffe to Barlog to Asmussen to Papy, back to Barlog and now Williams which always gives it a better chance for change compared to your average sequels.
Another God of War presumably Egyptian or Roman Gods with a new Director would give them a chance to change it all up again.
Can't wait to see what Cory is up to.
Yea as great as GoW is I think it's about time this talented studio spread there wings and did something new for awhile.
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika They could do both though.
Common Santa Monica make a sequel to "The Order 1886" I know it was developed by Ready at Dawn but I know Santa Monica Studio was involved also.
Santa Monica was always big into supporting other developers get content published, so i expect there is some of that work going on - alongside whatever the Cory Barlog project is.
A bright future for the studio, thats for sure
No shame at all in another GoW, we've wrecked Greece and we've wrecked the Norse.. my only question is where we going next...
'Do you want to be known as the God of War guy the rest of your life?' LMAO! Look at the reviews for each game, the lowest is a Ascension at an 80 according to metacritic. I don't know if the series is as revered as Mario or Zelda but it reviews just as well and it's always been a very big seller for PlayStation. Being known as the 'God of War guy' is as complimentary as being known as 'the Super Mario guy.'
@anon_pel222 same, i really want to see him make a new ip.
@MayaMousavi corey said he's been working on something thats not god of war. so a new ip from him would be great.
Should make a spin off gow arcade fighter game like mortal Kombat but with gow characters
It was fine when they made/partnered with that VR horror game (forget the name) or Starhawk or PS Allstars. God of War is fine, but them making a new IP would be nice. Sure a new setting in Egypt, Inca, Rome, whatever would be nice. Letting their creative juices flow for new things by all means it's nice to see studios do that and I didn't mind when studios had a new trilogy each generation even if SM, PD and Guerilla had usually a continuous throughout generations. If they changed the gameplay (not into 2018/Ragnarok personally) that would be nice, if they don't then while cool to see from the sidelines I won't play them regardless of story/setting/anything else offered though.
Huh? Isn’t Kratos the God of War guy?
Have enjoyed most of the GoW games but would to see them launch a new IP. It's time.
Looking forward to whatever game they release next!
It'll be interesting to see them escape the God of War franchise.
