PS5 is really rolling now! Sony has topped the US hardware charts for a third successive month, outselling the Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch in both dollars and units. The company has managed to massively improve PS5 stock of late, and while the system can still take a little effort to find, it’s clear that it’s much more available than it’s ever been right now.
Unfortunately, the success of the new-gen console is not enough to offset declines elsewhere, and so hardware dropped 10 per cent year-over-year. Despite this, overall consumer spend is flat compared to 2021, with October 2022 tallying $4.3 billion overall – arguably a decent result, considering inflation and other issues affecting the economy right now.
In terms of new releases, there should be no surprise to see Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at the top of the charts, where it’ll likely remain for the foreseeable future. Gotham Knights did pretty well in second position, and Persona 5 Royal got a massive boost off the back of its PS5 re-release – and, of course, coming to other platforms.

Next month going to be interesting
It was only a matter of time.
It's an amazing piece of kit for the price, I say this as an ex pc gamer who came back to console
It's good to see PlayStation on top where it belongs, especially since PlayStation is so important to the overall health of the parent company.
Really happy for star ocean as it seems its done quite well to break into the top 10. Hopefully this means tri ace can stay around.
Plague Tale: Requiem was a massive Bomb, I wonder how much Gamepass played in that.
Two years later and still talking about stock issues. Pretty poor, let's be honest about this.
Sony PlayStation the g.o.a.t. 🐐 👑.good to see ps5 doing theyre thing.word up son
@LifeGirl you do realise the semiconductor shortage effected every industry across the globe, from cars (Ford had cars sitting on production lines), phones, laptops to consoles. Sony can only make what they can get the parts for.
Obviously Sony should have their own semiconductor foundry! 😉
Image if there wasn't stock issues from day 1.
Ps5 is number 1 meanwhile Microsoft and Xbox fanboys calling CMA’s bias because they’re not trying to let Microsoft monopolize the gaming market by buying up everything 😂.
If it's available it will be number one everywhere except Japan.
glad to see a plague tale requiem flops
this should be a big lesson to devs to put a trust on their products and not giving it away for instant money
im not big fan of star ocean but i rather buy that game than buy requiem
@arra1213 I must have missed where Plague Tale was a flop. Why would you be happy for a game to flop? That makes no sense. Just because it is on Game Pass?
Star Ocean needs all the support it can get. Glad it managed to chart close to the top 10 in overall software
And in ps4,5 software it's only under a bunch of sports games and the shooter lol
Great to see Star Ocean in the Mix.
I been telling everyone in the Fam/Work - If only planning on buying 1 console this generation hold off for a PS5.
My Cousin just got his. People been waiting for easy stock for some time.
@cburg
"I must have missed where Plague Tale was a flop"
its missing on the best selling of ps4/5 games where u can buy it thats why u missed it
"Why would you be happy for a game to flop? That makes no sense. Just because it is on Game Pass?"
why would i buy a game for a full price thats free on other platforms instead of spending that money on other games like star of ocean that u cant play for free?
@cburg I'm afraid I have to agree with that sentiment. Game Pass is a cancer and needs to go away.
It surely is great for consumers in the short term, but it's already causing tectonic shifts that could negatively impact the industry long term.
You get what pay for, simple as that. And Ragnarok is a timely reminder of a business model that has worked great for gamers so far.
@arra1213 I just can't seem to comprehend what you are saying. It makes no sense.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand.
@Art_Vandelay Should PS Plus go away as well? I subscribe to both Premium and Game Pass. Both are great in their own ways but there is no way that Game Pass is a cancer. There are countless interviews of developers that have praised the game pass model. I think unfortunately that you have bought into the Sony marketing hype.
@cburg C'mon, mate. Sony clearly had their hand forced into this model. But even though, it's still a much more sustainable service than GP.
Again: Ragnarok. I'm on PS+ Extra and I didn't even blink before preordering it as soon as the reviews came out. Because I know I don't want to wait months or years to play this specific game.
Note, this is the same business model that used to provide us with several outstanding movies every year back in the nineties. Until Netflix broke it. We used to get The Lord of The Rings. Now we get The Rings of Power. And maybe a Top Gun every couple years.
Offering day one releases in an age where AAA games cost hundreds of millions of dollars is simply not sustainable. And in fact, Spencer has largely changed his tone regarding GP since Microsoft's latest earning report. Not sure if you've seen it. And I tell you why: GP needs a subscribers base in the hundreds of millions to be profitable, and MS has massively overestimated the service's growth rate.
Oh, and those developers' interviews: everyone's happy while their bellies are full. Microsoft was dumping money into the service's growth, but it sounds the tides might the turning already.
@Sequel so i own all 4, 3 consoles and a PC and i might be leaving PC soon. The older i get the less i want to fiddle with all the launcher and store fronts. Patches and driver support. I do like the performance advantage of course. PS5 is for sure a amazing kit for the price and so is my Series X. I almost wish i loved Sony controllers for Shooters and i might use PS5 for all my gaming needs. I am a mouse and keyboard and offset stick junkie for shooting games tho and the sticks on the PS controllers and the longer trigger pulls scare me to try the jump.
@TheCollector316 I mean that is a solid point. Sony is half of what it was when i was a kid. PlayStation carries them a lot. I used to own nothing but Sony TV’s and other components. Not so much these days. I went with the LG C1 cause of price to performance compared to the Sony’s.
This is just common sense. I can't believe that some people have an issue with it.
