Credit where credit’s due: Cyberpunk 2077 is back. It’s been over two years since the game’s disastrous PS4 launch, but now running robustly on PS5 – and with a critically acclaimed anime to complement it – players are returning to Night City in their droves. In fact, the release’s resurgence has been so strong that Polish developer CD Projekt RED has enjoyed a record third quarter.
The game recently received a patch which boosted its already impressive new-gen visuals even further, and it added crossover content with Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners back in September. This propelled the release’s sales to extraordinary new levels, and according to CDPR it’s been attracting around one million concurrent players per day of late.
All of that, of course, means big money for the developer: “In terms of financials, this was the best third quarter in our entire history,” chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz explained. “With consolidated revenues at 246 million PLN (~$54.6m) – mostly owing to strong sales of Cyberpunk – the Group posted 99 million PLN (~$21.3m) in net profit.”
Cyberpunk 2077’s longevity is mirroring that of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has received enormous boosts from the TV show over the years, and is poised to receive its own major PS5 update next month. CDPR will be hoping it can maintain the momentum until next year’s Phantom Liberty expansion, with a full-length sequel also in development, too.

These multimedia tie-ins with TV and movies really do seem to boost game sales and engagement. No wonder Sony has a show planned for almost all of their gaming IP’s.
The problem I see is, do Horizon, God of War, Gran Turismo, or The Last of Us really need something to boost interest? What Sony really needs is a Dreams TV show. 😉
On subject, I’ve started watching Edgerunners. Hopefully I like it more than I liked the video game. So far its okay.
I really hope that despite what they share publicly they have been deeply humbled by the release of Cyberpunk. That game had the potential to be as big as anything else out there besides COD and GTA, but due to their hubris it never will.
Let's see how they handle their next release.
@Hindenburg i think it ls safecto say they have probarbly learned quite alot. Just purchased CP in the sale but not started it yet.
"It’s been over two years since the game’s disastrous PS4 launch". The launch was Dec 9th, 2020, so no, it hasn't been over two years. It's been "nearly" two years.
I jumped in with the launch of the PS5 version. It really does sound like it's much improved from it's launch. I'm glad too because now that the bugs aren't as big of an issue anymore, the actual game is actually excellent for the most part.
I still haven't finished it yet but I've slowly but surely been chipping away at it. I'd absolutely say it's one of the best RPGs on PS5 at the moment.
Oh and Edgerunners is incredible too. That helps!
Just gotta say Cyberpunk 2077 is a fackin beautiful game! It's better than Far Cry and almost all SP shooters out currently. On my 2nd run and it's just such a joy to play. The new update wiped off that ridiculous 100GB size down to 59GB, so glad.
@mollock It's not arrogant to point out when someone's incorrect, just like how it's not arrogant for you to point out I got the specific date wrong, right? And regardless, it's still a pretty significant error on the part of a journalist to make.
@Th3solution Dreams TV show or we riot! It'd be an anthology series focusing on different games/worlds and characters.
