The recently released PS5 version of Persona 5 Royal has been in the wild long enough for the technical wizards over at Digital Foundry to work their magic, comparing the immaculate JRPG across each and every platform on which the game is playable.
Persona 5 has seen several iterations since it was released in 2016. Originally designed as a PS3 game, repeated delays saw the game reworked to run on PS4. An expanded re-release known as Persona 5 Royal was released in 2019, featuring additional and enhanced content. The native PS5 version comes with the usual slew of current-gen enhancements we have come to expect, including 4K visuals, the requisite 60fps and DualSense controller support.
But there is more to it than just that. Taking advantage of the additional horsepower provided by the PS5, Persona 5 Royal comes packed with new artwork, high-res assets, enhanced depth of field, and with the game's lighting and colouring enhanced, making an already visually impressive title a real stunner, despite its PS3 origins.
Did you double-dip on the PS5 release of Persona 5 Royal? Did you notice a visual difference, or is it something only noticeable in a side-by-side comparison, like the one above? Take your time in the comments section below.

Hadnt planned on getting this on PS5 as i had it on ps4 and got reasonably far in to it but i did in the end. Now to find some time to actually get it started.
Does the ps+ collection game upgrades to this or you have to double dip?
@zebric21 The PS Plus collection game doesn't even get you persona 5 Royal - there isn't even a DLC upgrade to go from persona 5 vanilla to persona 5 Royal, it's a whole separate PS4 game in it's own right (even though it's basically the same, just with extra content and some slight tweaks)
However, if you own Persona 5 Royal on Ps4... There's also no upgrade option to get Persona 5 Royal on PS5, you have to buy it all over again if you want to play the PS5 version. You can be sure that there are some uunfortunate souls who've not only double dipped but triple dipped on this one (maybe quadruple dipped if they also owned P5 on PS3 too)
Personally, I don't think the game even needs all the upgrades that come with the PS5 version. It's a turn based RPG, not an action game, it doesn't matter one bit if it's not 60fps - I'm perfectly happy having played and completed the PS4 version - it's such a long game I can't imagine I'm ever going to do it again. If they did have a PS4 to PS5 upgrade path I'd maybe dip into it, but they didn't, so I can't imagine I'm ever going to be tempted to get this uunless it's literally on sale for something stupid like ÂŁ5
The improvements on PS5 are pretty nice, but the newly introduced deadzone on the camera stick and the mandatory epilepsy filter are bugging me a little. I can't help but feel that the PS4 version is superior, despite the lower graphical quality.
Never played this one, and I probably get switch version as I prefer to play long JRPG on handheld rather than with enchanced graphics and 60fps.
And people talk about GTAV releasing 3 times.
@TheArt to be fair the 3rd release was for other platforms. not really Sony.
that said as its 3rd time it should have an update path
@stvevan Obviously not Sony I know that, it's ridiculous Atlus/SEGA who be selling outfits for real world money. When after all that part-time jobs Joker takes you'd think he'd be able to afford some decent clothes like basically every other game out there.
I have played the Ps4 version on my PS5 for almost 300 hours. If I pay for it again, it would be for a mobile platform (Switch), a timeless platform (Steam), or both (Steam Deck).
@TheArt. I know right.i already got persona 5 royal on my ps4 pro.and it looks and play amazing.im not getting the ps5 versionđź‘Ž.im good with it.i mean this game was releease so many time
And the ps4 or ps4 pro version plays wonderful.word up son
Yeah, they need an upgrade option and save data to carry over. this is unacceptable. But more than anything, my 40H is P5:R PS4 is worth too much to just dump it out because Atlus is lazy. Kinda makes me wish I hadn't gotten the Royal and just bought this CE or something.
It’s a bit of an own goal for Atlus not to offer an upgrade path to those who have already bought P5R. I would have thought anyone with a PS5 would have taken a look at the version available on the bonus PS Plus selection if not already bought it on sale. Would seem the majority of purchases are on switch regardless of the “significant graphical compromises”. I suppose if anything based on sales data PS5 vs Switch there is not much of a case to bring Persona 6 to the PS5.
Sounds great!
Still unsure if I'll be getting this on either PS5 or Switch. I still have my copy of the PS4 version. I can get it on the Switch but lately, I haven't been gaming on the go due to work and I usually end up playing at home. I am tempted to get the PS5 version but I'm not sure I'm willing to pay another full price just for the 60fps upgrade. I might just end up sticking with the PS4 version. Still sucks that there's no way to upgrade. Hell, I'm willing to pay that $10 fee if required.
Been playing P5R on XBox, and I am so glad i kept the game on my backlog until now. I bought this game on PS4 ages ago but kept putting it for later, I honestly would had been rather disheartened had I played my copy of Persona 5 [no royal].
Νο Ray Tracing and 120 fps is a no from me....Oh well its a turn based RPG, 60 fps dont make a huge difference
@Tharsman disheartened by what? Did you accidently hit the send button before finishing this post?
@Balosi no, I simply mean disheartened by playing the non-Royal version before the royal version came out, and even then the PS4 version of royal either, because there is zero path to upgrade save data between any version.
I would simply not have had the energy to play the whole game again from scratch to see the new content introduced in royal, and I would be very disappointed had i played the whole game on 30fps. So there you go, long version of being disheartening to play the non-royal version on PS4.
Looked phenomenal on the PS5 with my LG CX. Only played through Madarame’s Palace though. Can’t wait to play the rest!!!
I did not double dip. I don't think 60fps is that important in a turn based game. It ran perfectly fine on ps4 pro when i played it.
I am ready for P6.
@zebric21 The PS+ collection comes with the PS4 version (which runs at 60 FPS @ 4K resolution). The native PS5 version (which isn't much of an upgrade) will cost you the full price. I find this method really silly. If you have a saved PS4 filed on your PS5 you will not be able to transfer saves if you buy the PS5 version. I hope this helps.
Funnily enough I just bought the PS5 version from Target's recent Buy 2 get 1 free sale.
Hopefully this time will be the final push to get me back into playing the game.
