Resident Evil Village will be fully playable for PSVR2 from beginning to end on Sony’s next-gen headset’s launch day, 22nd February. And the best news of all: it’ll be free. To clarify, you will need to own a copy of Capcom’s survival horror on PS5, but regardless of whether you own the base version or the recently released Gold Edition, you’ll be able to download the PSVR2 functionality at no extra cost.
Capcom has gone to great lengths to repurpose Ethan Winters’ adventure for virtual reality, allowing you to physically interact with the release’s often grotesque Romanian backdrop. “The mode utilises the 4K HDR display, eye tracking, and 3D audio to make Resident Evil Village more realistic and intense than ever,” the press release reads. “Soak in the village’s richly detailed atmosphere in virtual reality, including the ornate chambers of Castle Dimitrescu, and prepare to feel truly dwarfed by the larger-than-life characters and creatures that lurk within.”
In addition to the sound and visuals, the controls have been completely overhauled to take advantage of the PSVR2 Sense Controllers’ unique capabilities, too: “Players can hold up their arms to guard against enemies that get too close for comfort. Weapons also feel tangibly more realistic in VR Mode with new gameplay elements that dial up the immersion, such as dual wielding and natural motion controls for reloading firearms and brandishing knives.”
To be honest, we’d expected to pay to play Resident Evil Village with PSVR2, because it looks like Capcom has gone to great lengths to realise this experience in virtual reality. We’re actually astounded that it’s launching as free DLC – but obviously in a positive way. We can’t wait to play on launch day!

What a launch game!
Hoping for a resi 7 psvr2 update as well but very good news
Do you actually enjoy standing up while gaming? I have wanted to invest into VR for years, but my gaming habits and amount of free time lead me to believe that I won't get much out of such device.
@Hindenburg You could play this sitting down, I think.
Couldn't play it in normal mode because its so scary, wonder if I can manage to do it in vr will probably give it a try, sounds awesome
Reckon Sony need to have another state of play to showcase the launch line up. It feels like it’s tripled since the announcement.
This is a huge get & it’s a free update!
If Half-life and Astrobot VR is announced, It'll be a solid enough launch. Right now, still not enough content to justify day one, but the lineup is slowly getting there.
That's generous.
Capcom have been doing so much right for the last few years. This is awesome news.
That's not really free, but it's still really cool.
That’s what I’m talking about. Resident Evil 7 was taken to the next level in PSVR. The absolute best way to play it.
With PSVR2’s extra power, Resident Evil 8 is going to blow our heads off.
And free! What a launch title.
@Lup you still have to pay for the headset but at least the upgrade is free, it's a nice incentive at least
With this, Fantavision and Horizon I really can't wait for launch, I'm just hoping for a few more PSVR ports like Tetris, Blood and Truth, Astro Bot and Beat Saber. All credit to Capcom for this being a free upgrade given the work that must have gone into it
Was praying this would be a launch game. I didn’t think my excitement for launch could get higher, but here we are. This, call of the mountain, switchback, and Demeo will be day 1 for me. Struggling to think of a better launch line up for even a mainline console. Good job Sony.
(Bit of a misleading headline however).
Edit; Fantavision!!! Launch just got crazy good!
Edit 2: just read the blog. Dyschronia: Chronos Alternate looks crazy good too. What a day for PSVR2 launch game reveals. I need to go back to bed now.
Might have to get this when it's on sale then
This sounds awesome. Great launchgame for PSVR2. Also, I just got a refund for 40 SEK (about 3-4$) for my pre-ordered Mossbundle at PS Store. Seems they lowered the price.
..just checked - it's a PS Plus discount.
Fantastic news and even happier now after reading this. Glad I have my psvr2 pre ordered.
@TrickyDicky99
You would rather shoot with a pad than motion controllers in VR? Yes, I think you probably are in a minority there.
Some games work well with mostly pad play and some tracking. Mainly third person games like Astro Bot. But pushing a button on a pad that isn’t “in game” when in a fully immersive VR world…that is usually just by far the inferior way to do things, especially in first person.
@StylesT
Doubt it’ll be on sale for a while now. I might look in CEX for it between now and Feb though. £22 with trade back value bringing that right down…better than the £35 of the game. Then again, I kind of want to reward Capcom for the game. Don’t really need to save the £20…
@thefourfoldroot1 probably right...or it will be on sale for alot more than it was before this was announced
we need outlast 1 & 2 in VR. imagine being intoxicated playing outlast in VR !!! maaan dare to dream
@Hindenburg when I owned the original, I never stood up. I'm lazy. Haha, most of the games you should be able to sit, as it will just track your head. But I suppose it just depends on the games
Absolutely awesome, Capcom are some serious rockstar for giving this 5 star upgrade away to existing owners.
So on launch day im going to be playing:
RE8
Horizon
Switchback
No Mans Sky
This keeps getting better, cant wait!
@Omnistalgic
This is probably one of the biggest launch line ups for hardware ever, if you also factor in unlisted stuff and free upgrades like No Mans Sky, Pistol Whip etc! Sure I want Astrobot, HL Alyx and also GT7 at some point, but there needs to be some drip feed of releases throughout the year. There’s enough quality and varied titles for launch. Most of us can only play/ afford so many games at once!
@Hindenburg you can play nearly all vr games standing and seated...I play mostly seated and don't have any problems
@TheMarinePS hope your joking but if you couldn't play it flat you won't be able to play it in vr because it will be so much more scary!re7 I could play flat without thinking but in vr at some points I was frozen with fear.VR is so much more immersive when it comes to horror!
@Hindenburg I did the whole of RE7 seated, so this should be the same
WHAT ABOUT GRAN TURISMO 7?We have no decent car racing games on any psvr device so this would be awesome plus would pull a lot of people I know in to vr.To be honest atm it's all looking a bit lacklustre apart from 3 or 4 games
Wish more of the bigger developers put some effort into VR as well
@TrickyDicky99 maybe you've just played vr with crappy hand tracking, like the psvr
Giant vr baby ,good grief
@TheMarinePS you will not...ha ha
@ROTTIEMAN16
“3 or 4 games” at release, that are really good, nor just filler, is more than we usually get with a new console release.
Very happy with the PSVR2 launch lineup.
One of the few RE game I didnt (and still havent) buy day one.
I was spoilt by VR in 7 and deliberately held off buying village because it wanted my first play through to be experienced in VR.
Now I just got to pick up a PS5 and PSVR2.........I was just waiting for a revised model (to be honest I was just waiting for a 2TB standard model)
@Omnistalgic Astrobot is going to be updated eventually because is an in-house game. Half-life I'm unsure, not because Sony won't try but because Valve just don't give a damn about their software LOL so I don't see them putting the interns to make the port. Hopefully Sony can talk and offer engineers to make it happen.
This is great news. If only the gold edition would have on disc dlc, but it's not required for vr anyways.
For me, the VR2 is the biggest, most exciting launch lineup in console history. Usually a system launches with 1-2 games I'm interested in but this one has like, 10 day 1 purchases. How am I gonna play all this?? Lol
Call of the Mountain
RE8
No Man's Sky
Kayak VR
Moss Bundle
Switchback
Demeo...
The list goes on. CANNOT WAIT! Now just give me an upgrade path for Astrobot and Tetris Effect and I'm GOLDEN for like a year. Haha
@Lup So it's a free upgrade if you buy the game on PS5? Yeah, agreed, not free.
Nice one Capcom. A certain PR win!
Epic! Now looking around for the best RE Village bargain!
I didn't have a problem with them charging for the 3rd person mode but to make this free (you need the expensive headset so I won't be able to play this mode) & not the 3rd person is pretty sh***y imo
@SoulChimera all the processing is done through the console it's really the extra power of the ps5 & not the headset itself although obviously the display & tracking is better , I wish they'd let PSVR 1 owners play it with a lower resolution & the same control method as re7 vr
@TrickyDicky99
Aim assist is with your head, yes. Fine aiming.
@Would_you_kindly I know.
As for letting people with PSVR1 play PSVR2 games with lower resolution. They would have to develop a second version for tracking and controllers.
@DukeeDukems there are no free lunches, gents.
Just picked up the gold edition (£27.99) and now waiting for Feb 22 before I play it.
@Gooseman42 Yeah true! This is actually already a solid launch for many. I'm just not sure I can handle playing Resident Evil in VR lol...
Horizon and Astrobot would be just as good as PS5 launch, which was amazing!
I'm not really into horror games (I don't get scared. It's weird, but whatever), but I may get this just to play in vr.
@TrickyDicky99 VR with a gamepad isn't really VR, its a HMD with 6 DOF. I really dislike games that claim to be VR titles, but then they treat VR as just a 360 degree TV strapped to your face.
