Geoff Keighley has done an admirable job with his The Game Awards format, providing an annual livestream that’s worth watching if you’re a fan of the medium. However, our biggest criticism is that the show has just been far too long – in recent years, the broadcast has been pushing three hours, and ultimately it runs out of steam.
It seems that the host has took the feedback to heart, and is planning a shorter event this year. “I won't say anything officially until we’re through our rehearsals, but we think it’s going to be significantly shorter,” he said on a Twitter Spaces stream.
Keighley admitted that with the shorter runtime there will be “fewer bigger games”, but he stressed that it will be worth watching: “We’ve got some really great announcements. There’s some games that I've been hoping and wanting to show for a number of years that are finally ready this year […] so we're very, very happy with how that’s coming together.”
Any guesses for what will be on display?

Probably because Sony and Microsoft won’t have much of a presence due to the ongoing Acquisition drama.
Fewer opportunities to win a Steam Deck…
Wonder if there will ever be a focus on the actual awards. Personally I’d be happy if the show became “Winter Gamesfest” and the rewards were done elsewhere on their own. Or not at all, although I know some people actually care about the awards.
@TheKramer89 😂 I thought the same thing. This would be the year he'd announce that he's shortening the award show, wouldn't it?
Oh, Geoff...
So more adverts and less games then?
The real question for me is what gets cut to shorten the length, do we get the same amount of actual content and less fluff and adverts or the other way round?
@xx_PharsydeChemist_x Yeah, if Sony's not even going to have a Playstation Showcase because of it they're not going to bring a lot to the Game Awards. I'd imagine outside the already confirmed FFXVI presence, there'll be PC ports, Death Stranding 2 closing the show and PSVR2 ads.
On the Xbox side my predictions are Game Pass ads, Goldeneye shadow drop and a Redfall trailer.
As long as we get some really neat surprises, I'm fine with a shorter showcase.
I wouldn't mind a long show if it wasn't in the middle of the night for Europeans - so this is good news for those of us intending to watch it
I promise, it'll only feel like an eternity this time!
Plus Kojima is only getting a 15 minute spotlight this year, to promote his new line of selfie filters
so 2hrs 55 instead of 3hr.... awards to get even less time
Probably because there's little to show.
It would be nice if they actually focused on the awards. The devs deserve a nice night where they can dress up and celebrate each others’ success.
My main complaint (and I think the same goes for almost anyone I heard complaining) isn’t the duration, but the ratio of actual gaming stuff.
The show is mostly off-industry stuff (celebrities, musical guests, irrelevant ads) and way too little time dedicated to actual awards, with several awards “granted” via a slide show in between ads.
I will likely not watch the show again, just pay attention afterwards to the results, and any game trailer worth paying attention will likely be covered by sites anyways.
@nessisonett Absolutely. it is time for the people behind the game to really shine. Like a beauty pageant, but for game developers.
Also you can use game-specific pickup lines and flirt puns and the others will actually gets it. It hurts like hell when they don't (I have been told. By a friend. It never happened to me. Not at all )
Hopefully we hear what Bluepoint has been up to, and hopefully it’s Bloodborne.
Hopefully we’ll get more psvr2 game showcases/news. Not really bothered about awards in gaming or anything else (especially given I tend to completely disagree with all the results). If they cut time hopefully it’s all the fluff and not actual games.
Less cringe, more actual game reveals please
I never watch these awards, couldn't care less; I just go on Youtube and see what games were announced the morning after.
Getting old keighley..
@Tharsman Yeah, isn't there always like an 8 minute musical number by some band I've never heard of playing video game music I've never heard of?
It calls itself an awards show while it tries to be Saturday Night Live.
Also, will there be a 30 minute pre-show where they actually announce all of the awards before the awards show starts? That contributes to the length, even if he doesn't consider it to be part of the show.
I guess Level Infinite isn't as interested in bankrolling this this time around.
Hopefully they're cutting out the awards show pretense. Nobody cares about games that are already out, we just want new announcements.
@Shstrick I've been saying this for years. It's something that makes Gaming hard to take seriously (along with several other things) after all the Oscars don't justify their existence by showing trailers for the next Marvel movie.
Hopeful for a BioShock 4 reveal 👀 not getting my hopes up though
Wouldn't mind seeing more of Space Marine 2
How about significantly better?
Cool by me.im here for the new games reveals and the game of the year showdown.let the games begin.word up son
Can’t say if I’m a fan of the Medium as I haven’t played it yet but hopefully it’s better than The Game Awards show normally is.
Thank ***** for that.
Dream BIG… from PlayStation Last of Us part 3 tease, Xbox gameplay trailer for Fable 4, and Nintendo for the LOVE of All GOOD in the WORLD the Metroid Prime remake revealed!!!
I’m relieved it’s shorter but I just hope we get some quality announcements. Getting worse every year Keighly…
Isn't this the show when they had cars & one was related to a Pokémon car? if so cut that filler out.
Its not really the length thats the issue with Keighly showcases, more the quality of these 'reveals'. Fingers crossed that aspect is improved...
the awards/celebration portion of the show is always overshadowed by the ads. shortening the show will likely not fix this, but let's see!
less fluff and filler , sounds like it will be better then
Cut out ***** like the 20 min piece on Cross Dressing Gamers like last year
My wishlist is Dragon Age Dreadwolf gameplay and announcement, and Diablo 4 open beta date and launch date.
Is there a right answer?
@Grumblevolcano Best way to go into the show, keep your expectations low and you can't be disappointed.
@xx_PharsydeChemist_x Stop it, that was a fake rumor that everyone is now spreading as an absolute truth when the acquisition drama HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MARKETING FOR BOTH COMPANIES.
Microsoft had a big event in June almost 6 months after the acquisition was announced, Activision has had plenty of events mainly to promote MW2, and Sony has had several States of Play even if they didn’t have a big Showcase this year.
Also it didn’t stop Sony for raising the price of the PS5 in every region except the US and then trying to use the argument that MS could raise console prices if they become the market leader after closing the acquisition… (which is hypocritical to say the least).
I reckon both companies will have presence at TGA in some form, obviously not a big blowout but most likely a teaser or gameplay of a game we already know about.
Last i heard it was gonna be 3 hours. We shall see.
I bet they don't cut back on ads just stuff people actually watch it for 😂
I'm looking forward to this. I always enjoyed the game awards.
Thank god. Show us some new trailers, announce the winners and move on quickly, rinse and repeat. And all while hurrying the hell up.
Probably not but I always hope for Dragons Dogma 2.
That's good. It's been a problem last few years. I like TGA's but Geoff wants to have it all without understanding less is often more.
But i'm out on Thursday so will just be catching up with the trailers on Friday morning.
I’m hoping that Ubisoft will show something from Prince of Persia & Splinter Cell remakes 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 Sony would be nice to share something about Spider-Man 2 or Wolverine.
People have to come to terms with advertising, it's the only way, outside of industry funding, that this show will continue to happen.
Though, personally, I couldn't care who wins what. Like all other award shows, it's just the opinion of a select minority that, for some reason, hold more weight than sales and fan adoration.
As long we get some real World Premier surprises. Would like to see Michael Ironside coming back for Splinter Cell as Sam Fisher. I will watch it after the fact because of the Ad pile …
Many thanks for those people who make the recaps, much appreciated!
"There’s some games that I've been hoping and wanting to show for a number of years that are finally ready this year..."
Metroid Prime 4 confirmed!
Who advertises that the show will have less worthwhile content, but it'll still be great? Like... It was bad before, how can having less of value make it less bad?
Geoff is gonna make E3 look great even if they just rerun 2021.
Isnt this the guy that last time said "you'll see 10+ announcements as big as any AAA" and then went on to announce fek all.
Guys a legend in his own underpants, and only to himself.
