Yuri Lowenthal, the voice actor behind Insomniac Games’ Peter Parker, is not exactly going to say Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is crap, is he? Speaking with ComicBook.com, however, he did give us some insight into the upcoming PS5 exclusive project. He told the website that the game is “astonishing”, and admitted that he’s still got a “little bit of work to do” on the title – despite the release launching later this year.
“It’s a massive game so I’m still doing a little bit of work,” he beamed. “I know they’re confident about their release date and Insomniac has always been good about that. Obviously, I can’t really talk about the game much, but I will tell you that it’s astonishing. I’m so excited for you to play it. They know they’ve got big shoes to fill from the last two games and they’ve done it. I just can’t wait for people to play it.”
So, perhaps as expected, it sounds like this game will be even bigger than Marvel’s Spider-Man, which already had a sturdy 20 or so hours running time. Obviously, we know the new title will feature Venom as well as Kraven the Hunter, but Sony’s been keeping details relatively close to its chest aside. We’re looking forward to a full blowout later this year.

Do we know where this will be set? Is it Manhattan again? My main issue was that as fun as it was to swing around - and the movement really was exceptional - the actual setting didn't really add much. There was nothing to explore or interact with, it was just an excuse to swing from A to B. I would like the location to add something more this time around, like little surprises at the top of buildings to discover, or little sidequests that aren't simply icons on a map.
I hope this game plays around with the mission structure and activities, rather than just being bigger. I recently started Mile Morales and while the core Spider-Man game is still fun, oof, I'm already feeling that open world check list fatigue.
I'm glad MM is a shorter game.
@Mauzuri Honestly missing the MJ sections in MM.
@Ooccoo_Jr I'm hoping they add Queens and places like that, instead of making it an impressive skybox have it explorable.
@RudeAnimat0r I never had an issue with them. They were all pretty straightforward and short with plenty of checkpoints. They did slow down the story without adding much but I don't really understand the strong dislike. I am aware I am in the minority here though.
I'm expecting Insomniac to blow my socks off with this.
PS5 exclusive with both Spider-men, Venom, Goblin and Kraven? The potential is off the scale.
I actually enjoyed Spider Man, despite not being a big super hero fan and managed to get the platinum. But I tried Miles after and dropped it pretty quick as it was just the same map with the same activities. I really hope it's not in Manhattan again and is less "ubisoft" or my excitement drops to practically zero
This obsession with massive games is so tiring!Ive been gaming for 40 years now and artificial padding of games to make it feel like better value for money is the main thing I really dislike about modern gaming. With these super powerful machines capable of making any game you could think off the main thing a lot of people want is size?Give me ten hours of classic gaming over 50 hours of repetitive ticking off of map markers and dull side quests...its the bane of modern gaming it really is
@Sakai Of course it'll be in Manhattan, it's Spider-Man. It would like wanting a Batman game not based in Gotham.
@Mauzuri I like that it offered alternate gameplay, and I liked MJ as a character, sometimes more than Peter, honestly. The combat is fun in Spider-Man but the gameplay doesn't really evolve beyond web slinging Batman and at least in Arkham there is some investigating to break things up.
As has been said below MJ sections are straightforward. I don't remember getting snagged on any of them.
@AdamNovice This is not exactly an analogus comparison. Manhattan is a borough in the city and Gotham is a city. Spider-Man has plenty of stories in the other boroughs. Hell he shows up in Jersey City in Ms. Marvel stories.
I'd be worried about the scale of the game but I think they have to add other boroughs for 2 - at least Queens and Brooklyn. Who doesn't want to take Spidey to Coney Island?
I just hope it doesn't feature characters who constantly tell me what to do
@AdamNovice you’ve not been watching the recent movies then…… they could easily have different settings/areas where it develops.
@ROTTIEMAN16 I’m in the middle. 8/10 hours is a short game for me. 50 plus is too long. For £70 I don’t want it over in 10 hours.
Never been a huge fan of the Spiderman character in general, I mean it's fine and all the movies are good fun don't get me wrong. Always much prefered the darker tone characters of Wolverine, Deadpool or Batman. However in 2018 Insomniac alone made me a proper fan of Spiderman. And of course Miles too
@RudeAnimat0r The other boroughs I agree with, it makes all the sense in the world to have Queens, Brooklyn etc too because it will add variety in the environment and maybe different mechanics for swinging around smaller buildings. However Spider-Man's biggest appeal in games is swinging around big skyscrapers so Manhattan will very much stay. Hopefully they mix it up quite a bit.
@Stocksy I've seen all the movies, gaming is different, people expect Spider-Man to be swinging around an open world New York, back when Beenox tried something different with Shattered Dimensions all they got back was "make it open world again". It's just the way it is.
I’ll be honest, I’m not one for superhero’s. Never have been. I only ever saw the og Batman and superman films, I’m talking Christopher reeve etc. Spider-Man ps4 absolutely blew me away however. Day 1 for me this.
Place the game in Topeka, Kansas, you cowards.
@WallyWest Yeah exactly, loved Ultimate Spider-Man on PS2 which had Queens.
@Stocksy see that's the thing,a short game shouldn't be £70 imo.I think the whole pricing of games needs a rethink but what do I know, lol
Cool.spiderman 2 is definitely gonna be amazing.word up son
Day 1 Purchase
I don't care. Just make sure a Spider-Man game has physics for the first time since the PS2 games for crying out loud.
Previous games had boring as hell swinging. Autopilot crap without fall damage...
@RudeAnimat0r
Yeah the swinging was fun for a couple of hours, but it doesn't have any depth, no physics, it's autopilot and you can't die from falling == boring.
If the swinging WAS actually fun and therefor it was FUN to go from objective to objective, then it's fine to have a huge openworld. Just like GTA IV. I was driving around the city years after finishing the game.
And unlike Assassin's Creed games where traveling absolutely sucks, but the worlds are massive and boring.
Oh nice I didn't know Kraven's in it 😲
@ROTTIEMAN16 isn't the padding optional though ? I'm quite addicted to clearing maps and i like exploring every nook and cranny ,a 10hr game for 70 quid i just would not buy, i want my extras, then leave it to the individual whether they play them or not.
@tallythwack but then you would have missed classics like portal, titanfall 2,dead space 1&2 and many many more what were all 10-12 hour games
@ROTTIEMAN16 I imagine the check list stuff will amount to similar, but the size mentioned is probably more about the narrative in this case, or the actual scope of the game (hopefully) meaning potential for a game changer.
I doubt the lead VA would be bragging about collecting more backpacks in game as exciting, it's highly likely he means the script/material he had to work with fantastic and the game is full of great content
@Ravix I may be on my own here bit I feel spiderman was crammed with way to much ***** and would have been a much better game cut in half with a more curated world and mostly story content.Even though it's optional all the filler puts me off a game the moment I see it.I feel the big Sony games are nearly all heading in that direction which saddens me as I've always loved sonys exclusives through ps1,2,3 and 4
@ROTTIEMAN16 oh yeah, I never do a lot of "busy work" in games if there's no story reason for doing so, unless it's an interesting mechanic or part of a fun gameplay loop, so I totally get that. But some people do like that stuff too, so fair play to them. I prefer if games are completely focused on the stuff they do best, rather than trying to add elements from other games for the sake of it too.
I just doubt the VA in this case would be excited about that extra stuff, I think he's more excited about the massive game in the sense of the stuff you do like, the story/narrative etc as that's the parts he will have been involved in. I'd not be surprised if Spider-Man 2 is more akin to the really great Sony stuff, that is all about the characters, narrative and being perhaps a bit more mature than other games. The inclusion of Venom instantly gives this game the potential for a darker feel too, in my opinion.
@AdamNovice Referring to your second point here, don't you think that's due to the gaming landscape? In the current day and age, a linear Spider-Man game would be received with "I never want to see an open world spidey game again"
High on my list. Loved SM1 and Miles Morales.
Sony seems to be the only one who can make a great Superhero game at this point.
I enjoyed the previous games, so I'll definitely get this one.
I hope they create new gameplay elements though. GoW: Ragnarok is pretty much GoW with a new story (similar to Miles Morales approach, but huge in scope), and I don't really want to pay full price for another sequel that adds nothing new to gameplay.
I absolutely loved the 1st one, got the platinum and then smashed the remastered version on the ps5 and smashed Miles morales. I loved every play through I did and I can't wait for more. Really looking forward to this and have big expectations.
Hopefully that doesn't mean it is really bloated as I thought there was way too much samey side stuff in the first game. Still really enjoyed it though!
@ROTTIEMAN16 couldn't agree more, sick to the back teeth with open world, padded out pointless missions, side quests. One mission in Spiderman was chasing pigeons FFS !!
@AdamNovice But Insomniac just did a game with multiverse. Ratchet and Clank. Good chance the multiverse would return to Spiderman 2. One Manhattan is ok but multiple is insane. Everytime Insomniac made a game or a sequel it wasnt like the one before it.
@Ooccoo_Jr I know how you feel about there being nothing to do In a whole city but damn, swinging around was so much fun. I even found myself letting crimes go unpunished so I didn't ruin a good run especially when the music flowed. Same with Morales and chaining tricks together.
Top 3 anticipated this year for me
I’m with other people.. I’m so tired of seeing Manhattan.. In Miles Morales, Peter goes on a trip somewhere with MJ.. I want to swing around wherever he went
They don't need to say anything else to get my money, they've earned my trust. Both games were absolutely spectacular (no pun intended) will preorder as soon as its available!
Can't wait for the game!
@AdamNovice uh , shattered dimensions , one of the greatest SM games by the way
@WolfyTn and fall because there isn’t nothing to swing from
I’ve just finished the remaster to 100% today and will be playing Miles Morales tomorrow but only for the story. I’m looking forward to SM2 but I’m in no hurry to return to Manhattan anytime soon. I can see why they would return there for the web slinging as it wouldn’t make sense if the setting didn’t have skyscrapers but a lot of us will be bored of the sameness of Manhattan unless there’s much more to do and interact in and around the city. Also making it a living breathing city that actually feels it’s alive would be great.
@BoldAndBrash i agree , the swinging is overrated as ***** & they need to do something with it , make it like TASM movies that clearly showed it takes momentum to swing and add physics that let spider-man run along walls and do flips to maintain speed and go even faster . i always said they should add a speed meter to his web swinging and let us build up speed to swing fast as hell and basically glide through the city if we wanted to . it would take skill , be fun & rewarding but nah $ony plays it so safe like a lot of games nowadays . no new ideas
Had no idea about Kraven. He could also be working on potential DLC chapters.
Still hyped for this game, hoping we get a 2023 showcase by Summertime.
@CKFilms @Cherip-the-Ripper Kraven was the narrator in the reveal trailer.
@Ooccoo_Jr I suspect it will be New York again. I'm hoping there is a new location, may through some sort of inter dimensional portal or may be Spidey take a trip on a flight somewhere, hunter home country.
This’ll be a full-price purchase I won’t regret.
@nomither6 just go old school and swing from the clouds (stars)? Lol naw but there are other cities with tons of sky scrapers out there
Ready for this! Can’t wait to play it. The traversal in the first game was so ridiculously fun I RARELY ever used the fast travel which, in and of itself, is rare for me to do.
@WolfyTn id be down with swinging from the stars , spider-man ps1 is goated 😂 a classic
@ROTTIEMAN16 no I just didn't pay 70 quid for them
I'm pretty confident this will be great as the other Spidey games have been fantastic, IMO. I just hope you can play as Venom, even if it's just after the main story.
