Sony has made customisation a big part of the PS5 experience, between its physical face plates and spectrum of DualSense controller colours. In a cute and unexpected update, it’s allowing fans to keep its decorative designs consistent, as it’s added hues like Starlight Blue, Nova Pink, Cosmic Red, Galactic Purple, and Midnight Black to the app’s list of appearance options.
While a very, very minor thing, this effectively allows you to pair up the colour scheme of your app with your favourite PS5 shade. We’re being a little presumptuous here, but we wouldn’t be surprised if these colours also got added as customisation options on the console itself in a future firmware update. Fans have, after all, been clamouring for themes, and this would at least allow for a little more personalisation.
You’ll need to update the app to access the new colours, and you can find the option to select one in the app’s settings. Which colour will you be choosing? Let us know in the comments section below.

Lol the app got themes before the console itself 🤦🏻♂️
Whoever took those screenshots needs to charge their phone!
What's with these console makers? (Nin/PS) We have themes and folders then on the next console they're gone. Then Nintendo puts voice chat on the mobile app but not the console, now Sony is putting some customisation on the app but not the console
@Bentleyma 32% is okay for a bit!
What version of the app has that option? Mine shows last updated Dec 2, 2022, and I don't have that option - but it also shows no updates available. Version 22.11.1 (which looks like a date-driven version number to me).
Might be worth specifying if you've verified this is available on all platforms, or if so far it's just an iOS or Android thing.
The app is pretty nice!
Just let us use our screenshots as the background on our PS5s Sony, damn your eyes
I'd like to be able to change the colour of the light on front of the console & on the controller been wanting them to let you do that since PS4 lol
As a Xbox and PS5 owner, i have both apps on my iPhone and the PS App smashes the Xbox out of the water. I like this clean minimalist look sony has with it. Themes don’t matter much to me, but i really like the simplicity and functionality of the PS app.
@Green-Bandit I do like the PS App and use it a lot more recently. They've definitely improved it a lot over the last few years.
@RobN Exactly. Not seeing any update on my (android). Only appearance options are system, dark, and light still.
@carlos82 My guess is having folders holding loads of apps maybe effects performance of the main screen. Plus it was also a feature that didn't seemed to used by enough people. Honestly the amount of people who screenshoted their main menu on PS4 didn't use folders.
@get2sammyb agreed, it has trimmed the fat so to say and just streamlined what it needs to be and does it so well. I tip my cap to sony on the work done, Microsoft needs to retool their app, it’s not good at the moment and i am just as big of a xbox fan as i am PlayStation, so no bias here, again Job well done team Blue.
@Green-Bandit Yup, the Xbox app is slow, convoluted, and missing lots of features, for instance the Store.
PS app is nearly perfect imo.
Where and how do you change the colour exactly? I can’t find it anywhere
@eagletrippin
Yeah, also not seeing any update on my iPhone (U.K.).
@IOI i agree 100% , at this point MS needs to redo most of the Xbox App. Sony’s App right now really impresses me. Certainly of the better I’ve seen. I am an Apple fanatic and one thing i like about apple is ease of use and less bloat. Something Samsung Google and Microsoft rarely get right for my uses.
No update here in the states.. the app in the App Store mentions it but the app itself is fully updated and not showing the new colors
@get2sammyb
How is Japanese Rail Sim: Journey to Kyoto?
@XinGViruS It's fun, but the problem is it's FMV so it feels less like you're controlling a train and more like you're controlling a video feed.
The Appearance option is available on the app but its doesn’t match any colours, basically only the option for light or dark.
Some screenshots on where exactly to find the colour options either on PS5 or app would have probs been helpful. Can’t see anything on the PS5 for this :/
“ Sony has made customisation a big part of the PS5 experience”
-No themes
-No folders
-No custom themes that let you use your own pictures adjacent to your premium theme
-Account profile colors on console are gone
-Custom controllers don’t even compare to Xbox Custom Labs
and i probably forgot something & didn’t even mention the features that aren’t customization that they took away
@Green-Bandit what’s wrong with the xbox app ? seems to have more features and customization to me
@WolfyTn
I have the color options. I'm in the United States and my app updated itself yesterday, 1/26.
@nomither6 a little to cluttered and had issues with select features on it. Haven’t opened it in a month honestly, and i play my Series X daily. I ain’t saying it awful, but it could use some touch up’s and look a little more modern for my liking. I’d still give it a 6 maybe a 7 out of 10, while i would score the PS app a 9 out of 10 and again i play my PS5 twice a week, while playing my Xbox daily, so i ain’t bias to either, just my thought on the apps.
@Luminous117 @RobN I'm on Android, my app version is 23.1.2 and the options are there for me. This update has been out for almost a month going off the version number. I wonder why it's so all over the place with the rollout. If you're on Android, is it Android 13?
@nomither6 My thoughts too - Sony have got a LONG way to go in terms of sorting out that god awful UI!
The PS4 UI is near perfect - why did they feel the need to ruin it?
The PS5 UI is a masterpiece in terrible design, it actively pushes users to use features that the corporation wants high usage on, to justify the flawed design itself.
Most users just want to be able to play a game with no fuss, exit a game with no fuss & have a way of organising their game library that suits them.
This was all present on the last console, so we have taken a giant leap backwards with regard to the interface.
Sony really are treating their loyal customers like dirt.
Probably the only possible thing to make PS5 themes tbh
The "device" is your phone you muppets. It will match light or dark theme.
