Sony's latest look at the PS Store sales charts for the month of December 2022 has revealed that not every newer PS5, PS4 game sold so well digitally on its online marketplace. While The Callisto Protocol did well in sixth place across the USA, Canada, and Europe, Marvel's Midnight Suns only managed 14th in the USA and Canada and didn't chart all within Europe.
Other PS5, PS4 titles from last month include Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, which landed in 10th place in all the regions Sony tracks. The results for Need for Speed Unbound were better, though, which took eighth in the USA and Canada, but then was then up in fourth spot in Europe. The new PS5 version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt handed the RPG a sales boost in the USA and Canada — up to 13th and an impressive fifth in Europe — while the stalwart Elden Ring hovered around the lower end of the top 10.
In terms of the best-selling digital PS5, PS4 games for December 2022, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and FIFA 23 dominated the top two spots on both platforms, handing over the winner's medal between regions. The free-to-play chart is made up of the usual suspects: Fortnite, Warzone 2, Overwatch 2, and Rocket League. Meanwhile, Beat Saber and Job Simulator were the best-selling PSVR titles. It'll be interesting to see what that chart looks like once PSVR2 comes to town next month.

I think 10th is pretty solid for Crisis Core. It beat a Marvel game. I don't think it was ever supposed to break records. Glad they made it though.
Midnight Suns is a gem of a game. I put off playing it until after the holidays and am now completely hooked on the battle, socialize, explore loop. Not sure what the soft sales mean for future Marvel adaptations that try for something different, but I’m glad we’ve got this to enjoy.
Does grabbing the free upgrade to Witcher 3 PS5 count as a sale? I grabbed it and downloaded it, as I suspect many who own the PS4 version did, but didn't pay anything, so I wouldn't expect that to count as a sale. Then again, I had to add it to my cart and check out my $0 order, so maybe it is a sale.
When they talk about downloads, it makes sense that installing it would trip the download counter, but when they talk about sales for something with a free upgrade, it's confusing to me.
@RobN No, PS4 to PS5 upgrades aren't counted in these charts. It's purely sales.
Shame about Midnight Suns as its really good.
The $70 price tag really kills new game sales, especially for games like midnight suns. It's already being reduced to $46 and I'd bet it would have had more lifetime sales if they had released at the $50-60 range. Personally, I don't pay more than $30 for a game.
December always has been a difficult time to release so I'm not too surprised to see some slow sales. Surprising to see Calisto Protocol did so well for itself though with the lukewarm reception it got though.
@Amnesiac I totally agree with you. Wanted to buy myself a Christmas present and took the gamble on Midnight Suns. Like you say that game is very addicting. Hope to see the sales pick up and we see more fun games like that
I remember how much I love The Witcher 3 but didn’t remember that I love it enough to have backseated Ragnarok to play The Witcher 3 and go for my 4th platinum for the game. Favorite game of all time!
Well, despite the fact that many people of this site hated Callisto Protocol, it seems that it was the best selling brand new game... I like it, not more than Midnight Suns, but many people outside here, bought it, such is power of marketing... so, it is not a flop. despite the combat mechanics and else, Callisto Protocol it does have got one of the best visuals, ambient and sound in a next gen game.
It's almost like an extreme jump in cost of living that saw curtailed discretionary spending across the board coupled with price increases in video games and digital prices that are out of step with reality could have affected the sales volume of video games in December.
I was really hoping Callisto Protocol sold well because I cant wait for a sequel. I thought it was a great game and with the advice of playing on Easy it was super fun!
Dang Midnight Sun's getting a lot of praise here. I remember the reviews being middling so I passed but I'm a turn based tactics guy so it sounds like I should try it during the next sale.
I really like midnight suns, but if poor sales means we’ll see xcom 3 then I’m fine with that.
@Trundlebuddy totally agreed! MS is reduced to £40 in some stores around the UK (argos) and seems to have sold out at every one near me, but you best believe there's plenty of stock in all the shops that are selling it for 50-70!
We're in a recession, after 12 or so years of austerity... people can't afford to throw 70 quid at every good game that's out, or no one would have cash to eat!
@NEStalgia bingo!
@NEStalgia
Very well said.
@Amnesiac amazing isn't it ? One of my games of the year '22
@ILikeStake you really should treat yourself to Midnight Suns - it's fantastic, one of the best games of '22
@Loamy I need to buy this just waiting on a sale
Midnight Suns was my GOTY so hopefully it can pick up some steam.
Crisis Core Reunion was a terrific remaster!
Midnight suns released way too late in the year. It missed black friday.
I was interested, but decided to leave it for later and picked up some better deals.
Callisto is a great example how graphics and forced diversity do nothing. Most likely my last pre order. Game was an utter embarrassment bruv
I had to pay £20 for The Witcher 3 again.
Worth. Every. Penny.
@Loamy I purposely waited on NFS only because I wanted to see if there was going to be MTX since the last one had them but since it doesn't im very much inclined to buy it now. I do want both though, I haven't played a good horror or racing game in a while. DeadSpace is coming out but I played the original when it came out so im not so much interested in playing it again but great experience.
@J2theEzzo yall just dont know how to budget lol. i work make ***** pay. was making $8 bucks an hour, bought all my games full price. pay for car insurance, lights, water, rent, groceries, gas in the car, plus had a gf at the time too went out and still could buy full price 60 dollar games on ps4 gen. js everyone who always says that it cant be done if i can at 8 bucks an hour on my own with no gov assistance or help then anyone can lmao no excuses.
@SerJosh97 I mean, I guess I could, but also, I'm not so eager to play games day 1 (generally speaking), that I'd spend that much, when I have a huge backlog to get me through until the games I want are a little lower in price? Elden Ring was a day 1 purchase, but it was also only £40. I also have a job, girlfriend, pay bills, etc. So my game-time is fairly limited, and that means I don't see the same value in spending £60 on a game that, by time I get through it, will probably be retailed 10-20 quid cheaper.
Course, if I booked a week off and locked myself in to exclusively play a game I was excited for, maybe I'd consider getting it at that price.
