PlayStation is synonymous with two racing properties in particular: Gran Turismo and WipEout. Of course, the former is very much on the side of simulating real-life racing, while the latter is a full-on sci-fi speed-fest. They may be on opposite ends of the spectrum, but you can still enjoy both — as Neill Blomkamp demonstrates.
The District 9 director has revealed that he's a WipEout fan ahead of the release of his big screen Gran Turismo adaptation later this year. Replying to a tweet from the official account for Over Jump — an indie project looking to capture the feel of old school rally titles — Blomkamp teases his appreciation for the anti-gravity racer.
"@NeillBlomkamp should definitely do a Wipeout movie next! Imagine what kind of cyberpunk dystopian world would have such races!" writes Over Jump. Blomkamp responds: "I lovvvvvvvved Wipeout".
He's forgotten about the capital 'E' in WipEout there, but we're prepared to overlook such an error since the man clearly has good taste.
And to be fair, a WipEout movie could be pretty cool — although the CG budget would likely need to be astronomical.

Honestly shocked he didn't make a wipEout movie instead of a Gran Turismo one considering sci-fi is his thing
Edit: Never mind i get why he's making a GT movie since he directed this advert if we don't get a car robot cameo in this movie i will lose it

Not Riiiiiiidge Raaaaaaaacer?
A WipEout movie sounds like a way better idea than Gran Turismo. Wtf sony!
Let this be a reminder that we need a new WipEout for PS5/PSVR2.
The idea of a WipEout movie is pretty cool, but yeah, just the mention of it makes we yearn for a brand new entry on PS5. It'd be so good.
A Wipeout movie would've been amazing I think! Loved the franchise since the beginning but no other game has made me realize I was getting old & losing some reflexes more than Wipeout. Used to be able to play on Elite without problems, now I can barely beat the beginning races on easy ugh! 😂
@JohnnyShoulder your avatar and comment combined are beautiful
@LordAinsley Ha Ha that is almost the perfect marriage. It is how I wake up every morning.
A WipEout animated series, Edgerunners style, would be incredible.
As long he doesn't give Die Antwoord roles again, they were pretty normal in Chappie compared to their music videos.
It would make a better movie no doubt. Hey Sony Wipeout on PS5 please and include VR
F-Zero is better , not even up for debate
I've never played any of the games before, but would definitely watch a Wipeout movie!
A new Wipeout game would be great , especially given Nintendo’s now-chronic inability to provide a new F-Zero game, or even a port of F-Zero GX. If I am not mistaken, the recently-acquired Firesprite studio has connections to Studio Liverpool, so there you go!
While I don't care what big people in hollywood or whatever care for about gaming cool I guess?
A WipEout movie like Speed Racer or others would be cool. A Ridge Racer one or a new game would be nice too Namco....
I think the GT movie is fair it's not a racing politics, racing team underdogs/historical racing figures or an action movie with cars as props it's a gamer/average person to the esports to IRL racing which I know happens IRL because of Polyphony but still. But with so cringey romance elements I'm going to laugh or look away just like many anime no one thinks gaming or racing drivers and romance make sense in a movie and it's best as the rare thing that does happen in real life for some people (besides a trope of wishful-fillment for others that's a bit much) but not enough to be in media.
WipEout Rush being what it is we aren't seeing the series again at this rate even besides F Zero or inspired futuristic racing games outside those that are there of your Redout, Fast Racing, Xenon and more (the management idea is cool like GT B Spec I just don't want to play a game on mobile and am making it clear to Sony the platform is the problem and the business model I don't want to play or not play because it's a management game, an arcadey futuristic racing game on a platform with too many of them competing when console has an audience for them already reviving them like 3D platformers have a revival right now, why not cover the space on console or is it 'too lacking in sales' for them to bother, it's niche but they put it on phones thinking it will do well among 100s more competitors futuristic, kart or arcade real car racing games what a great idea, sigh).
