Just announced and releasing next week on PS5, The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition is being officially referred to as a remaster — and going by these new screenshots, we suppose it's easy to see why.
The role-playing game, which originally released for PS4 back in 2019, has been given a surprisingly significant graphical overhaul. Press materials cite improvements to character models and environmental textures, as well as reworked lighting. The re-release will also boast a brand new dynamic weather system, which should help spice up your exploration of alien planets. The whole thing will run in 4K at 60 frames-per-second on Sony's current-gen console.
Anyway, here are the aforementioned screenshots in all of their 4K glory. The enhanced visuals are immediately noticeable, adding some welcome depth to the game's already colourful locales.

This is one I wanted to try back when it originally launched, but never quite got around to it.
I'll keep an eye on this come Black Friday, hopefully it'll drop to half price or better around then.
Should be much better loading times. I'm spoiled by the SSD. I feel bad for the PS4 peeps when Hogwarts Legacy comes out for that...
Is this a free upgrade?
Main question for many)
@Splat Yeah the press release mentions improved load times, too.
@Blacksmith1985 No, it's a small upgrade cost if you already own the game and its expansions on PS4 (under £10/$10).
good game i will play it again and i haven't played the dlc
@ShogunRok thanks.
Not the worst scenario, at least. (Persona 5).
I'll upgrade 100%.
Surprised that Microsoft also launched it for PS5.
@IOI Fallout4 will also receive PS5 upgrade, same as Doom Eternal and Skyrim did.
There's nothing new with this title.
@IOI Publishing rights are owned by Private Division. MS didn't have a choice in the matter.
Being able to level up to 99 is going to allow for some broken builds.
So this developer is owned by Xbox, still a PS5 remaster?
@ShogunRok I need to buy the expansions then. Paying 10$ is better than paying full price. Will definitely upgrade and play it.
Can you upgrade if you don't have the expansions?
@IOI I'm not - they stated they would continue to support ALL games released and/or releasing on Playstation regardless of whether they 'own' those Studio's, those IP's etc.
The Outer Worlds released on PS and was 'continually' supported with DLC 'after' MS purchased Obsidian so it makes sense to continue 'supporting' that game and/or those gamers that bought on PS. OW2 may not come to PS, but this did so its going to be 'supported'.
@Robocrop_Duster It doesn't look like you can. A graphic the publisher released specifically says the upgrade applies to owning the base game and the two expansions.
Still need to get the second expansion, but I'm glad they're doing the upgrade thing AND being clear about how to actually do it and what is required.
Worth it I suppose if you haven't played it. However it's a cash grab regardless. I mean this game is like 3 or 4 years old.
It's an decent albeit simplified fallout clone/borderlands Mashup.
I must say though, these screens look Pretty good!
@Athrum no

@BAMozzy That's not true. Psychonauts 2 never got a ps5 version or even HDR on Playstation. They are supporting the games you mentioned because someone else has the publishing rights.
@mvhess Microsoft owns the publishing rights ,they have the say whether it's on ps or not

Bittersweet since we (ps5) will never see the sequel. Loved the game, gave me what I wanted from a Fallout game.
Loved this game. I played it again last year for the platinum and the hardest difficulty trophy was good fun considering you can skip half of the game and the last boss through dialogue options. Sadly though, I lost Parvati near the beginning of the game to perma-death.
@mvhess Not true, any game owned by Microsoft already on Playstation is still supported by them on PS5, including Minecraft, Elder Scrolls, FallOut, Dishonored and The Outer Worlds.
@Athrum Private Division only own the publisher rights to the original 2019 version of the game. Publisher rights for this remaster are owned by Microsoft.
@Acurisur Yup, Martsmall already linked the article above.
@Acurisur how exactly have fallout 4 and Dishonored been supported. These haven't been updated since Microsoft bought Zenimax. It's a case by case basis clearly. Minecraft has always been multiplatform and is an online title so of course its supported. As I said Psychonauts 2 doesn't have hdr on Playstation and the Outer Worlds was published by Take Two. They aren't just blanketly supporting Playstation ports.
But people who brought it on PS4 won't get a PS5 treatment? I've held out on this game for so long because I know when it comes to DLC it's unwise to buy day one but this PS5 version looks promising somewhat, hope the price is not too expensive and expect a £60 price tag 😑😑 we shall see on this one
@ShogunRok and this is the reason why I held out, hope it's worth it and not too expensive for 1st time buyers
@ApostateMage I played it on my laptop briefly but left it at that and did not continue, I would like to be able to experience the whole game with its best choice but I hope it's not a greedy experience lol
Not sure if I will jump into this again or not. I enjoyed it, but it was slightly underwhelming.
One of my biggest complaints will be at least helped by this version though, which would be the constant and lengthy load times. I still remember walking through a door, only to wait roughly 2 minutes just to have to immediately walk through another door and wait another roughly 2 minutes. It's clear their engine or just game design in general needed a lot of work, as this was more than just the technical limitations of the consoles holding it back. It was extremely rare to experience a game last generation with as many loading screens as this game had.
I finished it, so obviously I still liked it in the end. I also do have a feeling I would like it better with the load times not getting in the way.
@mvhess I didn't say Fallout 4, I said Fallout, as in the series. So Fallout 76 would be the game being updated on PS5. Dishonoured doesn't need an update but it also wasn't pulled from the store either.
The Outer Worlds is no longer published by Take two, try reading what other people have been posting. Only the original version had Take Two as the publisher, this remaster has Microsoft as the publisher. You should be thankful that all of these titles get any support at all when they're owned by a direct competitor.
@Acurisur I should be happy that Microsoft is buying up these huge companies with a long history of multiplatform games because they updated a few games that were already on Playstation?
@Splat You'd be surprised what a decent SSD inside the Pro's SATA 3 is capable of. Load times are significantly reduced - not PS5 fast but quick enough so you can only get a quick sip of your cuppa.
Only major difference is the bandwidth with the 5 transmitting the same number of bits at a faster rate than the old stager.
@ShogunRok thanks. the end of the trailer said all dlc was coming with this edition so I thought maybe.
Definitely looks deserving of a $10 upgrade!
