Genshin Impact is the game that never stops growing, and that means there’s tons to look forward to in the title’s imminent 3.6 update. As an overview, you can look forward to new character banners, events, minigames, and even an entirely new area to explore – yeah, we hope your backlog isn’t bulging, because it’s about to put on the backburner.
First up, there’s the debut of the Akademiya Extravaganza: “Booths will be set up at the Gala and six different minigames will be offered, each designed by one of the Six Darshans to showcase their research interests and achievements. For example, Layla’s Rtawahist Darshan applies the study of stars to a minigame involving an astrolabe, in which players control it to form special constellations and light up the stars.”
But perhaps of greater interest to long-time players will be the new area: “Far beyond the grand celebration in Sumeru City, a new area consisting of wastelands and an oasis has been revealed deep within the desert. This area has been damaged by Gray Crystals and corruptive Purple Mists. According to the legends, this place was one of the main battlefields during the Khaenri’ah cataclysm five hundred years ago. Fortunately, visiting Travelers are accompanied on their visit by Pari, creatures unique to the oasis. Using their ability to fly, Travelers can reach unreachable areas and thereby discover mysteries.”
Of course, there’ll be a couple of new Banners with brand new characters to boot: Baizhu and Kaveh. “The five-star Catalyst wielder, Baizhu, is a benevolent doctor with the power of Dendro, capable of driving wandering sprites and raising a Seamless Shield to heal the team,” the blurb explains. “Another new playable character, Kaveh, is a four-star Dendro Claymore wielder. Known as the Light of Kshahrewar, Kaveh is a talented architect in Sumeru. His architectural toolbox, Mehrak, will trigger all Dendro Cores and cause them to burst by scanning the battlefield. This enhances Kaveh’s combat efficiency with Dendro damage.”
And that’s all in addition to some new battles, too. Apep, the Dragon of Verdure, will be available as a weekly boss in the Trounce Domain, while you’ll find new Hilichurl foes to contend with as well. There’s tons to dig into here, then – almost too much, to be honest – and with Honkai: Star Rail right around the corner, well, RIP your free time.

I'm never going to catch up!
Glad to see Baizhu and Kaveh on the same banner, makes for a much more lucrative summon session.
Kinda sucks it's in phase 2. But that's more time to save primos.
Whenever people talk about Primos, I always get this song stuck in my head!
Nahida rerun! Already have her and her weapon but I'm on a guarantee so might have to go for her C2.
@get2sammyb - No rush, you'll get there and if need be you can quick start most regional events nowadays. How far in are you now?
@Shigurui I'm a little way into Liyue now.
@get2sammyb - Right, still plenty to do then. I'm at a similar point on my US account. At least you can actually go to Sumeru and start unlocking the map waypoints. Not like Inazuma where you're progress blocked.
Genshin livestream codes (only last 16 hours)
Now I need to quit this game Two and a half years and counting
@Shigurui Part of me wishes I had waited until it was all released and just played it at the end start to finish. But it would be a VERY different experience. Thinking of doing this for Honkai: Starrail to be honest. Can't get pulled into another live service game with dailies for years. At least then it's finite.
@themightyant - I'm glad I jumped in day one, with all those free fates we got in the first few weeks I got a free Keqing and Venti on top of a load of 4* like Bennett. Speaking of characters I've had a run of crazy luck on my US account. In 115 pulls I've got Cyno, Mona, Xiao and I just got Ayaka who I can't use because Inazuma is still locked lol.
As for Honkai I'm not touching it. I play Genshin and Division 2 daily, not starting another service or gacha game ever! Btw those codes last for 16 hours.
@Shigurui Nice! I also had insane luck recently as a F2P, especially as I never aim for constellations on 5 stars really, at least not on first run. But on my main account i've won the 50:50 6 times in a row. Got C1 Nahida in 1 tenpull and recently got C1 Shenhe and C2 Mika in 37 pulls when I wasn't even near pity. I'm due some very bad luck soon! lol
But i'm at the point where I really don't need many more characters. Besides Raiden National and Hyperbloom Ayato + Kuki kills everything in the Abyss! But I won't use the weapon banner, it's bait!
But can't break the dailies for some reason!
@themightyant - I have mad luck on the weapon banners, I never touched them until Yelan released. I couldn't lose on that one, set the path for Aqua and got Lost Prayer and Jade Spear which I wanted for my Xiao, those 2 gave me the points needed for guaranteed Aqua. All in 40 pulls! I've since got Nahida's catalyst, Yoimiya's bow and Mistsplitter Reforged for Ayaka without a loss. I know it won't hold forever though lol.
Even have decent luck on the standard, I've got a R3 Wolf's Gravestone on Diluc and got the Amos' for my Ganyu recently. Good mention on Raiden, I don't have her, think I'll keep my guarantee for her next banner, cheers!
@Shigurui Crazy luck. I do OCASSIONALLY use the weapon banner but i've had mixed results. I've got engulfing lightning for Raiden, Redhorn Stonethresher for Itto, Staff of Homa for whoever/Zhongli. I think those are the only signature weapons I have. Standard banner i've been FAR luckier Aquila Favounia x2 (Bennett & Jean), R3 Wolfs Gravestone, PJW Spear, Lost prayer for Yae-Miko, Skyward Atlas & Harp. Could do with Amos Bow though.
Though on my other account I have 3 x Primordial Jade Winded Spear and that's about it! I haven't refined it as I have too many spear characters it's good on and almost no other 5 star weapons.
I'm currently on 74 pity on standard banner and debating whether to wait for 3.6 to have the chance for Dehya, or whether to vote now and skip that altogether. I know she's not meta/good but might be fun! Would prefer Tighnari or Keqing though. Might wish now. Flip/Flop. Will probably end up with C4 Qiqi. It's not all good luck!
Enjoy.
@themightyant I've gone down this rabbit hole, probably never to return. I'm running a Keqing main with an aggravate team and she absolutely melts stuff, I love her. I have Tighnari at 90 and I'm working on a quicken team for him, but he's pretty fun to play if you can stack a ton of energy regen on him. I also somehow got lucky enough to get Ayaka and can't decide if I want to go for a freeze or melt team. My soul is lost. I play Genshin now. NES doesn't understand.
@SplooshDmg congratulations! And commiserations. Lol. Welcome to the duality that is Genshin. At times I think this is one of the the best games I’ve ever played, other times I lament I ever started. It’s just a time sink and like anime it has the equivalent of filler arcs. But it’s more good than bad.
I have Keqing on my second account. She’s a lot of fun especially since Dendro gave her a HUGE buff. She was fun but weak before. Still no Tignari though. I’d like to get him. Enjoy!
I probably need to walk away for a bit but 3.6 is a pretty bit update. Maybe after that I’ll take a break till Fontaine which is due July/August if the same cadence remains. That’s when the game is at its best. New lands to explore, new archon quests. Etc.
@themightyant At first glance, I really thought it was just some gacha money pit. Then I realized, IT IS a gacha money pit, but it is also extremely fun. I don't feel many games have character building and combat that is nearly as fun as this game. Now that I'm caught up with the Archon quests and I've burnt all my fragile resin I had accumulated, I'm not playing nearly as much. It's just fun to have something to log in and work on little by little each day. It's just such a satisfying game, even if it feels a waste of time.
@SplooshDmg The thing a lot of people forget is for most gacha, lootbox etc. games to be successful is they HAVE to be good games underneath it all, at their core, otherwise people have little incentive to come back again and again.
There is a little sunk cost fallacy and other addictive traits involved, but they also have to be good to grab you immediately.
Genshin IS a really fun game but it's also a gacha money pit. Like you I play less than I used to. Just do my dailies for about 15 mins most of the time, and then weeklies and events for around an hour on the weekends. If I want to play more I do, but I try to push back and play other things. It's only really at launches of new content like 3.6 that I dedicate my time and am happy to.
As for a waste of time... aren't all games? Isn't all tv/media/sport? End of the day if you having fun it's OK in my book. There's a really good video game magazine/book series called 'A Profound Waste of Time' I think that phrase captures it perfectly.
@Shigurui The luck ended, at least on standard banner. I got C4 Qiqi. To be honest I quite want C6 now, "revives all fallen party members nearby and regenerates 50% of their HP." lol (inhales copium)
@themightyant I think something clicked for me with a lot of today's really popular games. Genshin is a game that honestly doesn't demand lots of time all at once, but just lots of time over the course of forever. In a way, it just makes sense for gamers in today's busy world. It's more satisfying to fire Genshin up for 30 minutes, do some domains or bosses, then log out. As opposed to trying to dig into a 40 hour epic, and you only maybe have 30-45 minutes a day to play. In a way, it's been kind of liberating because I don't feel so committed to finishing all of these enormous stories all the time now. I got 30 hours into P5R and just turned it off, because it's just Persona 5 again (mostly), and I just don't have 100+ hours for this stuff anymore.
@themightyant - Oof, that's a kick in the stones. I'm only up to C2 Qiqi and oddly enough they all came from 50/50 losses. I got 4 Diluc's from standard making him C4 (one from 50/50 loss), then Jean broke my Diluc streak and I got a Keqing dupe last time I pulled a character on standard. Good luck on that C6 though, or not lol.
@SplooshDmg - Go freeze Ayaka, you often can't melt all her hits and its a lot more DPS efficient hitting frozen targets. Melt is great against large stuff that isn't moving much but if enemies are kiting around the place you can miss out on a lot of burst DPS.
@Shigurui Will do. I was thinking of maybe running Xingqiu, Rosaria, and maybe Barbara. I really wish I had Shenhe for this team, but considering I just got Ayaka, I don't expect to get lucky enough to pull Shenhe on this banner.
@SplooshDmg - You can't go wrong with Xingqiu and Rosaria, Barbara is fine for heals but her hydro application isn't the greatest, still it all helps. Great thing about Ayaka is she's really easy to put together. No need to go over 40% on crit rate with the Strayer set and the Amenoma is great if you don't have a 5* weapon for her. She's a blast to play. Have fun!
@Shigurui Yup! I've nearly completed a legendary strayer set for her, and my Amenoma is up to refinement rank 3. So we're getting her there. I had just funneled all my resources into leveling my Tighnari quicken team, and then I pulled Ayaka, so I'm working on next to nothing until the next battle pass. 😅
@SplooshDmg - Nice, I had R3 Amenoma on her for ages until I got Mistsplitter recently but I still use it on her when I give Mistsplitter to Alhaitham or Keqing. Really solid weapon. It looks amazing on her too.
