Demonstrating the enormous impact of HBO’s adaptation, The Last of Us: Part 2 was February 2023’s best-selling digital download for PS4 in both North America and Europe. That’s despite the game originally releasing almost three years ago now – an undeniably incredible result, showcasing renewed interest in Naughty Dog’s survival series as a whole.
The Last of Us: Part I also performed pretty well, rising up the PS5 charts to sixth and seventh position in North America and Europe respectively – and even The Last of Us Remastered charted in ninth in North America on the PS4. All of this underlines what Sony’s new PS Productions division is trying to achieve: great television is driving profound interest in the organisation’s software releases.
The television show has been steadily growing its audience with each new instalment, and this weekend’s finale is expected to attract the most viewers yet – despite competition with the Oscars. Of course, this all bodes well for Sony’s in-development The Last of Us multiplayer game, which is being billed as one of Naughty Dog’s most ambitious projects to date.

I hope they change the plot of 2 for television because I’m not sure that torture, revenge, ptsd, murdering countless people and more reverse revenge will go over too well.
Great! I like the series as well as the games, the more the merrier! Hurry up with that multiplayer thing Naughty Dog!
A masterclass in how to market an IP.
And you just know FOMO culture will drive people towards the new Factions game. The steamers will all be playing it too no doubt.
The show just keeps on giving for Sony. It'll definitely help drive sales of the Factions game as well. Can't wait for Factions!
Give us a PS5 version please!!!!
Really curious to see how it does on PC. Wouldn't be shocked to see a mobile version this year either.
@Bunchesopuppies Season 1 has mostly covered these bullet points.
I'd rather ask if subversive and challenging story telling will go over well with the gaming crowd, but it should work well with most HBO audiences.
@tameshiyaku I thought this too, TV audiences seem generally down for those twists and turns. Maybe it's the interactivity element in games that makes you more attached to characters and thus less happy when someone loses a game of golf.
@WizzNL
Part II dramatically improves the gameplay loop of the first game. And its stealth is the biggest redesign. IMO, it’s the best balance between stealth and third person shooting on the market.
It’s a brilliant gameplay exercise bogged down with writing and pacing issues. But even with those writing issues it’s still a pretty compelling story.
Redemption arc
But more seriously, I had no interest in TLOU Pt1 when it was announced or released. But off the back of the show i'm going to play it and finally get round to TLOU2.
@WizzNL the game is good play it. The story is well written as well go in with an open mind.
" wo WoKE Go BrOke uuuuh dudhududha pfffff duhhhh"
@Bunchesopuppies apart from " important scene in part 2,.if they change anything people(players) will be out with pitchforks, and if the scene in part 2 is changed or remade they may aswell just call it something else and move on, too many important parts and moving parts in tlou2 to change
@WizzNL Story quality is debatable. Personally I thought it was full of plot holes. I can appreciate what the writers were going for and thought they mostly nailed it, but I thought they could have got there in a more intelligent, and possibly a more emotionally impactful, way. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those rabid detractors who 'hated' the game, I enjoyed it a lot, but thought Part 1 had a much better story.) I recommend you play it for yourself, and maybe you'll see what I mean.
@Clankylad I'd have thought they could easily fill in Season 2 of the TV show by showing us what happened in-between Part 1 and Part 2 of the games. That sort of time jump makes more sense in gaming, or even a sequel to a feature film, but I'd have thought it would be more jarring in a TV show.
Maybe people are getting the games now as they are watching the show and feel they would rather be playing the games? The show is OK but isn't the best thing since sliced bread that the internet seems to think it is. Just my opinion of course.
I was one of those people who acquired part 2 in February. It was very much worth the £8. The reviews on this game make it seems like a Marmit game (you either love it or hate it). For my penny: it's probably the best game I've played in a very long time and I thought it was better then the first.
Ya, I picked it up for 12 bucks CAD. Now I'm just waiting on a deep discount for Part 1 on PS5 then I'll be all set to play these games for the first time.
Definitely a good pickup for $9.95. If I had paid full price I might have thought otherwise. Game was WAAAAAY too long for it's own good but definitely well-written and entertaining for the first solid playthrough. The second playthrough for platinum felt a little like a chore though.
@Shepherd_Tallon I think that summarizes everything I hate about everything very nicely 😂
@GamerStation257 wait, what?
Gameplay better than the 1st and I didn't mind the story, like many seemed to.
Pacing was off though. Just dragged on and on annnnnddd on... by about the halfway point I was willing it to end, but it just kept going!.
Length of 1st game was perfect, 2nd one was way too long imo.
It was also on sale for $9.99 here in the U.S.
@MayaMousavi
Was going to comment the exact same thing, the plot of Last of Us 2 probably wouldn't even crack the top 10 of disturbing/bleak content that channel has aired in the past.
I think if Sammy saw a bloke downtown wearing a Last Of Us shirt, he'd write an article about it
It was £8 and sold a few more, sweet... Still a ***** follow up to one of the best games of a generation
@CaptainPeg-Leg Golf lol 😂
@DETfaninATL try platinuming the last of us remastered… woof.
So does everyone still hate this game or has it gained a bit of a cult following? I definitely remember thinking okay why am i spending so much time playing as this other extremely unlikable person? Where the hell is Ellie? I kept asking myself while struggling to hold my interest until the end.
Ultimately i decided it's still good but yeah i was not loving alot of it.
@Uromastryx If they change season 2, that will definitely give fuel to those that hate it. They already say it’s garbage and if the show is changed, it’s because HBO recognized it as garbage as well and made changes.
But people on the internet told me the show was failing because it's "woke"? Just like how TLoU Part 2 was a failure (even tho it was at one point the most awarded game of all time).
@Logonogo PS5 version would be dope, especially for me since I've never played Part II yet.
@ArashiKageTaro
If they are looking at the viewership increasing with every single episode and saying the show is failing that is just straight up delusional.
@AgentGuapo I actually did. I platinumed the remaster on PS4 and didn’t mind it as much. Part of it was that I REALLY enjoyed the MP. That broke it up a bit for me in between playthroughs of the story. Part of the problem with 2 was once you knew the whole story it lost a lot of it’s appeal the second time around and wasn’t nearly as fun to play through that incredibly LOOOOOONG slog.
Just replayed it. Excellent video game. Exhausting story.
Well how many PS4 games are still a highlight game that's really selling? Seems like there wouldn't be much competition by this point.
@B80 but aren't all games that are 20+ hours too long? At least this game validated it's length. When the game forces you to play as a character you don't like and play through narrative you already know, I like most people emotionally recoiled, but it's there for a reason (they're asking you to see it from the point of view of the other).
I feel like naughty dog didn't take the easy route with this game and I'm pleased they didn't.
@Qwerty1234 Not for me, no, For example Im playing Witcher3 and around 50 hours in and no feelings of tedium that I had with TLOU2. Same with games like Skyrim, various Final Fantasy' over the years etc.
I personally had no issues playing as Abbie at all and empathized with her. It was just the gameplay loop - just grew tiresome for me, may be not for others.
Part 2 is amazing hands down it’s the best game I I’ve ever played and I like the other characters more I want to see where they could take it , the series has been awesome and it actually makes the first game better and also the second game , but I am big fan so I would say that , I get the hate to a certain extent but life is ***** sometimes so why not in games ?
