Diablo 4 has become something of a mid-year milestone we really can't wait to reach, thanks largely to positive preview coverage and the implementation of some fresh ideas. Also, it's a new Diablo game!
In an interview with PC Gamer, associate game director Joe Piepiora revealed that players are "looking at roughly 80 hours worth of time invested to complete the entirety of the Battle Pass". That might sound like a lot, but it is fairly consistent with other service title offerings such as Call of Duty or Fortnite.
It does take a little mental reframing to position hardcore, grim-as-heck ARPG Diablo as having fundamental systems in common with the colourful Fall Guys, but that's the world we live in, isn't it? Will you be diving into everything Diablo 4 offers, committing (at least) 320 hours a year to completing all four Battle Passes? Dedicate yourself to this unholy work in the comments section below.

So battle pass and not seasons? Am i missing something as i really like the seasonal ladder in d3 but if they have ditched that and opted for the battle pass which i guess will have to be purchased i'm not impressed. I'll be buying d4 without a doubt and i've been very vocal in the past about £70+ prices i may compromise on this one because its diablo but battle passes? No thanks..
@Jamesblob if you are a diablo fan you already have no respect for your free time anyway 🤣 so for me another 320 hours is just brilliant as its the game that just keeps giving value for money..not battle passes though..they suck..
Battle passes? Please don't tell me I have to pay for them otherwise I will be boycotting this game. Nothing I hate more than a full priced game asking for yet more money.
Its insane that the least appealing video game company ever thinks it’s a good idea to do one of the least appealing video game tactics ever
Battle pass was stated would be cosmetic mainly. And to put 70£ into game is okay. But then for devs to ask another around 40-50£ per year for cosmetics is so bad? Dont want cosmetics, just dont buy it. But to expect for game to generate consistent content for years, it has to be monetized.
I will wait till upcoming expansions will be sold selerately, there will be another wave of negativity xD
I am old, and I think, if I am putting 300-400-500 or even more hrs per year towards one game, maybe it deserves some extra support from my wallet if I am seeing something I like.
Given my limited play time, and awareness of ever approaching death, I avoid all live service games. Or at least don’t treat them as such. This is to ensure I experience as many different games and type of games as possible rather than getting caught up in one at the expense of all others. As such, seasons like this don’t really appeal to me. Generally I consider a game finished once I’ve completed the story and, if fun, concluded the trophy campaign. I’ll be interested in seeing the trophy campaign for this as D3 was too much of a time sink to bother with the last two trophies.
Sounds like too much work
I wont have the time for that being a Dad and full time worker, BUT nonetheless Diablo 4 is the only game I'm hyped for right now and I'll plough as much feasible time into it as I can. It seems I've stumbled into Live Service love, as I'm currently spending most of my time on Hunt Showdown & GT7
@TeapotBuddha Yes, I am glowing in the dark.
Yesterday I was trying to convince myself to be hyped for Diablo.
I love that dark fantasy setting so much.
But it's such a massive time sponge. I'd have to dedicate so much of my free time to it.
With Tears of the Kingdom out a few weeks before and then Final Fantasy a few weeks after, plus a summer project of reading the Malazan series from the beginning (I've never read it before), there's not going to be any time for this game.
Immortals of Aveum is out in July too, and I'm eager to see more of that.
Alas, Diablo is not for me.
@REALAIS are you sure? D3 keeps adding new content via the seasonal ladder and dosnt charge. Warzone adds new content but gives you the option to purchase with cash or in game tokens..games can provide extra content for years without having to charge extra if the devs or publishers can be bothered.
You can just smell the stink on this in a post Diablo immoral world....
I wouldn't be surprised to see this game so monetized and currency based that it becomes another predatory trap like the other fomo monetization schemes masquerading as games. I also wonder if this will be another recent example of further predation not being implemented during a short launch window to gain favorable reviews, only to then be more heavily introduced.
Games designed around currencies and battle passes inherently lose identity and cohernance in favor of ensuring an endless fomo based grind. It manipulates many and that's why the plague in gaming continues, but for some this has never worked and we see this exactly for what it is: Meaningless grind, based entirely on the same concepts as slot machines and the mental and physical responses of addiction.
I get it though some people get sucked in and love that endless grind, repetition, for Loot, cosmetics, watching numbers going up, and lame emotes/dances. To each their own.
Disney Dreamlight Valley has a kind of battle pass that you pay for it with the premium currency (that you also find for free once per day) but you earn almost all of it back if you complete all tasks. It probably works out that you're spending less than £1 a month for the various cosmetics. I can see D4 doing that. You rarely get some kind of premium currency from playing, invest it in a BP, then basically make it back by completing it. Or is that how BPs always work? DDV is the only game I've played with one.
Anyway, it needs to do something like this to pay for new content and support. Diablo 2 had LoD a year after release for a price so high it was complained about at the time. That was it, though, and while it got patches for years to come, nothing substantial was added. The entire endgame of D2 was Baal runs - just killing the same boss over and over again for years.
@Northern_munkey It's very meager new content, isn't it? The same areas, same enemies, just new armour sets in the seasons that they also reuse in different seasons. They also had the real money auction house, at least at first. I know they added a new area right after the expansion but you could see that as just delayed content from the expansion.
@Northern_munkey Really Warzone best stuff is for free? Dont need to buy season pass for good skins? DMZ doesnt need to pay again to unlock 4th operator slot in season 3? Doesnt need to buy full game to unlock 4th faction?
How well was D3 taken to community as game? I assume D4 will be multiple times bigger/popular in long run.
None of large MMO type games are free to play, not really. And Blizzard has huge plans for D4 to run for years to come.
@REALAIS @Matroska the point i was making was that they can provide content without attaching a price to it regardless of how meagre the content is deemed. Its still free content. Yes warzones best bits are behind a paywall but a lot of it can be unlocked via grinding out the game but it still gives a lot away for nothing. So the point i was making stands..they can provide content for free if they desire.
@Northern_munkey But there will be free tiers. Same as other games battle pass. Everything can be for "free", but sadly business is all about to make as much as possible. If I would have my own business, I wouldnt work for "free".
But okay, lets see how bad it will be whenever 1st season will drop. And battle/season pass is like "cheap", question for me, how expensive will be future expansions.
@Matroska
Dreamlight Valley doing it great by also not tell you to wait for next day/week just do them as you like.
BTW you can get all the moons back you just need to buy moons and than buy the last page over and over again.
I don't remember the amount to buy atm.
If they want me to buy a battle pass perhaps they should fix their website. I have two accounts and always get caught in a log-in loop, never actually being able to log in. It's atrocious!
@jamescrowx Yeah but there's finite tasks to do and so only so many times you can buy the stuff on the last page. Not sure if you can do it enough times to get all the moons back - though I paid a bit more to have 6 tasks on the go at once so maybe that's why.
i just see battle passes as bonus achievements
@Samholy Bonus achievements you pay for?
@pharos_haven well, unless i didnt get it for diablo 4, but usually battle passes are free and have a paid option for more loot and bonuses.
you still get stuff without paying anything. thats what i do with genshin and warzone.
I like the concept of battle passes, but I hate how they’re arbitrarily limited. I’d prefer to be able to buy a battle pass and unlock it at my leisure for the duration of the online component.
@KundaliniRising333 I also expect it to have every form of loot box, cosmetics, weapon upgrades, gem upgrades, pay to win mechanics, a premium tier on everything, and every other kind of micro-transaction they can think of. They might even throw in a real money auction house. I expect it all to be released within the first month after all the reviews are in.
This isn't the Blizzard of Yore. All those people left a long time ago.
