Resident Evil 4 has been out in the wild for a little while now, long enough for some more obscure bugs to rear their ugly heads. Case in point, Capcom has warned players of one such edge case, which can prevent players from progressing further into the game.
With sympathy to spoilers, we will remain vague on the exact particulars, but all you need to know is this: after the cutscene at the beginning of Chapter 12, you will be given a key item. Do not attack with the knife until the notification for obtaining the item has been displayed in the upper right of the screen. Thats it!
Getting too stab-happy will prevent players from being able to advance, which is obviously not ideal. Capcom says that a fix is on the way, and the issue will be resolved with a future update. We can't imagine that a majority of players are just slashing indiscriminately straight out of a cutscene, but then again, we've been surprised before.
In other Resi 4 news, abuse from internet goblins has caused Lily Gao, the voice of Ada Wong, to deactivate her Instagram account, and Capcom announced that the title shipped more than three million copies in just two short days.
What do you think of this incredibly specific game-breaking bug in Resident Evil 4? Did you encounter it, unable to stop stabbing for even a second? Seek professional help in the comments section below.

My game of the year so far and it's gonna be hard to beat, so good luck to spidey 2, ff16 or hollow knight 2
I would not have thought to have just randomly take out a knife and start stabbing or slashing at nothing after getting that key item. Really specific bug right there.
Doesn't detract from my experience, and it's still my GOTY so far for sure. Love this game.
The game is a pure joy to play
I'm surprised that Capcom hasn't. Pushed out any form of patch or issued a formal statement.
I'm not really familiar with capcom's support record. Do they commonly release and let it drift away or do they pay attention to widely reported issues and address them?
Is it futile to be waiting to pick this up in hopes that they fixes technical issues?
I want to play it, but I certainly want to play it in it best form.
@KundaliniRising333 The technical issues are minor and the game is perfectly playable and still looks really good, they are most likely saving all the big fixes for the Merc update later this week. The state of the games visuals has been blown way out of proportion mostly by those who haven't played it or DF who really exaggerated things.
How's it run on (original, not pro) ps4? Demo seemed fine but may issues elsewhere.
@nookie_egg Apparently the PS4 is not very good. I played the game all on my PS4 Pro and did not have any issues.
Here is the DF video:

@Zuljaras oh dear. Pc it is then! Thanks 👍
@KundaliniRising333 What? The article is literally pointing out Capcom talking about it
Just don't start flailing the knife at that point. That's it; game is fine otherwise.
Add another bullet point to my list of reasons not to buy games day one.
Luckily, it’s a rare bug, and Capcom themselves have reported it and promised to fix it, so kudos to them for doing the right thing. The game should be awesome when I do get around to playing it.
@WallyWest @aj21009
I'm not talking about that game crash bug whatsoever. I've held off almost entirely because of the controller responsiveness issue. Along with the secondary hope they fix visual downgrades present only in the PS5 version. I don't doubt it's playable nor that those issues are minor to others or completely unnoticed.
I'm actually completely basing the hesitation on my own personal experience with it in the demo. The controls were so bad compared to most modern releases and so off putting that I could never dial it in like I can with most titles that it led me to cancel the pre order. I cant think off another modern title that that had such an input lag feeling calibration of controls that couldn't be fixed to my preferred responsiveness with dead zone and acceleration adjustments. The only other recent game that was as bad was trying to dial in saints row when my partner complained about it after we got it for her.
With re4, when I canceled the preorder, I was pretty much done and going to wait for a steep sale until I read about it and heard that the responsiveness issues are non existent with mouse and keyboard and seem to only exist with controllers. So this is a problem that can be fixed and it goes way beyond aiming being better with mouse and keyboard. Technical evaluations of the issue have shown the problems with Xbox and ps5 specifically are the equivalent to playing a game with an over 200 ms input lag. For reference most tvs with anything over like 25ms input lag is considered not great in gaming and it's why most use game mode if available which brings the lag down to below 10ms with most good tvs.
This is just one of those things where that level of sluggishness for me personally, was immediately noticeable and a largely affects my enjoyment of a game. I want to play it for sure, just not fight against it.
I was thinking maybe some fixes would come out with the merc patch as well so hopefully thats the case. Does it have ng+?
@GodofCapcom this year is going to be hella crazy!!!
@GodofCapcom At this point, I honestly believe only Silksong can take the GOTY from Capcom, assuming it's as perfect as Hollow Knight and releases this year.
@RenanKJ @GodofCapcom GOTY for me so far has been Hogwarts legacy, but Final Fantasy XVI and Spider-Man 2 will definitely replace that for me in June and September.
Also can't forget about the Horizon Forbidden West DLC & Star Wars Jedi Survivor next month, and some misc 2023 games that don't have solid release dates yet.
@KidBoruto
I think hogwarts had a lot to improve.
@GodofCapcom Fair point, game definitely isn't for everyone.
