Bungie released Marathon in 1994, and now the name is coming back on PS5 as a "sci-fi PvP extraction shooter". Check out the trailer to get a taste of what to expect. Also coming to PC, it'll feature full cross-play and cross-save. Release is said to still be far away, but the next time we see it, gameplay will be attached.
The game is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. There's no PlayStation exclusivity despite Bungie now being owned by Sony.
Editorial lead Brian Ekberg said: "Marathon is designed from the start as a PvP-focused game and won’t have a single-player campaign. Instead, with the PvP experience as our foundation, we’re creating opportunities for player-driven stories to unfold, stories that are integrated with the overarching game narrative. We’re building a world full of persistent, evolving zones, where players create their own journey with every run they take. That might mean an unforgettable firefight against another crew vying for the same loot, or a last-second extraction while beset on all sides."

They should have called the new one Snickers
I kid you not, when this trailer started there was something about it that I thought “surely this can not be Marathon…”
Disappointed it’s not closer to the alien shooter from the old days, but I’m sure Bungie will make it fun still.
Why even bother with the marathon name? I’m sure all 11 people who played it on the Mac in 1994 are really excited
@smallbrownbike 😂😂
"sci-fi PvP extraction shooter", immediately lost interest.
No single player campaign is a shame. I'm not interested in a pvp extraction type game but I expect Bungie to do a good job on this.
Oh I thought this was going to be an actual game like the original. Nope, just a Tarkov like.
@Gremio108 brilliant 😂
@Gremio108
Brilliant
@Gremio108 Too soon, too soon.
I still call them Marathon and the less said about Starburst the better.
I hope that someday Bungie will create a single player experience. There is a genuine lack of grounded sci-fi like the original Halo trilogy. And with both Starfield and Outer Worlds lost, Bungie has a solid chance to step up!
While I would also have liked this to get a single player campaign, I just have to say that the art direction is absolutely brilliant.
I never really liked how "Halo" looks, but found the art direction in "Destiny" to be pretty phenomenal.
This looks even better.
@Intr1n5ic Same here sadly. Though I've never played the original before, nor am I a Halo fan.
Well, it’s Bungie, so at least the gameplay will be solid, regardless of whatever F2P nonsense is packed into the title
Why do some Devs just want to ram multiplater down your throat until you gag. Marathon was something that started Halo, why wouldnt you want to create something like the original. Such a missed opportunity.
Boo for no single player campaign, bungie just using their old games for ip recognition
The trailer is really good though, I know marathon (never seriously playing it) and I though this will be single player sci-fi first person halo-like games with multiplayer developed by bungie exclusively for ps5, man I was so disappointed when I found out here it doesn't have single player content.
The original Marathon and Marathon 2 were superb, great single-player modes, and genuinely exciting co-op. This looks to be everything they weren't.
Well I'm sure this and the new game from Jade Raymond's studio are the first two live service games in the list Live Service games Sony stated it had intentions to create.
Such wasted potential. I wish Live Service would go away already, but it seems I'm just an old man complaining because this is what the kids want these days. 🤦♂️
