It looks like that troubled Knights of the Old Republic remake for PS5 is still in development, for the time being, at least. That's according to the latest Embracer Group financial report, which lists the title in its announced games section.
This is something of a ray of hope for the title; when asked as recently as last week about the project, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors said: “[My] favourite question, I have no further comments." This, combined with the massive delay (not to mention changing studios), led many to believe the ambitious remake was as dead as Alderaan.
How confident are you that the KOTOR remake will come to fruition? Will we ever get the chance to make questionable decisions at Sith School again? Let us know in the comments section below.

Hope they're quietly working on it. I would like give this a go. Never got into a star wars game before.
By the time this comes out… We’ll be talking about the PS6 and the game will be day 1 on Xbox at release.

KOTOR really does need a remake everything is there for a great game to be brought into the modern era of games
It’s an absurdly hard task for any dev to take on. The original has a very specific approach to combat that would absolutely not gel with modern gamers, so they’d have to start from scratch and have to redesign a large portion of the game. The studios assigned to this just don’t strike me as having the right experience for this to ever come to fruition.
Think it’s chilling with BG&E 2.
They said it was still coming months ago.
When the new team took over development they released a statement saying there would be no delay and was progressing well.
So no surprise.
Just because it’s listed on their books doesn’t mean it’s coming along well.
@RogerRoger I was coming to make the same comment haha
Smells of Duke Nukem’ Forever.
Considering a lead writer didn’t seem like to the original very much beforehand, I’ll gladly wait liger for a proper remake.
Casey Hudson and the old Bioware team should create a new studio just to make this game. Then promote themselves to the stars and create a spiritual sucessor to Mass Effect.
Sadly I’m not holding my breath for this. As has been said above, the combat mechanics would feel incredibly dated for someone who has never played the original and would need to be completely replaced, which in turn would fundamentally alter the flow of the game.
Think I’ll stick with the Steam or Xbox versions for the foreseeable.
@Frank90 Casey Hudson did start a new studio and is working on a sci-fi game (original).
I'd love to see it if they can pull this remake off but it does sound like a tough job.
@AverageGamer That's not possible as Sony is financing it. Sony were the ones that veto'ed the first version as well. There is at least temporary exclusivity. 100% confirmed. Embracer has to bow to Sony's wishes on this. They need the money and the good business relation.
@Nem There is no such thing as “not possible”, anything possible at this point. As there is nothing stopping Sony from pulling funding if the game doesn’t release in a timely fashion or it doesn’t eventually meet their quality standards. It also heavily depends on the contract. It also already been stated that Sony is unhappy with the state of the remake.
Honestly I would rather they go quiet on this and the next time they talk about it it’s to be like hey it’s out this October or something. Just don’t be like the prince of Persia remake and seemingly have a article every week that just consistently gets worse and worse and worse. That being said I’m pretty sure this is like 2024 at the earliest and most optimistic. 2025 at the genuine earliest. Most likely 2026 in truth tho.
@AverageGamer There is. Sony can't just break contract, i'm sure. It would end in a lawsuit and bad press.
You are talking about a very unlikely "what-if" scenario.
@Nem Sony is a smart company, and I am sure they made sure to consider way to get out of this deal if it doesn't suit them. Plus any bad press isn't going to affect Sony. It going to affect Embracer Group as it is still their game, and it their decision making and studios that lead to the poor state of the game that it currently in.
But we'll see in 10 years when this finally releases.
At least I played the original
It's a hard sell. The original KotoR is IMO the best storytelling in the SW universe and blows the films stories out of the water. How do you do that justice in a remake? You certainly can't with the writer they originally picked. But IDK that any of what we know still applies to this project.
I've never played the original, here's hoping they don't scrap the remake.
@BearsEatBeets Honestly I will play any game from his team, save if the reviews are very bad.
My wife was beating the second mass effect yesterday and Jesus, what a great game; and after the end his name pop up as the first thing in the credits. In Casey I trust.
@MidnightDragonDX Kotor remake was only announced two years ago. Beyond good and evil 2 was announced many years ago. Hope both release soon as gameplay for beyond good and evil 2 looks great. Ubisoft haven’t given anymore details yet. Also hoping Kotor releases in a few years but at this point I feel as though both have been cancelled
@practicein2021 you can play Kotor 1 &2 on mobile or switch
@AverageGamer Doubt the Kotor remake will be on Xbox
