Death Stranding 2 remains a fairly unknown quantity. But, if the first game taught us anything, it's going to be super weird, a visual and stylistic tour de force, and chances are it will end up being pretty darn good, too.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz, Elle Fanning, who portrays a mysterious but clearly key character in the Death Stranding sequel, describes her experiences on the set of the game. The actress had some prior familiarity with motion capture but found performing for a video game a refreshing challenge (including when Kojima asked her to cry on cue).
Fanning freely admits she is not a gamer but is looking forward to playing the game once it's out (Kojima apparently even sent her a "PS3", but that may have been a slip of the tongue). She has also found the level of fervour and hype the game has engendered to be something new, too, with the sheer volume of comments and speculation surrounding the project surprising her.
Where are you at with Death Stranding 2? Are you excited for the sequel, or was the first not your cup of tea? Let us know in the comments section below.

I genuinely thought the first was one of the best games on PS4. Sure it’s not to everyone’s tastes, but I very much enjoyed creating a network for travelling the land and immersion myself in the amazing (and crazy) story! I can’t wait to play the sequel and I am sure that it will have some sort of showing should the rumours of an impending PlayStation showcase be true!
Was it a slip of the tongue, or does she not know the difference between a PS3 and a PS5? I’ve automatically lost respect.
@Th3solution well she did admit she wasn't a gamer so her calling it a PS3 lines up. My wife called my PS4 a PS3 for years and things got even worse when I got a Pro. Just absolutely no clue.
Looking forward to it. Death Stranding had a certain charm to it that I thoroughly enjoyed.
So here's hoping DS2 will be just a interesting.
She's a great actress who i'm sure will be great in the sequel that said i can't help but groan with Kojima's obsession with using big expensive Hollywood actors over actual voice actors who would most likely do a better job. All that said i'm very excited for the sequel as the first one was an incredible game and one of my favourites of last gen.
@Th3solution I mean my wife calls my PlayStation 5 a Nintendo…
@Bionic-Spencer I completely agree. I loved the first game. My favorite Kojima story by far, great performances, and I really connected with the design of the world and music cues. DS2 is my most anticipated game.
She’s one hell of an actress so I’m intrigued for sure to see what her role will be in this game. It’s funny to think her sister was the big star first. As many people should watch The Great as possible imo, her and Nicholas Hoult are amazing in it. He’s another child star that’s proven to have proper acting ability in later life!
Reminds me to jump back into Death Stranding. I have a long way to go.
Elle Fanning is one of the greatest actors around. Neon Demon especially is unbelievably good. So is the tv series The Great.
@Th3solution She said she's not a gamer, dude. Relax.
@Th3solution She’s an actor and obviously not a gamer. I’m sure she cares deeply about your nebulous ideas of ‘respect’, lol. 🤦♀️
She is more beautiful than her elder sister Dakota. Have been supporting her since The curious case of Benjamin Button.
@Arnna My all time favorite movie! It’s such an experience every single time.
@Darude84 It’s basically a mind-warping horror movie. Trippy as hell!
@mrbone Dakota was great in the latest Tarantino film.
@Th3solution a bit harsh on Dakota there 😉
I hated the game but I also wish it every success. Because we need Hideo Kojima. He is an artist. And in a sea of repetition, battle passes, live services and loot boxes; we need our artists now more than ever.
@nessisonett halfway through the second season now and couldn’t agree with you more. Both of them are fantastic and I don’t think a show’s made me gut-laugh so often in years 😆
OT - Absolutely cannot wait for DS2. The first was utterly unique and compelling and, as I live on my tod, probably saved my sanity during Lockdown.
Also, it being Kojima, I think I’d only be mildly surprised if it ended up being a PS3 game tbh 🙃
@WallyWest I agree that Kojima just pointlessly hires big actors constantly for his games instead of ones that aren't well known.
If it will be way better and shorter than the first one, I will be excited
@Nepp67 Don't think it's pointless. The very reason we're reading and commenting on this article is because she's a big Hollywood star. Had she been a great, though unknown voice actress, no one would care.
Kojima—please send me a PS3, mine is broken
@Arnna @Thenewguy Sorry, I was just kidding. I actually really liked her in War of the Worlds. 😉
In all seriousness, if I’m honest, I know less about movies than she probably knows about gaming. So I can’t very well lose respect for her when I really don’t even know who she is. 😅. I’m sure she’s awesome, but I just don’t know that I’ve ever seen any of her work. As long as she doesn’t say she’s excited to be in the upcoming Hishiro Kajimo game, Dead Standing 2, I’ll give her a pass on this one. 😜
Could not get into the original. Metal Gear Solid: Guns Of The Patriots was the last Hideo Kojima game that I really liked. Ground Zeroes was a overpriced demo and The Phantom Pain I lost interest as soon as V escaped from the hospital.
My wife calls my playstation an Xbox and my switch a DS. So yes, stranger things could be said. Haha, tbh it wouldn't shock me if Kojima did send her a PS3 with MGS4 pre installed. Haha
DS was my first Kojima game, and I 'got it'. Those moments when Low Roar's music (a very sad RIP) came in when you approached a new location after an arduous trek across hostile terrain are among the best in my gaming experience. And I loved tinkering with ziplines and making a very efficient network to quickly get around the map in the endgame. Very much looking forward to seeing where the series goes next.
Honestly had no clue who she was before her involvement, and still don't really.
@Th3solution My best friend also isn't a gamer no time still has my respect. Some people really don't have the time to play games there are worse things in the world.
Having Super8 and Death Stranding on a resume is pretty cool
Loved the first. #2 is Day 1 for me.
My wife calls my PS5 a Sega Genesis. SMH
