Open world epic Ghost of Tsushima sold over 1 million copies in Japan, PlayStation has confirmed. The story of surviving samurai Jin Sakai first launched on PS4 in 2020, and around a year later it was re-released on PS5 as Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut. This sales total takes both versions into account.
It's an impressive figure, because outside of juggernaut properties like Monster Hunter, PlayStation titles don't necessarily sell a whole lot of units in Japan these days. All in all, Ghost of Tsushima has sold roughly 10 million copies worldwide, making it one of Sony's most successful first-party forays of last decade or so.
Anyway, Japan's praise for Ghost of Tsushima has been well documented up until this point. The action title sold well right off the bat back in 2020, and numerous Japanese game developers spoke out about how much they enjoyed playing it. Most notably, ex-Yakuza / Like a Dragon producer Toshihiro Nagoshi and Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida both heaped praise on Sucker Punch's new property.
Naturally, it's widely believed that Sucker Punch is working on a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima — but just so you know, it apparently won't be present at the upcoming PlayStation Showcase.

1 million is actually huge. That’s like only slightly less than what a modern Final Fantasy game would sell.
It’s considerably more than things like Hogwarts legacy and Spider-man, which are big IPs in Japan.
Really great game. Curious to see what the total sales are now. Has to be past 12 million by now and whenever it comes to PC could really see it getting to 20 million.
Even Monster Hunter is on Switch now. As much as I enjoy my own, I hope the next MH is built for PS5/XSX/PC.
Well deserved. Loved this game and can't wait for the sequel
Zelda sold one million in Japan over the weekend…. I think Splatoon 3 also did similar numbers.
@rockodoodle And? This isa about PLAYSTATION not some mobile handhelds that are very popular in Japan.
Japan has great taste
HONOUUUUURRRGH!!!!!!
@rockodoodle yes. And?
I so would love and dream about part 2 having an "actual" horse that feels like a horse (and is not summonable everywhere, more like in RDR2) and you're not able to pick up stuff just with one button, even on a horse. Takes so much away from the immersion (one of the reasons Eldenring feels so empty and sterile)... Buuut, it will always be just a dream, since.. mainstream.. :/
I'm actually surprised it was this low in Japan given the reception.
Ghost of Tsushima has been out for a while now and, for all its popularity and the huge install base of the PS4 (and growing PS5), only managed 1 million sales Japan? It's also being touted as one of PlayStation's most successful releases at 10 million world-wide. It's less than 10% of PlayStation owners globally after 3 years.
Now, granted, Ghost of Tsushima is a new IP (compared to a long-running successful franchise) - but still critically acclaimed, none the less.
Basically: this seems pretty low after 3 years, DLC, and a PS5 re-release.
For me, it's just surprising - I expected sales to be higher.
Fantastic game. I didn't play it until Ps Extra came out, but that was my first download and I was not disappointed. Using wind to guide you in the right direction is brilliant
@GamingFan4Lyf
The 9.7M number is from the games 2nd anniversary, not after 3 years.
That number would put it ahead of every Zelda game ever made except 2. Ahead of every Metroid game ever made. Or in a different context it’s more units than what Elden Ring has sold on PlayStation formats.
Resident evil, which is a multi format large IP has only about 2 games that sold more than 9.7M, and none that will be over GoT final sales figures. It’s almost as many copies as the entire Silent Hill franchise has sold, 11m, across every game and format. It’s more than any Metal Gear Solid game.
On top of that it’s a completely new IP. How many new IPs that sell 10m+ have been released in the last 10 years?
You need to re-calibrate your expectations.
@ChrisDeku I think what it does show is that only a fraction of people buying PlayStations (and Xbox) actually care about more than just annual Call of Duty/annual sports title release.
I wasn't criticizing PlayStation, by the way. I just expected higher numbers given the critical reception compared to the install base of the platform.
@naruball @Tr3mm0r some friendly trolling…..I am a big fan of Sony…. I just like Nintendo more.
@GamingFan4Lyf Even on Nintendo machines where people buy sometimes only first part games the attach rates don’t get much higher, especially for new IPs.
Looking at Nintendo’s website for sales numbers, there only 6 games on the entire DS generation that had an attach rate higher than 1 in 10. 2 Pokémon Games, 1 Mario Game, 1 Mario Kart game and 2 gimmick games(Nintendogs and brain training).
There 10 Switch games that sold 15M units or more and they’re all Pokémon, Mario’s, smash brothers, animal crossings and Zelda’s again. There’s one sort of new IP, again another Gimmick game, Ring Fit Adventure at 15.38m.
The 3DS had 7 games that sold more than 10M units and none of them are new IPs. 3 Pokemon Games, 2 Mario Games, 1 Mario Kart and 1 Animal Crossing
All those games are also incredibly family friendly and light games. GoT is about brutally killing people in a pretty dark and mostly humourless world.
@GamingFan4Lyf if you looked at how badly almost all games released on ps consoles sell in Japan, perhaps you wouldn't be surprised. It's how the market works there. Even the global phenomenon Harry Potter won't end up selling even half of that.
@RonnieL I just find it weird... Like out of all the things that one could do with one's life.
This is great news for the developers. Such a fantastic game in every way. I'm glad it achieved such high levels of success.
Congrats to the team/studio on hitting 1 million sales in Japan!
Saved it and played it for the first time on PS5. Was a slow burner for me personally, at first, but I quickly got hooked. Loved the story and the ending too.
GOT is literally one of the best games I’ve ever played. The multiplayer add on is also a gem!
@rockodoodle Still it is about Sony achieves... I dont go abd comment about Switch achives on Nintendo forums...
