Ubisoft’s scant update for the perpetually delayed Skull and Bones during its livestream this week was to confirm that a new beta is on the way later this year. That test, however, will not be available on consoles like the PS5. News first emerged on Insider Gaming, who was contacted by playtesters claiming the latest beta is only available on PC. It then corroborated that information by spotting that sign-ups currently exclude consoles on the French publisher’s official website.
A developer on the game’s official Discord has since clarified that the beta was “never intended to be for console”, despite registrations previously including PS5 as an option. It’s just another sign that this project may not be progressing as planned, with its previously planned November 2022 release date pushed back indefinitely late last year.

Man this game has to have been just a nightmare to develop. Ubisoft has some legitimately exciting titles on the way but Skull & Bones just feels so...hopeless.
I hope it gets out soon so the teams working this can wash their hands of it. Just the definition of development hell.
I preordered this a while back, but with the lack of favour towards the game now, with the crazy delays and reboots, I think it best to pass on this game at launch and wait and see what the critics and reviewers think instead.
Am I the only one who doesn’t think this bodes well for the console versions?
Just release it, let it bomb and move on.
And to think, they could have avoided all this headache - and probably made a lot more money - by simply doing a ground-up remake of Black Flag for modern hardware.
Bit of a dumb moves for a game that really needs to sell at this point. PC and xbox already have sea of thieves if they want an online pirate game
My only question is why this game is not F2P. Can hardly justify buying it for the fill price, but might try it if Ubisoft adds it to PS Plus or Game Pass.
@Tay2k2 or even just done a new pirate based rpg without the animus, calling upon hundreds of examples of pirate history, folklore, mythology and everything in between. Rather than, you know, just boats blowing up boats online for digital resources 😫😫😫
I believe I said quite a while ago, just make a game about Blackbeard and build it around the mythology of Blackbeard, and it'd instantly be better than this. Or any pirate. Or just have famous pirates as characters in the story. Black Flag did that very well, and a new IP could just as easily do that, without also making you go off to look for apples as well lol.
It's painful, because Ubisoft has such a great team of historians and experts that they always call upon for their historical fiction. And the mechanics were clearly already developed for the naval combat side of things which could feature in parts of the game, alongside exploration and combat on land, which again Ubisoft specialise in. All they needed was a few spare writers and not to back everything on it being a GaaS 😫 I've never been able to see the draw for this game as it is. It screamed very low player count from first announcement
I played it during the last beta. It’s terrible. You’re not missing much.
This has 'day one on gamepass' written all over it.
Spare a commiseratory thought for the PC crowd I guess? 😅
How many betas for this ?? I've personally been part of 3 betas....all this time and money plus effort,.98% chance its a flop, from.what I've personally played at least, it's a bad game,
It must be really bad to work on a game for years while you also know it will be forgotten in a week.
@MidnightDragonDX Giving Cyberpunk vibes
@Scottyy Take it from the other side... Be payed for years even if no one cares if you have progress or not, that is the dream job for someone...
Yes, this game is forgotten long before.
Still have it installed on my ps5.
@djlard
I believe game devs are passionate people and want to see their work praised. Not the upper managements though.
Yarrrh, this 'ere be bad tidings
Didn't Yves once say that most PC gamers are pirates? This checks out.
I loved the slide for this in the Ubisoft Forward presentation with the caption "Long Live Piracy" lol
@Enuo Not even Microsoft would spend money on this. At least it will be day one on Uplay +
Remember what I'm saying, this game will be released broken, buggy and a mess on consoles, because they are focused on PC.
This is from CDprojektRed and other devs are going to make the same damn mistake "We made it even more difficult for ourselves by first wanting to make the game look epic on PCs and then adjusting it to consoles — especially old-gens. That was our core assumption. And things did not look super difficult at first, while we knew the hardware gap, ultimately, time has proven that we've underestimated the task."
This game is going to flop and it's going to flop hard. Ubisoft knows it as well as anyone. They should just release it already, rip that band aid right off and take the loss. Then at least they'd be allowed to move on to something else.
Ah, typical Ubisoft. Synonymous with tone-deaf themes and mediocrity.
@Bionic-Spencer I think taking the approach of never preordering a game and waiting to see how a game is on release is always the best way to go.
@Scottyy ...but well paid job is well paid job...
@LazyLombax Nope. You're better off just playing Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag if you want a real pirate game.
@LazyLombax They're delaying it because the game was a buggy mess, not because of the complaints over how the game plays.
