Mortal Kombat 1’s new Kameos system looks like it’s going to add a lot of variety to the upcoming fighter’s gameplay. For those who haven’t been keeping track of the title, these side-kicks are selected separately from the main roster, and can be called into battle using the R1 button and a direction. They can do various things in combat: extend combos, start juggles, and interfere with the flow of opponents.
The other really neat thing is that they have their own Fatalities, as we see glimpsed in this GameSpot gameplay video, as classic Jax Briggs grows in size and stomps on his opponent. This means there’s going to be a lot to explore in the final game, because you’ll be able to choose whether you want your main character to Finish Him/Her – or your accomplice.

Kameos are also involved in Fatal Blows, and it’s really clever the way this works. Judging by the gameplay footage above, your side-kick will setup the attack, which then segues into your main character’s animation. It’s really seamless the way NetherRealm’s assembled these, because even though the setup remains the same, it all flows naturally regardless of the main character.
We’re seriously impressed by what we’ve seen of the Kameo system so far, and we’ve barely even scratched the surface of what’s possible from a pure combat perspective. It’s going to add so much gameplay variety to each character, as you’ll have dozens of different accomplices you can pair with your main. The fact that they even have their own Fatalities is the icing on the cake!

I'm not really digging the Kameo thing and I really feel like they're gonna use it to exclude fan favourites from the roster. On the upside Kitana looks better than ever ^__^❤️❤️❤️ and I really like that the Fatalities aren't as overly long and ridiculous as MK 11's were
Some cheesy looking fatalities, I will purchase but Mortal Kombat 9 will always be top dog. Mhhhhhmm check please!
@Keyblade-Dan May I ask what exactly you find good in Kitana's new look/model?
@Olmaz I love her new outfit I think the design is great and I really like that it looks royal and the silver accents on it really pop. That and I like her face it looks good and her new hairstyle really suits her
I kinda get now why there were devs suffering from PTSD and stuff from modelling these fatalities. When it was cartoony and stuff it was easier to laugh at the over the top violence but idk I get bad vibes watching that linked video with how hyper realistic it is now. Could be partly growing up and also the fact that Twitter’s awful new algorithm boosted graphic videos of child shootings and I’ve seen enough gore of that type to last a lifetime.
@nessisonett Agreed, it's basically a snuff movie now. Really unpleasant.
Oh so it isn't tag teams like MK9? That's kinda lame :/

I really hoped it was going to be the actual mortal Kombat 1 remade, especially seeing how good the kameo characters look, but regardless the game is going to be amazing
Well... i'm gonna come out and say it.
Kameo's are awful. Literally the reason why i won't buy the game.
I really love the Asian and martial arts aesthetic, the backgrounds, the way the characters look. I think it would've been a beautiful looking game. But, Kameo's ruin it. They look goofy and out of place and completely break immersion.
Such a shame. But,i'm sure the game will still sell like crazy. But, for me, it's a deal breaker.
@get2sammyb Really PushSquare, so now a non vulgar slight criticism of a in-game character model of a fictional character is getting removed as "inappropriate"?
Please don't become this, you are one of the very few sites where, seemingly, respectful open discussions about video games and adjacent topics can still happen, I'd hate for it to change...
@Olmaz I'm really konfused there was nothing vulger about your comment you simply had a different point of view from me not really sure what was so inappropriate?
@Nem Can't say I blame you I don't care for the system and it's really annoying you can't turn it off
@Keyblade-Dan Maybe a simple algorithm search that didn't like the word "buttocks"? That would be funny as I went out of my way to not use a vulgar word! : )
@Nem Yep, I'm not convinced by the kameo feature. Let's see how it ends up being but for sure I'd like the option to turn it off.
Kameo really sounds like the 2v2 mode from MK9 where you press a single button to tag in your teammate but in single player mode.
Nice to know about the Kameos, thanks for sharing!
