In recent history, Mortal Kombat has been fantastic at elongating the traditional fighting game experience. A core component of that in the last several releases has been the Krypt, an area where you’re able to spend in-game currency on alternative outfits, costume colours, artwork, and more. But despite being very popular with fans, series bigwig Ed Boon has teased that his team is cooking something different for Mortal Kombat 1.
“We have a whole new system [for unlocks],” he told the PS Blog. “I can tell you it’s not the Krypt. But we’re gonna have a whole new system for unlocks.”
It’ll be interesting to see what it’s cooked up. In the most recent Mortal Kombat 11, the Krypt was a fully explorable 3D space with a map that you were able to navigate in order to open chests. But, while slightly different in concept, the recently released Street Fighter 6’s RPG-style World Tour mode has really expanded our horizon of what’s possible here. It’d be cool to see something even more in-depth like that.
We’re also secretly hoping some of the minigames from past titles have made a comeback. While we’d expect the thrust of NetherRealm’s focus to be on the core fighting, we wouldn’t say no to a spot of Motor Kombat or Puzzle Kombat, would you?

Our new system is called Kommerce, where you buy Kurrency in order to spend it on overpriced Kontent.
Thrilled for a new unlock system! While I didn't dislike the crypt, it's nice to see them freshening things up for this title!
Bring back Test Your Might! ❤️
No krypt makes me think even more that this game was supposed to be Injustice 3 and they changed it to Mortal Kombat a couple years ago and the Krypt was just something else that could be cut.
Honestly, they’ll likely have a battlepass.
Hope its good as i loved the Krypt in MK11.
I hope and pray it's not another battle pass game.
If it is, I genuinely might not get it.
I'd love to see the return of Konquest mode. Add a character creator for it. Then I'd enjoy the return of MK Chess.
@Uncharted2007 I was thinking the same thing
As long as there are unlocks for just playing the game, I'll have no problem with that. I'll actually enjoy it.
While I am enjoying SF6 a lot, the World Tour mode is getting a bit tedious.
As long as the unlocks don't require actual money. The new system should be get good get goodies. Just like the good old days. Kick ass at game and you get cool stuff. It's how we did it before all this DLC crap and it worked fine then.
@Truegamer79 I agree, that’s how it should be. But, I doubt that it completely will be. They’ll find a way, like 97% of devs, to incorporate DLC stuff. It’s just the norm now. THOUGH, I do think there will be plenty of fun in-game unlocks for free. 😎😎😎
What I hope they bring back is fighting against characters hidden in the world by unlocking said fights via in-game actions, like they did in the original MK1 and 2.
Also at least 2 playable characters hidden in the roster, unlockable via puzzles that have hints hidden around the game arenas.
For the rest of them they can make DLC's or whatever but give us at least 2 that can bring back that sense of mistery and the joy of discovering them...
It's called the the shop with £30 skins.
@Shinnok789 Unfortunately I don't think unlockable fighters will ever be a thing in fighting games anymore due to the shift in focus to online multiplayer, where every in-game character needs to be immediately accessible for matchups.
@nessisonett honestly though, the expensive ***** is cosmetics. Every new character that comes out is definitely worth the price, you can tell the live and care that went into them. The other stuff.. pretty obvious it's the parent company overlords
I'm thinking they're going to do away with the Krypt and bring in a Konquest mode. Ed Boon teases a lot and doesn't deliver which is kind of nice, keeps the mystique etc, but between MK9 and MK11 you can tell they basically are building significantly each time.
@truerbluer They can work out a solution if they want to, that can work in online too, that's not much of a hindrance.
The only obstacle I fear is the obsessive monetization, every new character has to have a price tag attached nowadays... money above all, improving the gameplay experience be damned...
This is dumb the Krypt was perfectly simple and streamline during the 3D Era because of course the NRS Era screwed it up and broke what didn't need fixing 🙄
Why over complicate it? Unlock content by playing the game. I’m happy for that to be expanded and monetised by having a battle pass. But the krypt was a mess within what was otherwise a great game.
Koquest mode would solify my decision to buy this game.
It's amazing how fighting games went from the top of the hill, to the bottom and now are among the very best again.
Can't wait for the new 'Kredit Kard' unlock system. It's gonna be big.
