The gruesome first PS5 gameplay footage of Mortal Kombat 1 has debuted as part of Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest livestream, and it’s not for the faint of heart. In the glimpse, we see a few story mode cinematics, a bunch of gameplay, and, of course, some Fatalities.
The grisly gameplay footage also gives us our first taste of the previously announced Kameos system, which work as summons you can call in during combat. And it confirms a couple of Kameo characters, including Sonya Blade and Jax. You can find a full list of All Confirmed Characters through the link, which we'll update later today.

Looked pretty awesome, don't know if I'll get it day one but definitely one on my list.
Looks pretty good, not the biggest fan of MK as I prefer any other fighting game over it but I can get into this.
Looked amazing, not sure about the kameo fighters personally but I'm excited to get my hands on it
Looks so good! I absolutely love the stages!
So are the kameo fighters like assist characters in Marvel vs Capcom?
That’s not very realistic is it.
@Greger22 Yes from the looks and description of it. Very similar. There will be some overlap between playable characters and kameo characters, but from the sound of it most of the kameo characters will not be playable.
@shonenjump86 Same here. It always felt like the fighting game equivalent of a straight to DVD movie to me. But this looks like it'll be a nice, different kind of exp from SF6 and Tekken 8. A bit of a palate cleanser. They tend to have really good tutorials too, so it's just fun to learn.
Looks very very good, and a good evolution from the MK11.
No sold on the Kitana/Mileena design though...
Looks great. Really interested in what the story is going to be.
@Matroska that’s what makes MK so popular because their story modes blow other fighters out of the water so it brings in the casuals
@Olmaz Really? I think she's hot and, in a dumb way, it draws me to the game.
@dark_knightmare2 Very true. Every fighting game that's a big hit has great, extensive single player modes. Well, at least as of roughly the PS1 or PS2 gen. With SF2 it was a different time so that wasn't expected.
Personally I wasn't that big on what we were shown and it looks like my worst fears about the Kameo Fighters system has been konfirmed. Also HOW COULD YOU REPLACE RICHARD MOTHERFING EPCAR!!!!!! On the upside my favourite Kharacter Kitana has never looked better her design is fantastic (no pun intended)
Looks fantastic and easily a day 1 buy. Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8 and MK1 damn us fighting fans are eating well this year.
Looks ok. I'm sure they'll get it polished by release though.
@Matroska I don't know, their model seemed to have weird proportions (long torso and short legs), their clothes are from the MK11 kind instead of the more cheesy/sexy vibes of MK9 which I prefer.
But to each his own on that count, I'm glad some prefer it that way! : )
Looks as good as I expected.
Now this looks STUNNING!! the backdrops, tight controls, detail on the characters. Definitely one for the purchase list.
Am I the only one who thought this doesn't look that good? I honestly think MK 11 looks better.
Maybe it's the character design? It looks quite bland.
@Pat_trick MK 11 looks great but go back and play it my guy this looks way better
Looks identical to MK11. This one will be a pass for me…
Looks the same as any of the other recent MK games.
@Pat_trick To be fair, the game actually look stunning when you look at the backgrounds, the physics of the fights, the faces, the character models' details and so on.
But I agree with you with the bland design. This is really bare bone MK style... I was hoping to a return to the more fantastical/cheesy style of MK9. Maybe some alternate outfits (I mean, the kameo character's outfits were from the old games, so one can hope)?
I watched it a higher quality version over on youtube and I say it looks a least on par with MK11. I do think this looks a bit more cartoon-y though. Not saying it's good or bad at this stage but we'll see.
What I'm not a fan of so far is the kameo's. Seems kind of silly to me. I'm not good against other people so I only fight the CPU so I hope there's an option to turn that feature off. Maybe it will grow on me though. It's really the only thing keeping this from being a day one purchase right now.
@dark_knightmare2 I’ve played MK 11 recently, this looks worse.
Though, some may prefer it looking like a high end mobile game with a dash of Fortnite.
Not too keen on fighting games but definetely looks more fun than Tekken&SF.
The kameo's kind of ruin the presentation of the game. Though i'm sure they are fun from a gameplay pov.
@OmegaStriver I wasn't gonna say, but i agree. I was not impressed. MK11 looks better on the character models, but i expect it will get better before release.
I do like the focus on asian aestectics and martial arts. Don't like the kameo's though. They will be a nightmare to balance.
@Matroska yeah, I wouldn’t mind getting into this game. Some MK games I like, a lot of them I don’t. This one definitely looks promising.
@Olmaz By watching it again, I have to agree with you. The environments look amazing, but the characters themselves look like normal everyday people.
@Pat_trick graphics wise agree with you 11 did look better as I can tell Kittana and meleene look better then 11. But when it comes to graphics and graphics only it looks like a step backwards to rush in on the hype train for the 2nd movie and also because they feel the pressure of getting their fighter out their before sf6 and tekken takes some of their user base.
@OmegaStriver ok you’re trolling now got it
The visual flow of those Kameos is weird. I hope at least they're pretty rare
Am I the only one who thinks it looks same as MK11? Maybe it was the 1080p Youtube live stream on my big Tv but I wasnt really impressed by anything.
@dark_knightmare2 Nope, not trolling, the characters faces and bodies look uncanny and somewhat plastic.
I'm not at all impressed by MK1.
The biggest turn-off is this cameo system.
It'll be a good side/alternative game mode, but as a main new mechanic it feels stupid.
Kameo is defo MvC2's mechanic, dunno why Mr Boon tried to make it sound like an original idea. Good to finally see a non desolate or dreary map in Mk. I fully expect them to micro transaction the s**t out of the kameos.
@Pat_trick Nah man, I'm with you. I played a lot of MK11 and enjoyed it, but this seems like more of the same with nicer backgrounds. Not hyped.
@Pat_trick I thought the same way. Looks good, for sure, but "breathtaking"? Really?
Looks like the gameplay will be really fluid. It seems like an absolute evolution of the series and I’m really looking forward to it. You could tell Geoff was excited announcing it too.
I hated the character assists in MK11 Towers, this looks very similar. Start a combo get it interrupted by the kameo fighter.
They are latching into this kameo system for MK11 and it seems like the wrong thing.
Gameplay was amazing! I still don't see myself paying full price though, will wait a few years until it's dirt cheap or free with PS+.
