Tired of the Madden NFL franchise and yearning for the glory years of NFL Blitz and its ilk? Saber Interactive has announced Wild Card Football, a totally new officially licensed arcade American football game, with a roster of “hundreds” of pros – including former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who’ll feature on the cover.
The game’s a seven-on-seven adaptation of the classic pigskin slingin’ pastime, except you can expect some pretty wacky deviations from the real-life rules. The trailer shows all kinds of zaniness, such as an alien invasion, pinball buffers, and even players who are able to grow ten-times their normal size, like they’ve just eaten a mushroom out of the Super Mario series.
“We set out to create a fast and fun experience that's pure adrenaline,” creative chief Tim Willits said. “Wild Card Football does just that by putting you in the cleats of your favourite pro players and ratcheting up the intensity with awesome new gameplay elements.”
You’ll be able to build your own unique dream team from the hundreds of pro players included, and will have full control over logos, uniforms, playbooks, and more. The full release will have over 150 gameplay Wild Cards to keep the on-field gameplay fresh, and there’ll be competitive multiplayer with crossplay if you want to take the craziness online.
The title’s due out on 10th October, 2023 for PS5 and PS4, and cover star Colin Kaepernick promises it’ll stoke your nostalgia for the glory years of the arcade football games of yore. “This is such a nostalgic throwback to the classic arcade-style football games so many of us grew up with and loved. It's been a blast to be involved with the Saber team as they’ve put the game together,” he said.

sees Colin Kaepernick featured
gets popcorn because this comment section is going to be amusing
Colin Kaepernick? LOL they are really really going for all the money possible. I wonder if the people obsessed with calling things "woke" are going to take this as a woke movement.
Looks great, can't wait.
I love a good sports game that doesn't take itself seriously.
"football" - quotes needed in the title
Cool to see Kaepernick. I miss these sorts of games, the EA Street series were great and Midway came out with good arcadey sports games too.
Got excited when i saw "football" in the title then realised that this is now an american website and the game is about american "handball"
I can hear the people on Twitter now who wear sunglasses in doors calling this game woke Just off Colin Kaepernick being in the game.
Looks a bit janky but I'm willing to give it a shot. Wish we could get a modern release of Blitz 2000 but that's seemingly impossible at this point, hopefully this can scratch that itch a little
Yup, interested.
Like @nessisonett, was also partial to games like FIFA Street and more arcadey takes on sports, fingers cross this is decent.
Little or no actual gameplay footage, so it's hard to tell if this will be worth picking up or not.
A year after release it will be $5, I'll give it a shot then.
Looks like a goofy fun time. Been a while since we've had an arcade-y football game like this.
@Olmaz why? Surely you didn't think was a lot soccer?
Shots fired
Hmmmm. Interesting. Priced right and fun.... could be day 1 for me
@Cutmastavictory What's that "sockeur" thingy you're talking about? Is it French?
Looks good to me, if the price is right. For $29.99 or less, I’m totally in. If it costs more than that, we’ll see. I kinda wish a football game would take a different view than Madden’s. How ‘bout a left to right perspective for a change?
*transforms into the IGN message boards.
That place is an alt right cesspool.
Like everyone else I got excited when I saw arcade football only to realise it isn't football. PushSquare, can you amend the title to gridiron or something please?
Colin Kaepernick is my favourite football squadron.
