Uncharted 2: Among Thieves director Bruce Straley, ever the firebrand, sees some striking similarities between a train sequence in Tom Cruise's latest attempt to go out in a blaze of cinematic glory (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning) and that iconic scene from Nathan Drake's ill-advised Himalayan holiday.
To be fair to Straley, we immediately thought the same thing upon seeing the scene. But then again, it's not like Uncharted 2 has a monopoly on heroic, unforgettable action scenes on trains, either. It's equally possible there are some Uncharted fans over in the Mission: Impossible camp, and perhaps this is just a cinematic tip of the cap. As the old saying goes, imitation is:
What do you think, is Straley right on the money here, or is the concept of an explosive train derailment a universally-feared and shared human experience? Try not to get off-track entirely in the comments section below.

Yeah it's very familiar and it was a great moment. If only that could be said for the rest of the movie...
A very wise school teacher once told me, “There is no such thing as original thought, only original perspective.” The most liberating words for any creative mind out there. Also the most humbling, Mr. Straley, as if Uncharted completely originated this concept…
Uncharted wasn't particularly original in taking inspiration from films either, including that scene. Saying that, the luggage rack shot is very similar!
It was the director, Christopher McQuarrie who wanted to do a train crash. Just guessing from his age, I don't think he played Uncharted.
Yes. I saw the movie on Friday, and that was the first I thought of, when I saw that sequence. The order of the scene in movie is almost exactly as it was in Uncharted 2.
As the saying goes “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”.
Probably wants to be in the credits
I found the original Uncharted flick hilariously bad. Lame, shallow and predictable. I'm european though so i may have higher standards.
It was definetely lifted whole cloth from Uncharted. The chase in Rome bears a striking resemblance to the chase in Uncharted 4, the train sequence obviously imitates Uncharted 2, and the train going off the bridge at the end is not dissimilar to the ending of Lost Legacy. Those are too many coincidences to disregard claims that Uncharted was the template for those scenes.
But since the actual Uncharted film was cack, I don't really mind.
Saw the movie last night and that's exactly what I was thinking to myself, 'brings back memories of Uncharted 2.'
It's got Hayley Atwell in it - who cares about a plot?
Italian Job and more recently Lost world Jurassic Park all feature very similar sequences and shots as well.
Would be disingenuous in the extreme to suggest this came from Uncharted 2. If anything the directors and team have made it clear that Buster Keaton's The General and that film's excellent train work and stunts is the inspiration for said scenes.
@Nepp67 The movie is one of the best action--adventure films nowadays.
This is a non-article. Christopher McQuarrie, the MI director, publicly admitted that Uncharted was a huge influence on the series and whole scenes were lifted from the games.
@puddinggirl Eh, the story being about an AI becoming sentient was just boring to me, it just didn't feel as intense or high stakes compared to Fallout.
Back when MI Fallout released (pre Tom Holland Uncharted) I was thinking that the shear spectacle and double crosses fallout had to offer would translate well into an uncharted movie and was hoping that the same team would take over.
The Uncharted movie we got was fun but forgettable.
