A secret war has been fought in the shadows for years now by combatants who work tirelessly to achieve their ultimate goal: getting FromSoftware's excellent PS4-exclusive Bloodborne running at a locked 60fps (1080p) on PS5, at all costs. The tenacity and perseverance demanded by the Soulslike player (or some say Soulsborne), when combined with serious technical skills, is a frightening one to behold.
Lance McDonald, along with Illusion, two names of note among this elusive community, have managed it. Through means of dark sorcery and complicated, impressive-sounding jargon, the patch first forged by McDonald has successfully been inserted into a retail PS5 by Illusion. The result is a beautiful one:
This should go without saying, but modding your PS5 is a serious risk and not something we'd advise, even if we understood how it all worked. Still, you have to imagine this kind of thing puts pressure on someone, anyone in a position to give fans the official thing (or just throw cash at the modders that did it in their spare time).
What about Bloodborne drives this dedication, this single-minded obsession, this all-consuming need for knowledge and to push the boundaries of the cosmic and unknown? Let us know in the comments section below.

I read Bloodborne and PS5 when my eyes skimmed the article and my heart skipped a beat.
Why can't Sony just allow 60fps on PS5? Its so simple.
Fun fact: Bloodborne was one of the most played games on playstation in July.

@zhoont, its a gift, can't be taught
One of the best games of the last generation and yet the only FromSoftware game NOT running 60fps (officially) on PS5. It's one of life's great mysteries..
All this tells me is that there are some serious coders out there that have a much better understanding of how the ps5 works and are able to work this kind of magic. Makes you wonder why sony or the game devs dont track these guys down and give them a job as its obvious they make a mockery out of the coders that say things like this are not possible or not cost effective blah,blah,blah..
Delayed โ Bungie told Jim Ryan they need to add microtransactions and a season pass to make Bloodborne PS5 commercially viable
@VaultGuy415 what are you yabbering on about?
There's no reason for there not to be a 60fps PS5 patch at this point, which leads me to believe that there's a licensing or rights issue. Perhaps From Software owns the assets, with Japan Studio only helping with the PS4 side of the development and giving cursory, technological experience. And we all know Japan Studio no longer exists, so...
Your. Not โYouโreโ. Youโre welcome.
@DennisReynolds There's speculation that, while Sony owns the IP, that there's some contractual obligation that only From Software is allowed to work on patches, sequels, remakes, whatever it is. It would make sense. Sony definitely knows what they have here and I guess they would have acted much faster if they could. There has to be something. They can't be that ignorant.
Oh Sony, just pay these guys and get it out there, please!
@Northern_munkey I mean, this is very clearly not a technical challenge, it's not that From (or anyone) is incapable of doing this. My guess is either politics/rights getting in the way, or getting in the way of future roadmaps (i.e. planning to do a full price remake or remaster later and don't want to patch it).
I very much doubt it's a case of they can't figure out how to unlock the framerate.
U will be ok playing 30 fps bloodborn just like u did in PS4 I see no reason to push a old game up to 60fps all we know they remaking it like they did to demon souls
@Powerplay94 I agree, BB is a fun game but if PlayStation/From are done with it and don't plan on ever updating it, then that's fine by me.
Modders do a better job than Sony and FromSoftware
@DrClayman seeing as pretty much all of from softwares games suffer the awful frame pacing issue i would argue they can't be bothered or dont know how. This has been a staple feature of their games for as long as i can remember.
@Northern_munkey Eh, no, not really. The frame pacing issue their games suffer from are precisely because of the 30 frame rate cap, any game they've ran unlocked has not had that issue.
DS3 had frame rate issues, yes, but that was the PS4 Pro hardware not being powerful enough to run it at a solid 60. On PS5 which has tons of headroom, the game runs fine, and so does DS2 and Sekiro. So uncapping Bloodborne would most likely be a similar case.
Only issue in their older games in that the physics was tied to their frame rate, but they also figure that out long ago as it's not been an issue recently.
Wait for Bluepoint.
When whatever licensing issues are resolved I'm sure they'll have the source code and assets. They made Demon's Souls run beautifully, so perhaps when they're done with Bloodborne it'll be pulling 1440p60 upscaled to 4K similar to how Returnal does it, plus all the frame pacing jank common to From engine games will be gone.
It looks majestic. What really happened when Japan Studio become defunct and From decided to get in bed with ActiBlizz for Sekiro and then Bamco. What an absolute corpo disaster.
@DrClayman ok squire..
I've said it sooo many times, BAFFLING the PS5 Remake has not been announced. SIE are great at remaining in the Cultural Zeigeist, outplaying Xbox in this regard, this would be another sucker punch if announced.
What is it about Bloodborne? That's easy. It's the second hardest Soulsborne game (next to Sekiro). It's terrifying. It's beautifully conceived. It has crazy replay value. It has by far the best DLC of ANY Soulsborne game. It's exclusive to Sony's console. End of story. We need, want and deserve a meticulous remaster for PS5.
@DennisReynolds probably want to sell a 60fps version that's why, like rockstar will surely do with RDR2
Sony, for the love of the Great Ones, throw these guys some change, give them credits, give it an official once over internally, and roll it out. Great PR and fans are happy, win win.
Game's amazing the way it is. Quit whinging and go play it.
Every now and then I imagine a Bluepoint remake of this on the level of their Demon Souls port. Sigh.
@SegaBlueSky playing Demons Souls remake now. What a job by Bluepoint on that game. Bloodbourne would be incredible if they did a remake.
@cburg Still the best looking game on PS5 in my books, nothing has impressed me so much since.
