The Marvel's Spider-Man 2 limited edition PS5 console is starting to be shipped out to content creators and those who secured a pre-order, and some wording on the packaging suggests the game will be taking up a big portion of your SSD. The retail box says a minimum of 98GB of free space is required to download and play Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Once the install has completed, it's possible the PS5 exclusive won't actually take up that much space, but it's still set to be a big download come 20th October 2023.
The titbit was picked up by @SpiderManCD on Twitter, who uploaded a picture of the PS5 console and its packaging, viewable below. The potential download size is notably larger than Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered (53.84GB) and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (39.21GB).
The limited edition PS5 system releases this Friday on 1st September 2023, and you can still secure your own on Sony's own PlayStation Direct shop for £569.99 / $599.99. The custom DualSense controller and Console Covers, however, are sold out. Will you need to make some room for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on your PS5? Seems reasonable, sort of expected really. On our two consoles, we only tend to have 2-3 games on there at any one point, usually a single player and a multiplayer. So it should be just fine. I’m not one to hop onto loads of different games, if it doesn’t grab me enough to stay on the hard drive it goes.
I play the same way I played with the older consoles such as N64, PS1 etc, one game, at a time.
Did question getting more storage, but for the cost it seems pointless in my user case.
I understand that’s not how many others play or have too many in the household to juggle that though. So yeah, I guess each to their own.
But for me 100GB for one game is fine.

@KundaliniRising333 For the Trophies!
@KundaliniRising333 lol. That is the best description I’ve ever seen of the Spider Man games.

i would hope it has better side quests that the first one. tombstone was the only good one everything else was a collectathon
@themightyant I mean, with all the talk of vastly superior decompression, ultra-fast SSD throughput, and no requirement for asset duplication, I think one could reasonably suspect that the overall file size would be smaller.
But the reality is, that just means there's now room to make the asset quality significantly higher. Plus, I am sure to keep things "instant" they probably had to keep the compression to a minimum so that there is more that is "ready" to be loaded (rather than having to be decompressed first).
There is always a trade-off:
Make it more compressed and therefore introduce slight load times, or make things "pure" so that it's ready to be loaded in an "instant" at the cost of file size.
Just got a 4tb from Amazon. Perfect timing I guess!
Regardless of the download size, no special steelbook edition, no day 1 purchase. Will wait for second hand standard edition copies to appear for a decent price.
Sounds good! Can not wait.
@Loamy 😂 I used to take the approach of installing all I can, but then I had the same problem I had when I had GamePass, I didn’t end up playing anything. It must be the opposite of ADHD, but when I have too much choice I do nothing. Same with Netflix, I’ve had it for years and maybe watched 5-10 things on it.
Wish I could install and play more, but I’d just look at the tiles and sigh. 😂
@GamingFan4Lyf You hit the nail on the head with this. People talked a lot during the pre release of PS5 about the compression technology.
However, they sort of forgot that it’s also the case consumers desire for “more” is directly competing with it. Textures, audio, longer gameplay etc. It’s all desired to be more than, not equal to last generation.
So whilst people may not realise, this may have been 150 or more GB if released without compression, potentially a lot more.
All people need to do is take a look at a crappy compression, but very common one, JPEG. When first released it seemed an amazing trade off, tiny files and still a wonderful image.
Yet now, we have much more megapixel cameras, and thus even a JPEG can reach 10 times or more the size of what the average one used to be.
It’s just nice to see someone acknowledge that for better or worse, the fact remains despite compression, we all desire more, so compressed or not … eventually it’ll increase.
@GamingFan4Lyf The first game was around 70GB after patches. With higher quality assets, a much larger map, etc. 100GB always seemed likely. But they deemed my original comment unconstructive, so who cares.
@Loamy What can I say, it’s one of my many talents, talking about storage and people just drop clothes to the floor. It’s a rather niche talent, like how The Flash can travel at the speed of light without his flesh ripping off and I’m supposed to just sit there and ignore it.
Anyway, I digress, oh my gosh I just realised my mind went from storage to Flash, as in flash storage!
I should not think out loud.

This feels like 1 of the first big PS5 exclusives to me so it wouldn't surprise me that it would be larger than PS4 games for all of that native 4k goodness. 100GB just seems like the norm to me for a big game like this and I would have been surprised if it was any less.
Don’t really think that’s a big deal. It’s the type of game that, once finished, one would just likely delete it and not come back to for a very long time, if ever. That’s why I’d only ever get the physical version so I can sell on.

@Loamy I’m just really glad we’ve all had such a great mass debate on the subject of storage. It’s about time the subject was really given the solid seriousness it needed to be pumped with online.
It’s just usually all these conversations just usually turn to childish moments or insults, so it’s nice to see we’ve raised a firm bar against that. It’s good to know people who visit the site will have a firm impression of how adult we can all be.
I’ll see myself out

Triple digit memory requirements is pretty much the norm now for these big releases. I was just contemplating getting a PlayStation Portal but now I wonder if I need to funnel my extra gaming budget into SSD expansion instead.

I really hope this means they've put more meaningful side quest in the game. I couldn't stand the ones from the first. Worst part of the platinum.
@KundaliniRising333 😆🤣☠️☠️
Bring on all those collectables, base camps, enemies on top of buildings, underground sewer missions and all the other side content and side missions, I can wait to tackle them all. If many Ubisoft games were as fun and high quality as Insomniacs Spidey games theres no way Ubisoft would have most of the bad rep it currently has. Its like you can't make a good open world game anymore these days without being compared to some of Ubisofts boring offerings. Ubi didnt create open worlds and they're cerfainly not the pinnacle just because they do a lot of it. For many its more about the Spiderman main story missions which put many Ubisoft main story missions to shame. If you want a Spiderman game to be tight linear non open world, that's like wanting a Gran Turismo game with no cars. Spiderman needs to be open world swinging from building to building, you simply can't swing from building to building in a tight linear Spidey game, makes no sense whatsoever
@Loamy they are indeed 😂. However, would love to see 0 Screwball challenges as her screaming PHOTOBOMB has given me PTSD.
I could go on for a while but I've already written too many comments with @NEStalgia on what I love and hated about the Insomniac SP games.
I really need an additional SSD
@KundaliniRising333 icon chasing, I don't think Insomniac will remove all the icons on the map just to please one or a dozen gamers complaining. I like to know where to go when slowly revealing parts of any open world map over time, instead of endlessly looking for things that simply ain't there, which would irritate waste of time and just end up using a youtube location guide vid anyway, which then would make removing icons a useless idea to begin with unless you are willing to put 200+ hours into waisting time in a Spidey game but it looks like you've only put barely couple hours into it (assuming) from the looks of it. I'd be surprised if Spidey 2 has backpacks to collect as they were just an optional very light back story to Peters life which brings a little personality to the character we're playing as. Follow up Spidey game Miles Morales didn't have any backpacks and I highly doubt Spidey2 will. Fair enough its not your cup of tea but I am very curious though what the alternative to a non open world Spidey game is which also has no icons on its map either, right now I simply I don't see any other alternative at all tbh. Maybe an Elden Ring world where there's hardly any super tall buildings sort of like a Lord of The Rings type world (far less dense than a Spiderman game) could be perfect for no icons but it would have to be built from the start with the intention in mind of exploration for the no icons to work in any open world map but many games that have huge open world maps simply need quite a lot of icons for it to be properly playable?. Spidey is all about (mostly) fast flowing gameplay, simply adding huge exploration to reveal every icon yourself sort of defeats the purpose of Spiderman?
@Loamy annnnnd just like that, they're gone 🤣

@KaijuKaiser I’m truth you’re right. My SSD is about 80% full but I mainly just play two or three of the 12 games on there. The problem is that the larger the game’s file size, the more reluctant I am to delete it until I am certain that I’ll not be going back to it since these big games take a fair bit of time to download. But still, so far I’ve been okay with shuffling games off when I need space. It’s just a hassle.
But I hear you — I tried to play FF16 alongside Jedi Survivor and I just had to stop until I could finish off Jedi. It’s easy to get lost or mix up the controls.
Call of spider-man or spider-man of duty?
But seriously, my ps5 ssd can't take it anymore, its already full lol.
Guess still nothing compared to 160GB NBA 2K23 (which is particularly ridiculous for a sports game - that sucks IMO, no less).
@wiiware Somebody needs to read a joke book or something to get better at telling jokes. Even if this is roughly 100 GB, that's nothing compared to Call of Duty and it's 150-200 GB size nowadays.
Just messing with you, so don't get mad. I am serious about the file sizes though.
Damn! I have the space, but better be prompt about clearing stuff out until I can get a larger hard drive.
I'm ok with bigger game installs if that means that the the ps5 is going to see the quality thats always been promised but not always delivered. If cross gen games are going to be a thing of the past and devs can really concentrate on this gen then we have to accept that higher and better visuals, game mechanics etc are going to take up more space and thats not a failing of the kraken system its just the way it is. Remember when megadrive and snes games prices sky rocketed because the game required bigger capacity roms to enable the game to be played as intended without compromising the devs visions? Well this is exactly the same scenario playing out only this time round you already have the requirements already in place. I dont have time to play multiple titles at the moment so i dont need every game i own installed. I've never run short of space on my ps5 ssd and i doubt i'll ever need to use the expansion port to be honest. I cant wait to see what this gen can actually bring us once console parity is a thing of the past.
Well, I have got an SSD, and there is about 500GB of free space on it. But to be honest I might give this one a miss. The first Spider-Man game was amazing (pun intended), Miles was cool, and fun too. But I feel, this is just gonna be more of the same. I know that is not necessarily a bad thing. But as with all the movies - I have got Marvel overload, right now.
Good! I want a massive game if I’m paying full whack! 200GB with loads of variety please ☺️😂
@KilloWertz Considering elden ring is about 44GB, more than 70GB is huge for me. Oh well it seems I have to buy at least 1TB ssd, at least ps5 storage is not a proprietary like xbox sx, so it's kind of cheap now.
I’m not so concerned with a file size. I play one game at a time and just delete when I’m done.
